Das Wappen wurde dem aus Schärding am Inn stammenden k.k. Handelsgerichts-Präsidenten Carl Wagner (1819–1893) verliehen, als er mit dem Ritterkreuz des Leopold-Ordens ausgezeichnet und aufgrund der Ordensstatuten am 14. August 1879 als "Ritter Wagner v. Inngau" in den erblichen österreichischen Adelsstand erhoben wurde. Da er keine männlichen Nachkommen hatte, gestattete Kaiser Franz Joseph I. mit Allerhöchster Entschließung vom 14. April 1883 die Übertragung des Ritterstands, Prädikats und Wappens auf den Schwiegersohn des Carl Wagner v. Inngau, den k.u.k. Hof- und Gerichtsadvokaten Dr. Karl Koppler (1844–1918), der sich danach "Ritter Koppler v. Inngau" nennen durfte (zu Carl Ritter Wagner v. Inngau siehe Johann Ev. Lamprecht, Historisch-topographische und statistische Beschreibung der k.k. landesfürstl. Gränzstadt Schärding am Inn und ihrer Umgebungen, Schärding 1887, Teil 2, Heft 1, S. 245-246).
