Nederlands: De Kroning van Maria vormt het middenpaneel van een veelluik, vermoedelijk uit vijf luiken en een predella. Twee zijpanelen bevinden zich in de Gemäldegalerie in Berlijn en stellen de heiligen Catharina en Laurentius voor. Door de rijkelijk in goud uitgewerkte versierselen oogt het Gentse paneel voor die tijd bijzonder modern. We zien hier Christus die zijn moeder Maria een gouden kroon op het hoofd zet, een geliefd thema in de christelijke kunst. Aan hun voeten luisteren zes musicerende engelen de apotheose van Maria’s leven op. Volgens middeleeuwse traditie zijn de engelen veel kleiner voorgesteld, wat de onderlinge hiërarchie van de figuren duidelijk moest maken. De decoratieve achtergrond en het ontbreken van enig perspectief plaatst het tafereel in een hemelse sfeer. |
