Summary

Description

Het burgerweeshuis is eind 16e of begin 17e eeuw neergezet op de plek waar het klooster Wateringen stond dat in 1572 afgebroken werd. Het was voor burgerkinderen, gegoede kinderen. In 1661 werd aan de Koemarkt een weeshuis voor arme kinderen gebouwd. Het burgerweeshuis diende ook als gasthuis, er werden zieken verzorgd. Het burgerweeshuis en het armenweeshuis fuseerden in 1746 en de ziekenverzorging werd elders ondergebracht. In 1789 onderging het pand een renovatie, de gevelsteen herinnert aan die gebeurtenis.

Functie

Tot het midden van de twintigste eeuw deed het gebouw dienst als weeshuis. Daarna kwam er een school in, vervolgens een jeugdopvangcentrum en later een bank. De gemeente kocht het monument in 2000. Even heeft er een restaurant en een delicatessenzaak ingezeten, maar daarna stond het jaren leeg. In 2009 wordt het pand af en toe gebruikt om streekeigen producten te verkopen.
