Description
English: John Miller Baer portrays "chaplain Dr. I. M. Guilty" (personification of political corruption in North Dakota) simultaneously conducting a political funeral for Alex McKenzie and a christening for the baby Good Government League.
  • Caption: This cartoon represents the double-ended activities of Dr. I. M. Guilty, the chaplain of the armies of corruption and misrule in North Dakota, the man who devotes his time and efforts to whitewashing corruption and making robbery look like a charitable enterprise. On the right he is conducting funeral services over the remains of the Old Gang, definitely put to sleep by the voters in the primary election of June 28. Behind the coffin bulks large the massive figure of Alex McKenzie, attending his own political funeral. It is one of Dr Guilty's little jokes to assert every week or so that McKenzie has long been dead. Now he is burying his political corpse again.
On the right we behold Dr. Guilty's left hand performing a far more cheerful task. It is the baptism of the new infant that has been raising such a wail throughout the state, the "Goo Goo League." Doc Guilty has a one-sided smile that seems to show as much apprehension as joy. He feels a personal responsibility for the ill-favored infant, for some reason or other. Worry also shows through Nursie Black's attempt at a cheerful expression. She's had a hard time with this youngster since it was handed squalling into her care. It doesn't grow as she had hoped. It seems to consume all its feeble strength in lamentations. Nursie is beginning to be sick of her job, but she has a contract to raise the child. It is a lucrative contract, and also she has promised on a stack of Bibles never, O! never, to reveal the names of the child's parents. A christening ought to be an occasion of unmixed happiness, but this one is not. The parents won't own the child, the world receives it coldly and the infant itself seems born to make things unpleasant for everybody. Truly, the world is full of unhappiness for some people.
