Description
Deutsch: Der westliche Bereich, auch Rosengarten bezeichnet, des Volksgarten im 1. Wiener Gemeindebezirk Innere Stadt.
Im Zentralbereich des Rosengartens, ein französisch-barocker, architektonisch strenger Plangarten, der Volksgartenbrunnen, dahinter das Burgtheater und rechts vom Volksgartenbrunnen die unter Naturschutz stehende Morgenländische Platane.
Der Volksgarten wurde zwischen 1819 und 1907 in mehreren Etappen gestaltet. Die erste Etappe nach der Zerstörung der Burgbastei durch die Franzosen (1809) und dadurch des Baues des neuen äußeren Burgtores (1821-1823) wurde auch der Volksgarten nach einem Konzept von Ludwig von Remy angelegt und am 1. März 1823 eröffnet. Die zweite Etappe erfolgte im Zuge der Auffüllung des Stadtgrabens (1862), wodurch der Volksgarten bedeutend erweitert wurde. Die letzte Etappe erfolgte im Zuge der Aufstellung des Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Denkmals (enthüllt am 4. Juni 1907), indem durch Friedrich Ohmann der nordöstliche Teil des Volksgartens für die Aufstellung des Denkmals wesentlich verändert wurde.
