Happy New Year, Romaine!Edit

An information for Belgian usersEdit

Hi. Sorry to bother you but if you have few minutes could you use some channel (social media, mailing list) of Wikimedia Belgium to inform about current Photo challenge at Commons:Photo challenge/2017 - February - Multilingualism. I don't want the output to be unbalanced. We usually don't have a lot of Belgian uploaders and this is one of the case when it is appropriate to fix this. With other communities I have used the village pump, but only for small ones that I am sure mainly live in multilingual countries. It's not the same with nl-N and fr-N users, I hope that contacting a wikimedia of a bilingual country as I did with WMCH is less spamming.--Alexmar983 (talk) 11:35, 3 February 2017 (UTC)

Update of Campaign:wle-frEdit

Hello Romaine,
if you have some time in the following days, can you please update the french WLE Campaign for 2017 ? As with last year, the uploaded pictures should go to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2017 in France to check.
Thanks in advance. Pmau (talk) 15:52, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

@Pmau:   Done - Romaine (talk) 07:33, 18 April 2017 (UTC)
Hello Romaine, I just read your news pages concerning WLE 2018. As in previous years, the french campaign uploaded images should go to Category:Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2018 in France to check.
Thanks in advance. Pmau (talk) 11:48, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi Pmau, Implemented! I will check the campaign further today or coming days. Romaine (talk) 11:50, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi Romaine, I still noticed a reference to 2017 in the source code of the campaign but maybe it's normal... Pmau (talk) 08:03, 19 April 2018 (UTC)
No it was not, I changed it   VIGNERON (talk) 09:28, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
This is in my schedule to be changed, as I do always in the period before the contest. Romaine (talk) 11:57, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Help with the campaign wizard of WLUS IndiaEdit

Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India) (WLUS) is a public photo competition on Wikimedia Commons for use in the project websites of the Wikimedia Foundation. With the support from Wikimedia India Chapter, and the inspiration drawn from Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) and Wiki Loves Food (WLF), this is the first iteration of its kind in 2017. This year, the predominant aim of the project is to increase the count of good images of various uniformed services operating in the Indian sub-continent.

I, being the lead coordinator have configured the upload wizard for the contest, Campaign:WLUSIndia. But I have come across a small problem while I was testing it. The wiki text used is {{subst:Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India)}}. So adding this template must automatically add Category:Images from Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India) to the categories. All of this is working fine, but if you see the test images that I have uploaded using the wizard end up with the Un-categorised template tag, and subsequently the "Categories needed" category is being added. I request you to make necessary changes to the wizard so that this issue is resolved. Regards, --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk · mail) 07:04, 29 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, First of all, the template should not be substed, so I removed that. The reason why the Uncategorized template is added is because every image should be categorised on topic. The category Images from Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India) is not a topic category, so does not count. In photo contests like Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Monuments, both the organisers and participants are asked to add the best possible topic category to each image. But what we do with these contests is that we add a default topic category, a category that is as specific as possible. In your case these seems not possible as unified services as very very very wide. I would suggest instead to have a category like: Category:Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India) images that need deeper categorisation. I will add this to the upload wizard. You and your team must make sure that you try to keep this category empty by adding topic categories to the images, like Category:Police of India and Category:Army of India. Romaine (talk) 14:13, 30 April 2017 (UTC)
@Romaine: That is very kind of you, many thanks. I'll add a clause to encourage participants to add the relevant category. Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk · mail) 15:36, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

little error in WLE UploadWizard/Campaign for GreeceEdit

Hello Romaine, could you have a look at [1] please? It seems {{subst:Wiki Loves Greece is running|gr| … }} is wrongly added around the WLE template itself. i hope you can fix it. Holger1959 (talk) 02:55, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi Holger1959, Fixed! Thank you very much for checking and reporting! This is why I only should edit campaign pages for WLE as the error was caused by someone else creating the upload campaign for Greece. Romaine (talk) 03:36, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

little error in WLE UploadWizard for GermanyEdit

Hi Romaine, the Upload Wizard has a link to our contest rules. It still links to last year's rules, for 2017 they are on Commons. Thanks a lot for your great support for all WLE campaigns. Best regards, --Blech (talk) 07:15, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi Blech, Updated! I really must state that the translate system used in the templates is a horrible one. I costs more time to actually find the place to update a link (just clicking edit is not possible), than finding the template. The system is maybe nice for easy getting translations, for updating etc it is terrible. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 08:45, 1 May 2017 (UTC)
Next year's headline: Wikimedia photo contest failed - Regulars cannot find the button any more ;-) --Blech (talk) 11:10, 1 May 2017 (UTC)

Upload assistant has problem with coordinatesEdit

Hello Romaine,

a WLE-photographer used coordinates with the upload assistant and says that they have been switched by the assistant. It has been corrected at file level, see [2]. The problem has been mentioned here and there. Can you fix that (if it is really an error)? Regards, --Blech (talk) 19:58, 3 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi Blech, This is just weird. This is something that originates in the MediaWiki software which I can't fix. I created a task for it at Phabricator: phab:T164501. Romaine (talk) 15:06, 4 May 2017 (UTC)

WLE Indonesia helpEdit

Hello Romaine, could you please have a look at Campaign:wcai-id, Template:Wiki Cinta Alam Indonesia 2017 and possibly other pages for Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2017 in Indonesia? i think it makes sense to use the streamlined naming scheme with "Wiki Loves Earth" also for Indonesia, and not extra templates or special category names like "Wiki Cinta Alam". The Indonesian contest will start in June, so there is enough time to change all relevant parts and links. Holger1959 (talk) 16:30, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi Holger1959, Even within an hour I can change this, but yes I am concerned with this. The way how it has been set up is terrible. Te template is not translatable and is outside the system of WLE. The campaign is not set up well. I have sent an internal mail to the team to decide on this. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 04:20, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
No idea if you notified Rachmat04, but you should, since he's the one that requested the previous format.--Strainu (talk) 18:09, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

WLE Germany end timeEdit

Hello Romaine, i think you know where the UTC end time for WLE Germany is fixed. The contest ended a few minutes ago, but images uploaded after midnight on 2017-06-01 with Campaign/UploadWizard (eg. [3]) are still marked with templates/categories. Could you have a look please? Holger1959 (talk) 22:18, 31 May 2017 (UTC) – it's UTC+2 (summer time) here in Germany. Holger1959 (talk) 22:20, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

Hi Holger1959, Thank you for informing me about this. I am aware of the time in Germany. The system tested and multiple times checked, I get a different result, so I do not know how this upload happened with the contest template included. Romaine (talk) 22:28, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
glad that you are awake. it's a pity you don't know the reason too. the WLE UploadWizard form shows the "contest ended" template already to me. so I will check for other affected uploads, and fix them manually where needed. maybe this issue automatically ends at 2 o'clock then ;) Holger1959 (talk) 22:36, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
I just did a test upload through the same campaign and that file did not get the contest template. Another upload from someone else shortly after however still got the contest template.... Mystery... But yes please, remove the contest template and Images from Wiki Loves Earth 2017, DE-XX category. Romaine (talk) 22:39, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
PS: As coordinator of the upload wizards and banners of Wiki Loves Earth it is my task to stay awake until all contests have started and ended.
As this happening is not seen in this precise form, I might think that something has changed in the software. Also I saw people adding the template manually. With Wiki Loves Monuments we have a bot/tool that removes the contest template, not sure if we have it with this contest too. Romaine (talk) 22:52, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
thanks for your help with removal. i asked one of the "late" uploaders and he said [4] he added the WLE parts manually on upload (likely copy paste with information template). the other user added the template only after upload [5], so hopefully the mystery is solved. Holger1959 (talk) 00:28, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Commons:Wiki Loves Public Space 2017 in BelgiumEdit

Romaine (talk) 13:12, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
Okay, that answers my question.   Lotje (talk) 11:28, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Commons:Wiki Loves Public Space 2017 in BelgiumEdit

Romaine (talk) 14:09, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

File:Tijdsgeest museumbeeld.jpgEdit

Hallo Romaine.

Romaine (talk) 17:07, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
Weer iets bijgeleerd.   Lotje (talk) 17:09, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

Help with Campaign:WLUSIndiaEdit

Hi Roamine,

Earlier you've helped me in fixing the error for the Upload wizard of Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India). Now we need to allow third party images for a reason, so need to configure the wizard for the same. I was unable to figure it out. Please help me in this. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk · mail) 13:44, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, I am not sure what you exactly want you want, but it seems you want your uploads to choose between own uploads or other sourced. I just implemented that. Is that what you wanted? Greetings - Romaine (talk) 07:34, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
@Romaine: That is what I exactly wanted. Thanks for the help. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk · mail) 01:23, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Help requestEdit

Hi. I wonder if you can create a category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Romania (hors concours). Unfortunately, it is the second year in a row when, due to the lack of interest and of vision, the contest is not organized in Romania. My interest is not in the prizes, but that these monuments should be seen worldwide. This was the purpose of my work: more than 60000 photographs of monuments in 10 years. I take photographs only of monuments which are in isolated olaces and do not have photos at wikipedia, and many of them do not have photos on the internet at all. I suffer from an invalidating autoimmune disease and moreover, the aggressive treatment for this disease has triggered an acute glaucoma, so that, beginning with the spring of 2016, I am 90% blind. This year will be probably the swan song for me, I do not have time to wait for another edition.--Țetcu Mircea Rareș (talk) 13:55, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Țetcu Mircea Rareș, Thank you for your interest in Wiki Loves Monuments, but even more thanks for all the work in creating the photos and uploading them! All the photos uploaded to Wiki Loves Monuments should (in the end) also be categorised by subject/location. For that reason all uploads that are uploaded via the Romanian WLM upload wizard are added automatically to the category Category:Historical monuments in Romania. A category like category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in Romania is normally only created when there is a local contest and is intended for the people who are interested to see which images participate in the contest. If there is no contest organised in Romania, you can still use the WLM upload wizard for Romania, and your images also are added to the system category for WLM in Romania. You also can use this upload wizard outside the normal contest period (in other months than September). I hope this helps you, but I will raise awareness for your situation internally and we will see how we can help you. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 10:38, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Romaine (Erminig says Hi! too),

Thank you for updating Campaign:wlm-fr, but I have some questions about some points that could be improved (every year in end August, I get confused when I re-read this documentation about Campaigns mw:Extension:UploadWizard/Campaigns, is there a better page) :

  • I don't see the Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in France to check category in the code (which is needed to be sure that a human checked every photo imported during WLM-fr), is it normal ? otherwise, could you add it (in the autoAdd section, if I understand correctly)
  • right now, the campaign adds the xxx − late category, but it should be xxx - early until 1st September, is there a way for the campaign to read the time and put the correspondent category?

Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 14:25, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi VIGNERON, You do not see the check category in the code because it must be added to the campaign code on 1 September. I have this on my list to do, then the late/early category is replaced by the check category, and changed back on 1 October. It then will replace the early/late category. Earlier this month I changed the 2016 late category to 2017. I think that was a mistake of mine, because 2016's late = 2017 early, two categories for the same is not needed I think. I changed the check category now to 2017 early. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 14:40, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your quick but precise answer !
Should I understand that you have to do it by hand and that there is not way to use a template or some code ? (I was thinking of something like {{#ifexpr: {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} < 20170901000000 | xxx - early | {{#ifexpr: {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} > 20170931235959 | xxx - late | error }} }} , wouldn't it be possible?)
Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 14:52, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
In the field the category is now, I am not sure if I want to add it there as that is inserted in the campaign during uploading. People can edit this field and change the category to the right Commons category. Putting it there is tricky, putting it elsewhere is that the key functionality for people who know what to do is lost. The campaign is heavily cached, so I always have to go to the campaign, so the current situation is not an issue. The proposal you made would, if implemented, still require edits to update it. As said, for me it is fine how the campaign works now, I or someone else changes it at beginning and ending. Romaine (talk) 15:10, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
Ok, let it stay that way. I probably won't be online Thursday night to make the manual change. And again, thank you for all your work and dedication. Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 22:23, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Manual uploads to WLMEdit

We've been asked in previous years whether it's compulsory to use the official upload wizard to upload images into the WLM contest. Experienced Commons editors who have many files to upload sometimes find it easier to use one of the bulk upload tools and to add the necessary categories in that way. We've always said that that is OK (as there is nothing in the rules to prohibit it), but I see that you've added text to the main categories saying that they should not be added manually. This year we've just said in our instructions "Please contact us if you wish to do a bulk upload of images with known listing numbers.". If anyone asks, I'd then plan to liaise with you. Could you confirm that's OK? MichaelMaggs (talk) 17:02, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi MichaelMaggs, Experienced Commons editors can of course upload images through other tools. They only have to make sure the template {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2017|gb-eng}} is added to the file pages. (And instead of gb-eng, also gb-nir, gb-sct and gb-wls are possible.)
The WLM UK category should have never been added manually (has always been added with the WLM template, WLM template always has been a requirement), the WLM England/Northern Ireland/Scotland/Wales category should indeed have been added manually in previous years. However, you changed the system by saying people should use gb-eng instead of gb. That is what I implemented also elsewhere in the system. Now the manual category is no longer needed and obsolute if people add the gb-eng in the WLM template. So please say if they have bulk upload questions that they add the contest template with gb-eng (etc).
On the linked site I see no problems. On the FAQ page I see nothing about mass uploading for experienced users, did I miss it or was my expectation wrong? Romaine (talk) 19:36, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
Not the FAQ but the How to Enter page now has advice on bulk uploads. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 11:29, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
@MichaelMaggs: Excellent! Romaine (talk) 12:01, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Romaine, I have added custom banner for Pakistan here. The URL of landing page is at - I also expect Pakistani flag in the central notice banner. Thank you --Saqib (talk) 14:05, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Saqib, The Pakistani flag is possible, but three lines of text is not. Romaine (talk) 15:25, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
I hope two lines possible? I have made changes. --Saqib (talk) 15:27, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes, that is possible. I just implemented it (and used the design of last year with the flag) so it will be live at midnight on 1 September. Romaine (talk) 15:33, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Campaign wlm-fr-eus and wlm-es-eusEdit

For information, Theklan gave me the code for Campaign:wlm-es-eus and Campaign:wlm-fr-eus, so I created these campaigns. It seems good (at least it should work) and I hope I didn't do something too wrong, feel free to double check.

Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 15:56, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi VIGNERON, No, there are some errors in it. I will fix it. Romaine (talk) 15:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Thanks VIGNERON and Romaine! -Theklan (talk) 16:02, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
There's something more. It needs two templates, not one:

"autoAdd": { "wikitext": "{{subst:WLM-is-running|fr|{{Wiki Loves Monuments 2017|fr-eus}}}}{{subst:WLM-is-running|fr|{{Wiki Loves Monuments 2017|fr}}}}"

"autoAdd": { "wikitext": "{{subst:WLM-is-running|es|{{Wiki Loves Monuments 2017|es-eus}}}}{{subst:WLM-is-running|es|{{Wiki Loves Monuments 2017|es}}}}"

Thanks! -Theklan (talk) 16:04, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi Theklan, Why does it need this template two times?
With adding fr-eus or es-eus, two categories are added already, adding the template twice does not do anything extra. Romaine (talk) 16:08, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
True that! Sorry, just a little bit on-a-sprint with this topic. It seems that everything is now ready then! We will start with the presentation tomorrow morning, I think! -Theklan (talk) 16:10, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi Theklan, My plan of the day was to get your contest ready, you were a little bit ahead of me. So far I can see right now, everything works. If however something is missing or not working, please let me know here on my talk page so I can have a look at it. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 16:14, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes, sorry Romaine, but I had to send some announcements to our User Group and I was waiting for this to be done (can't do it, as I'm not an admin here). I think everything is OK as long as we can track the uploads... and it seems working now. Thanks for all, great job! -Theklan (talk) 16:39, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi (again) Romaine,
Oh I see now ! In the {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2017}}, when the parameter is es-eus or fr-eus, there is already the two categories xxx in France and xxx in the Basque Country. No need to put the template twice then. Thank you a lot for your work!
Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 17:05, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi Romaine. The banner is appearing in English in our front page, but I translated the string: "Wiki Loves Monuments: Photograph a monument, help Wikipedia and win!". Thanks! -Theklan (talk) 10:25, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi Theklan, Because of the complex language situation, I had to make a separate banner for Spain. I tried to add in there all the local languages of Spain, but somehow I missed Basque. I now added it and it should now show in Basque too. There can be a cache effect, so sometimes it may show in English again. Please be aware that the banner is shown in that language you have set in your preferences on a certain wiki. If you have set your language to English on Meta and Basque on Wikipedia, you will see it then in English on Meta and in Basque on that Wikipedia wiki. Sorry for the mistake. Romaine (talk) 13:31, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Landing page for ItalyEdit

Hi Romaine. Tell me what to do, because I thought it was all right on the Italian page (quite the same as the previous year). Thanks --Cristian Cenci (WMIT) 17:31, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Landing page for Malaysia=Edit

Update of Campaign:wlm-an (Dutch Caribbean)Edit

Hi Romaine,

I tested the upload campaign for wlm-an (Dutch Caribbean) and have a few issues

  1. the monument ID does not seem to be transferred with &id=xxxx in a link link like Please
  2. would it be possible to fill in a parameter for the island, like &island=Curaçao
  3. A small issue: when no ID is given an image is uploaded with an incomplete information-template. Two }} are missing. See It is OK though when an ID is filled.

HenkvD (talk) 18:33, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi HenkvD,
  1. It is the second field, so &id2=019004 must be used.
  2. To fill in the parameter for island use &id=Aruba or &id=Sint%20Eustatius
  3. I need to test that and see how that can be fixed, not sure why this happens. Romaine (talk) 21:08, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. 1 & 2 work now. Let's leave issue 3 for the monent. HenkvD (talk) 21:59, 31 August 2017 (UTC)

Wiki Loves AfricaEdit

Hello dear Romaine. This is season return for WLAf ! Can you help us asap you have a free spot ?

This year novelty... dunno if you will scream or not, but I could not figure out myself why we would have on one hand a main page and on the other hand a landing page. So I merged the two. Dunno if there is a tech issue behind this (if so, please tell me), but for me, it made sense to simplify...

See anyway... Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2017 is at the moment the landing page.

what do you think ?

Anthere (talk) 20:42, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

I sent you mailEdit

Hi, I sent you a Mail :). --Regiomontanus (talk) 16:17, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello Romaine

I know the moment is really not ideal at all for you, but wanted to remind you that WLA is launching in two days and we need the site notice stuff. Grab me anytime ! All my best Anthere (talk) 11:04, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Hello Romaine
Just a reminder that WLA is supposed to launch in 24h and at the moment, we still have no site notice at all. Will you have some free time to set the system up tomorrow ? Whether you can, or can not, please drop me a message by email (I will see the message more quickly than on the wiki). Fdevouard (a) Thanks ! Anthere (talk)

Hi, I see you're a bureaucrat on beta. I was wondering if you can give me access to GLAMToolset. I have a ton of archived stuff to upload and prefer to upload and try there before requesting the real flag. Thanks. Artix Kreiger (talk) 18:13, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

WMBE and WSCEdit

Hi. I just wrote an email to WMCH, I inform you as well. Wiki Sciece Competition has started, yesterday a banner appeared on enwiki in USA making it officially "global", as far as I know. Since I don't want to create to much gap between countries I am preparing banners for all countries I know the language, but I am not sure how to do with bilingual countries.

At the same time I am informing all national institutions, associations and federations of science and technology, especially those located in countries without national juries. Now since we have one juror from Belgium, I'd like to inform Belgians as well. So he is also proud, he is a very proud Belgian. i have already started to contact some institutions here and there in Belgium.

Do you think you can use the social media of WMBE too? Here you can find a list of images from 2015 as an example. Thanks in advance and let me know.--Alexmar983 (talk) 04:40, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

information template and metadataEdit

hi, thanks, for your work uploading artwork files. i've been converting information template to artwork template as a part of File metadata cleanup drive. i.e. [7] i would encourage you to use commons:pattypan for your mass uploads, which allows artwork template and the right data fields for artworks. cheers. Hi Anthere, This issue is something I can't do anything about but seems something to review by the tech department. Filing an bug at Phabricator is then the right way. If this issue was only temporary, you may perhaps extend the deadline a few days? Romaine (talk) 15:05, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello Romaine. No biggie, but I noticed a "bug". In the WLA 2015 contest, one country is missing. This is "Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2015 in the Republic of the Congo‎". Sjabloon error, hulpEdit

Romaine (talk) 16:51, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

damaged filesEdit

Hi Romaine!

Is there a feature to find a damaged files, for example like File:Stroke-dasharray_chromium_bug_full.svg. I would like to try to repair such files.

 — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 07:43, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi JoKalliauer, I am wondering how you ended up with asking me? It is funny that I uploaded this image File:Fileicon-svg.png in 2011 when I encountered issues. But to answer your question, no, I have no way to find damaged files. I can't remember; we had a tool or something years ago. Sorry, I do not know how to find them. Perhaps someone more technical can answer your question. It may be worth also to check the categories of Category:Pictures showing a librsvg bug. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 06:35, 28 March 2018 (UTC)
I asked you because you uploaded thumb. I know Category:Pictures showing a librsvg bug, I repaired some of them. I asked @Perhelion: (User_talk:Perhelion&oldid=279076999#Ungültige_SVG-Dateien in German) but he didn't know it either. I don't know who to ask.  — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 16:04, 29 March 2018 (UTC)
Perhaps you can file a task for this on Phabricator. That would be my choice for trying. Romaine (talk) 05:12, 30 March 2018 (UTC)

CentralNotice for Wiki Loves EarthEdit

Hi Romaine! In previous years you were actively involved in setting up CentralNotice for Wiki Loves Earth in different countries. I would like to check whether you will continue being involved in this in 2018 or whether your plans have changed? As we are roughly three weeks before the first contests start on 1 May, we will start working on CentralNotice requests, thus what is the best format for you if you will be involved in it? Thanks — NickK (talk) 22:40, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi NickK, Yes, I will be involved this year as well.
Each of the participating countries gets a CentralNotice banner. What I need to know is what texts they would like to have in the banner (available in all the common languages in that country + English). Like in 2017 (Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2017/CentralNotice) I will create the 2018 page for this likely later today at Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2018/CentralNotice. For new countries I also need to set up the upload wizard.
I will be at WMCON in Berlin for those who want help or have questions. Romaine (talk) 06:44, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

Unidentified subjectsEdit

Ymnes (talk) 16:35, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Zojuist gedaan en inderdaad: License Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed) na de knop show more te hebben ingedrukt. Mooi!

Request for help to set up Wiki Loves Culture campaignEdit

Hello Romaine, I hope you're doing well!

I would like to ask for help from you to set up a Commons campaign. This year Wikimedia Indonesia will host Wiki Loves Culture, starting this September. I don't know if there are some instances for that campaign page but in case none has done this yet, I have prepared some codes here: User:Rachmat04/Campaign:wlc-id, for you.

Please let me know if this won't work, and thank you for your big help! ··· 🌸 Rachmat04 · 13:47, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

I believe Meta Grants is a better place than Commons. Klaas `Z4␟` V:  13:11, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

@Rachmat04:   Done - I have created the campaign. I think the template used should autotranslate so also people that do not speak Indonesian can read the template: Template:Wiki Cinta Budaya 2018. ->   Done. Also the campaign adds manually a category, this should be done by the template. ->   changed. Also this category should have as name Category:Images from Wiki Cinta Budaya 2018, in line with every contest category on Wikimedia Commons. ->   Created. In this category all images are added. I think you are ready to use the campaign. You can test it to see how it goes. If you have any questions, please try to ask them as early as possible, the last week of August is for me always a bit too busy. Romaine (talk) 23:06, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, Romaine! But, could you please change the code to rescale the tutorial image to 600px? The current is too big and is displayed beyond the size of laptop monitor, and might be uncomfortable for some users. ··· 🌸 Rachmat04 · 01:59, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
  Fixed - Romaine (talk) 02:22, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
On the second thought, the organizers want the participants to upload their images under CC BY-SA 4.0 only. Could you please remove "cc-by-4.0" from the list? Thank you, ··· 🌸 Rachmat04 · 05:40, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Beste Romaine,

Romaine (talk) 01:02, 9 August 2018 (UTC)

Creating a campaignEdit

Hello Romaine! A volunteer is setting up a competition for images of dentists and dentistry. Would it be possible to set up a campaign to put images into Category:Wikipedia Collaboration of Dental Schools competition? The competition runs between 00:00, 20 September and 23:59 21 October. Richard Nevell (talk) 15:27, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Richard Nevell, Yes, that is possible. I do need more information to be able to do it. Like for example if there a template need to be included that the image took part in a competition (see for example WLM and other contests), what to do with the license(s), and some more information. Also I like to point out that photo competitions are usually using categories with the name starting with Category:Images from ... to distinguish them from topic categories (as all images need to be included in at least one topic category besides a contest category, as people search by topic for images). In the coming week Wiki Loves Monuments starts, so my main focus until about 2 September will be Wiki Loves Monuments, after that we can go through the steps to create a campaign and more for your local contest. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 01:55, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

Upload wizard problem (file description missing)Edit

Hi Romaine,

Unfortunately, there is a problem with the upload wizard. Many (but not all) of the campaigns display an empty page in the 'Describe' part of the Upload Wizard (4th step of the upload). This seems to be a bug. Here are a few examples:

How should we deal with this problem? --Alexander (talk) 09:28, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

Thank you for reporting, I will look into the issue and search for what it is caused by. Romaine (talk) 07:19, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
Hi Alexander, This is a really major big bug for WLM. I think I found the cause and reported it at Phrabricator: phab:T202967. Please wait for the bug to be solved before taking action, I will follow it up and if necessarily take action. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 07:53, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks! Well, in the worst case we can live without the categories (having the template with the monument ID is enough for further categorization), but let's hope for the best. --Alexander (talk) 08:37, 28 August 2018 (UTC)
The problem seems solved. Luckily!! Romaine (talk) 10:14, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Upload campaign for Wikivoyage bannersEdit

One more request from my side. You have likely read our today's conversation with Lodewijk on a separate upload campaign for Wikivoyage banners. Could you please create it for us? I would propose the name 'wlm-banners'.

The settings should be fairly simple. All we need is the separate field for the 'source image' (the image used to crop the banner from) and the automatically added category 'Category:Banners from Wiki Loves Monuments 2018'. The WLM template is not needed, we shall add it later (where needed) after manual review of the submissions.

Finally, this campaign should be open till October 31, because we invite the participants to crop the banner images also after the end of the regular WLM.

Thank you in advance! --Alexander (talk) 23:21, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Alexander, I created the special upload wizard for Wikivoyage banners. Uploading is possible through this link.
I have set the times for Wikivoyage banners contest from 1 September 00:00 UTC to 31 October 23:50 UTC.
Above the upload wizard this banner will be shown during the contest: Template:Upload campaign header wlm-banners - you can modify it and add translations as subpages if you wish.
If people enter the source image from which it has been extracted, the Template:Extracted from will be added to the file page. Due technical restrictions, the place of this template is not optimal and needs relocation on the file page with reviewing the banners.
The text shown above the field to enter the source image is defined here. Also this field can be translated, please let me know on my talk page which translations I can add.
All images uploaded will be added to Category:Banners from Wiki Loves Monuments 2018. Romaine (talk) 11:04, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
Romaine, thanks a lot! I updated the links.
Regarding the translation of MediaWiki:Mwe-upwiz-campaigns-wlm-banners, I would propose the following
English: Source image (Commons file that your banner was cropped from)
Unfortunately, I can't help with other languages. --Alexander (talk) 08:46, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
Implemented - you can ask others to provide translations. Romaine (talk) 08:49, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
OK, I'm doing that.
Implemented - more are welcome, especially in the languages in what a Wikivoyage exist. I translated it to Dutch. Romaine (talk) 11:40, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Hello Romaine! I ping also @VIGNERON: and @Aitzolete:. This year Aitzolete has been making some changes for the WLM2018 contest in the Basque Country, as I was on holidays. I have discovered today that if I try to upload from our landing page, we get an error saying that the contest hasn't started yet. I don't know where we have to change this, or if something is missing for the contest to run. Could you help us? Thanks! -Theklan (talk) 08:02, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi Theklan, That issue has been fixed now, it was caused by me forgetting to write it down on my list of to-do's from yesterday + no landing page mentioned in the lists. Romaine (talk) 16:11, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Just to let you know..Edit

Hey Romaine, I'm sorry I had to revert you here. That link was intentional and we'd like it to stay. We definitely don't want to link a category page in there. And thank you for the CN banner, appreciate that. ~ Nahid Talk 06:13, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi |, I am sorry, but linking to the campaign page is absolutely not done. That is not the page where (only) images from WLM are shown of this year. The images shown there are based on a maintenance category for me as organiser. If you keep restoring the link, I have no other option than removing every image out of there. Romaine (talk) 13:42, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
Romaine, While I appreciate your work in wlm in general, I don not think this is a right attitude from an international organizer. As a local organizer please let us do our job and how we design our page is our concern. I do not think threatening to remove all image from there is a right way to deal in here. ~ Nahid Talk 13:46, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
It is also not the right attitude of a local organiser.
  • No serious explanation given why you want to link.
  • No question about why I fixed the link.
  • No link to the page where the actual uploaded photos of this contest are.
You aren't doing your job for this part, that is why I took action. I never threaten, I only make promises. Romaine (talk) 13:52, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
Now, It feels like we are discussing. First of all, You replaced the link and you didn't bother to ask me first. I reverted you and notified you as a courtesy. But then, without asking any questions you reverted that again and posted the threat above (again, you explained you point of view and then you directly went on the threatening part (removing images)). I'm providing this year's cat link in our landing page (like you said it's not present in there and if you feel there should be one then I'll add it) but we'd like the link to stay where you changed it. We liked it there because it has nice gallery view at the same time has a upload button on it if the visitor's want to upload directly from there. Last time I check, there is not any rule on international contest to link the cat page on the local landing page. So it's not mandatory to add the cat page. Also, I'm not doing my job well? that's pretty much insulting. You threatened me above and now you are insulting me? While I really appreciate your work in wlm, In my opinion you should really work on your attitude/language. ~ Nahid Talk 14:10, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
Okay, I've added 2018 cat in the main page and updated the menu link name as "uploaded images (all time)", happy? ~ Nahid Talk 14:34, 2 September 2018 (UTC)
(after edit conflict) @NahidSultan: We have received complaints/remarks of people that find it weird and confusing when linked to the gallery, as well as providing the wrong number of uploads. That is why I checked every landing page of every local competition on this issue and fixed it everywhere. Secondly, we consider linking to the overview page of where this year's participating images are as a default thing that everyone automatically does. If everyone is doing this, there is no reason to create extra bureaucracy by adding another rule. But yes, it is mandatory. Further, you indicate on the landing page "Uploaded images". This suggests that people can see there the images that have been uploaded as part of Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in Bangladesh, instead visitors go to a page where 97% of the photos are not of the current Wiki Loves Monuments Bangladesh contest. There are now 353 photos uploaded as part of the contest for Bangladesh, while there are 11 122 photos in the gallery, so less than 3% is of this year's photo contest. That is misleading for the participants. Also if someone uploads a photo, this person has a chance of 1 out of 353 to be chosen as winning photo, and not 1 out of 11 122 photos as the winning one as the gallery page suggests.
The first thing you did is reverting my edit, then you wrote something on my talk page. In the message you posted you provided zero explanation why. This is both not helpful if you intent to have a discussion.
If you make a spelling error, and I see it, I will fix it. Is that a threat? I don't think so. If A happens, B is the effect. And B is done as A is a problem. That is clarity. In the past days I have seen all the landing pages and some where not ready at a certain time, and then I indicated that it needs to be fixed otherwise there will be no banner.
You indicated you find it insulting that I said you are not doing your job well for this part. This was a reaction to "let us do our job", which is insulting to me as it suggests that I am not doing my job.
One other thing we are concerned about is the flow of the participants on landing pages and further. If the flow is not set up well, this usually leads to a lot of photos of monuments without identifiers added to the file pages. That is concerning as those unique identifiers make it possible to clearly determine which monument is on the photo, is part of the Monuments database and multiple tools work based on those identifiers. If those identifiers are missing, images are less usable, and those identifiers need to be added by hand. For that purpose it is also why it is avoided to link to the gallery page as the blue upload button there promotes too much uploading without monument identifiers, while those are highly needed. For Bangladesh you have nice tables with upload buttons that fill in the right information right away, while you still want to have a blue button that promotes uploading without this minimal required information. That is a leakage, and that is our job as international organisers to monitor that. Romaine (talk) 15:20, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Finlands Wiki Loves Monuments bannerEdit

Hi, currently is down (and whole host is down, not just us) and WLM banner is pointing to it. I changed the templates (edits) but it havent yet effected to the banners. I think banner should be updated or temporarily disabled but i don't know how to it. --Zache (talk) 13:39, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

Solved. It site works now. --Zache (talk) 13:50, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
@Zache: Thanks! Can we set the links back now? Romaine (talk) 18:12, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I reverted my edits to the template. --Zache (talk) 23:06, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

India WLM bannerEdit

Hi, I am not getting the WLM sitenotice banner for India in Commons for last few days. Is it only me or something has been changed? Can you please check. Thanks -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 07:32, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi Bodhisattwa, I only have access to the CentralNotice banner, different (but more quirky) system. Nothing weird on the tech side to see, nothing has changed. Romaine (talk) 18:38, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Photo identificationEdit

Hello, I think, that this image File:Ecomare - muiltje (pcd04057-muiltje-sd).jpg is not Crepidula fornicata. The real Crepidula fornicata looks like this: The image is from Ecomare project. I am not sure, but the image identification looked suspicious to me. On the other hand, Crepidula fornicata is very variable. Could you verify the source information of the identification, please? Thank you. Have a nice day, --Snek01 (talk) 21:29, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Hi Snek01, Ecomare has indicated that this photo is from a Muiltje, a common species in the area. According to the Dutch Wikipedia article the scientific name is Crepidula fornicata. Looking myself at both photos, I see many similarities. Romaine (talk) 01:18, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
OK, thanks. I will trust the Ecomare's identification for now. --Snek01 (talk) 15:02, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Please keep the counter going for WLM in IsraelEdit

Hi, I'm Liron, one of the two WLM organizers in Israel this year. After issuing a special request, we were granted 9 more days for the WLM campaign in our country. This means we started getting pictures on September 9 and will suspend the uploading option at the end of October 9. In the meanwhile, in 02:00 Israeli Time (30 minutes ago), the counter in our local site stopped working. Can you do something for keeping it going? Our technical manager, user:Ynhockey, is abroad, not reachable, and as far as I remember he has mentioned the counter function is an international-related thing. If it's not, who should I contact, as far as you understand? Thanks in advance, Liron Ldorfman (talk) 23:31, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

... The same thing should be done regarding the upload counter that shows the number uploaded from Israel in the list of countries page... Ldorfman (talk) 23:33, 30 September 2018 (UTC)
@Ldorfman: Your colleague organisers have indicated that the contest in Israel will run until 2018-10-08 20:59 UTC, with the time difference of 3 hours that is midnight at the end of 8 October, meaning that 8 October is the last day of uploading. (If this is 24 hours too early, please talk internally about it, because this is what your team has indicated.) This is how it has been set up in the infrastructure too. At this moment it is October in Israel, and if I test it, the upload infrastructure is still working as it should. There is a fallback mechanism in place that tells me if images have been uploaded through the dedicated upload wizard for Israeli monuments, but not in the present contest category, and such did not happen, meaning that after the upload of File:Ein gedi17.jpg no other file has been uploaded yet. Looking at the edits of the last couple of users uploading images, they stopped uploading at all since there last upload. If I look at the moment, there are 1101 images uploaded in the Israel contest. If I look on your website, I also see the number of 1101. Based on the matching numbers and all checks I just did, I have no indication that it is not working. The main reason why the number of images is not growing is because people did not upload more images. One thing I do not get, can you link to the page where I can find th "upload counter that shows the number uploaded from Israel in the list of countries page"? Romaine (talk) 01:40, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks Romaine. The site's counter now shows 1106, so everything is fine. I will discuss the final date issue with our team and whenn I have it, I will also give you a link to the page I mentioned. Till them, goodbye and thanks for the help again. Ldorfman (talk) 08:30, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi again, after a discussion in our team, we would like the contest in Israel to end at the last minute of 2018-10-09, completing a full month, as we started at midnight (local time) between Sep 8 to 9. This means there are almost two days left now. We assume there was some misunderstanding at the time this issue was addressed to the organizers. Please make the needed adjustment wherever needed. On beahalf of my partner, Oved and me, thanks a lot. Ldorfman (talk) 22:07, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

... Can you please turn on the uploading option for today? October 9 is the last day according to all our publications. Thanks. Ldorfman (talk) 08:59, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
Hi Ldorfman, Sorry for the delay. This morning I updated it on request of Ynhockey. Your message had gone lost in the 60+ new messages I received over the weekend on the wikis. The uploads in the time between midnight and the fix, I updated with the WLM template. Romaine (talk) 16:45, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
All this trouble turned worthwhile at the end, as we received quite many pictures during the day. Thank you for the help and thanks also to our friend User:Ynhockey for contacting you. Oved and Liron Ldorfman (talk) 21:58, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Invitation to Organize Wiki Loves Love 2019Edit

Wiki Loves Love (WLL) is an International photography competition of Wikimedia Commons to subject love testimonials happening in the month of February 2019.

The primary goal of the competition is to document love testimonials through human cultural diversity such as monuments, ceremonies, snapshot of tender gesture, and miscellaneous objects used as symbol of love; to illustrate articles in the worldwide free encyclopedia Wikipedia, and other Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) projects. February is around the corner and Wiki Loves Love team invites you to organize and promote WLL19 in your country and join hands with us to celebrate love and document it on Wikimedia Commons. The theme of 2019 is Festivals, ceremonies and celebrations of love.

To organize Wiki Loves Love in your region, sign up at WLL Organizers page. You can also simply support and spread love by helping us translate the commons page in your local language which is open for translation.

The contest starts runs from 1-28 February 2019. Independent from if there is a local contest organised in your country, you can help by making the photo contest Wiki Loves Love more accessible and available to more people in the world by translating the upload wizard, templates and pages to your local language. See for an overview of templates/pages to be translated at our Translations page.

Imagine...The sum of all love!

WLL organizersEdit

I represent NGO «Creative Elite of Ukraine» (CEU) and the CEU want to take part in WLL 2019 organization (press-conference for media, national juri, national prize, etc).

The CEU is not an affiliated organization to WMF. Is it possible for us to take part in WLL 2019 organization? --Perohanych (talk) 18:43, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello @Perohanych:, thank you for proposing your help. This is warmly welcome! It would be perfect if you could contact us at WikiLovesLove, possibly with WMUA in copy, so we could coordinate efforts better. If you could associate the process with two proefficient Wikimedians, it would be even better.
I don't know Creative Elite of Ukraine, so a bit of background would be nice. What does it promote generally? Does its goals overlaps those of WLL in some manner?
Whatever you plane to do is an appreciated help, as long as your communications stay compatible with WLL aims and Wikimedian foundation values, something less likely to happen with a recognized affiliate.
Cheers, Psychoslave (talk) 17:52, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
Hello @Psychoslave:, thank you for your quick answer.
It was me, who 10 years ago came with an idea and organized WMUA. I was CEO of WMUA till 2014 and now I am an ordinary member of WMUA. In 2018 I organized CEU NGO, which in its aim and objectives has much commom with WMUA, including:
  • Supporting the creation and development of wiki-based projects which permit the editing of content by all authorized users.
  • Supporting publication and granting access through the Internet to content created within the framework of specific projects on the basis of free licenses as of the type GNU Free Documentation License issued by the Free Software Foundation.
  • Popularizing Ukrainian language Internet projects of Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. such as Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikinews, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies, Wikimedia Commons and others.
WLL aims and Wikimedian foundation values do not stipulate any monopoly on promoting the formation and development of equal opportunity for all in creating, accessing, utilizing and sharing information and knowledge, and to thus enable individuals and communities in reaching their full potential. --Perohanych (talk) 18:49, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
Hello @Perohanych:! Thank you for reaching out to Romaine! We appreciate it and would love to collaborate with your organisation for Wiki Loves Love! Feel free to share your plans on WikiLovesLove or my usertalk page regarding the details of the contest. Since you want to organise it from Ukraine, please go through this link for the required translations and landing page. Feel free to reach out to Romaine for template assistance. Lots of Wiki Love! Afbeeldingen NieuwjaarsbijeenkomstEdit

Hoi, Romaine.

Bedankt. ErikvanB (talk) 22:41, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
PS: Ik word hiervoor net bedankt door Richardkiwi. Haha. ErikvanB (talk) 22:43, 2 February 2019 (UTC)

hello there! I have created a campaign page for this year: Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2019/Upload campaigns. i saw that you have updated year in the templates using AWB. are you going to do it like that this year as well? or should we update it manually?

Hi antanana, I will do it with a bot. Due some circumstances I am a bit slow, but will doing it soon. Romaine (talk) 12:58, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Deletion requestEdit
