Commons:Public Domain Day/2022 edit

Hi, Could you please add these files? The page is too big, and takes a long time to load. Thanks, Yann (talk) 12:27, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Yann, Every day I go multiple times through the deletion log to see which files have been undeleted because of PDD. So normally all files that are undeleted because of this automatically end up on the PDD project page the same day. It is not needed to let me know which files are undeleted, but I add the files undeleted by all admins because of PDD on the page. I do this until about 10 January or later if there are still undeletions waiting. Greetings - Romaine (talk) 20:45, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Do newly uploaded files count? If yes, you can add all from Category:Books by André Gide. Thanks, Yann (talk) 08:19, 12 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes they do count. I have just added them. If there are any more files newly uploaded, you can add them to the page or here on my talk page. In the past days the deletion log has been become dry regarding PDD restorations so this morning I did the last check. Romaine (talk) 08:35, 12 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

edit

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 18:12, 17 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi VGrigas (WMF), On Commons it is a requirement to meet the copyright laws regarding mentioning the source where a file is coming from. Because of this, and more, the Commons community has set as rule that the author is always mentioned without exceptions.
Having seen various logo contests in the past decades, having mentioned the author (on the file page only) has commonly not provided a serious problem (for what I have seen). Greetings - Romaine (talk) 01:29, 18 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Campaign:wlm-li edit

Denkmalnummer is nu aangepast. Groetjes - Romaine (talk) 00:00, 19 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for uploading File:Leenderkapel op Leenderberg in 1917.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

WLM-UK 2013 unfiltered has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

WLM 2022 edit

Hi Romaine, you're updating all the campaigns for wlm. Thanks. Germany takes part, do you need further information? Greetings Z thomas 07:23, 31 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Z, Thanks for reaching out! To my knowledge everything stays the same as previous years, so most things should work fine. However, I came across three things that need a look into:
  • The banner for WLM has two functions. One is to get people's attention and participate. The second is, when participants have gone out to take photographs and return like a week later at home to upload the photos, normally the banner is there so participants can easily navigate back to the project page. For experienced users not much needed, but for newcomers navigation at Wikipedia is far from optimal. Sadly, there is one user on the German Wikipedia who has some rights, and disables the second function of the banner by changing the settings so that the banner is only shown 5 times. This results in less uploads. If the German community has wants this, I will respect this, but I haven't seen any discussion in the past years about it. I must say that I do not follow the discussions on the German Wikipedia. If a community decides to something like this, I usually get informed about it, but that did not happen here so it gave me the impression this user acted on his own. If you know such a discussion has taken place, please let me know. Otherwise maybe a discussion can take place on de-wiki. To be very clear: there is no rule that a banner must have such a limitation in visibility. To avoid banner blindness it is recommended to limit the visibility of banners, but with WLM not showing a banner has in the past proven that this caused a huge loss of uploads.
  • As in previous years, the design of the German banner is different and contains a nice slide of images. When I just tested the banner, the slide worked a bit differently: it now does not slide smoothly but jumps only left-right when hoovering over. This is not the result of changes in the banner itself, but in the code of MediaWiki (or otherwise how browsers function). This is beyond my knowledge and I recommend to have someone with more expertise look into it. So I will enable the banner, but it can use a small fix.
  • We ask every team to also provide the basic information of how to participate in English for those users who do not speak German. I see you made a good start at Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Germany, but what would be good to add is how non-native speakers can upload.
Thanks! Romaine (talk) 21:07, 31 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Romaine
thanks for your answer and support.
Many people in the German community don't like banners at all. But I guess there is no generall agreement how to handle the bannner
I guess the sliding banner was created by User:Martin Kraft, maybe he can support
I try to add more english information at "Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Germany". Greetings from Germany Z thomas 05:04, 2 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Z thomas, Have you heard anything from Martin Kraft yet? Greetings - Romaine (talk) 10:58, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Z thomas, Romaine, although I am the one, who originally designed this banner, I have no access to the central notice preferences. I think, you need to ask DerHexer for that.
But I agree with Thomas, that the German Community is very sensitiv to banners.
Concerning the smooth-scrolling-hover-effect: I just checked it and the animation it is working in the desktop versions of Firefox, Chrome and Edge. What browser/system are you on Romaine?
// Martin K. (talk) 19:18, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Martin K., Having access is not really the issue as I have access too. I use the most up-to-date version of Firefox (and checking in Google Chrome it has the same issue), and the animation effect how it was in previous years is different from how it is now. Now there is only a short left-right movement, in previous years it went more smoothly left or right. Romaine (talk) 00:40, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Do you possibly use a different monitor / screen resolution now, Romaine? Because in this implementation, the amount of movement pepends on the with of the browser window relative to the with of the image bar. // Martin K. (talk) 07:58, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Martin K., I use the same resolution as previous years. Also by making my browser smaller, the issue remains. Maybe you and me can do a Zoom call? Romaine (talk) 13:55, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Big thanks for the update! The central banner should look like this. --Filipinayzd (talk) 11:04, 2 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done Hi @Romaine, this is a contribution submitted for this year's edition. However, it is not automatically categorized under an specific year (i.e. Images from Wiki Loves Fashion 2022 in the Philippines). -Filipinayzd (talk)
Hi @Romaine, I'd like to follow up with our request. Regards, Filipinayzd (talk) 12:43, 9 September 2022 (UTC).Reply
Hi Filipinayzd, Sorry for the delay, the past week was extremely busy, and it is still busy.
Regarding the banner: I hope you have asked someone else to look into it.
Regarding the category, normally with a photo contest we have a separate template for each edition of a photo contest. The template then has in the name the year in what the contest takes place. Looking into the template (it has no year in the title), the category is without year. The best way to fix this is probably by creating the 2022 template, and replace it on all the file pages. This I can do with my bot. Romaine (talk) 11:23, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Request to create a new copyright tag for Governmental works edit

A lots of governments (can be central, provincial or local) let others to redistribute, share and adapt their works which are there in their official governmental websites without any specific permission. They have certain conditions like-

  • Need of proper attribution to the source,
  • adaptive use only if it is used in respected and non-objectionable manner.

I want to request editors to create a new copyright tag template so those files from these government websites can be uploaded. We can't use the creative commons license because they have not mentioned it, also they states that all rights to the contents are copyrighted by them. So to use the files, we must need a new copyright tag. Examples: Government of West Bengal, Government of Bangladesh. Ku423winz1 (talk) 16:18, 5 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ku423winz1, I suspect often the Template:Attribution only license is used for cases like those. I have no knowledge of what the procedure must be when a new license template is needed. Usually I refer to Commons:Copyright tags and on the talk page you can ask questions. Maybe already a license template exists for your purpose. I know that for government works the Template:PD-USGov is used. More importantly is the question if the copyright status of the government websites is allowed on Commons. The first one you link (West Bengal) seems okay, but the second one (Bangladesh) indicates that a derivate work is not allowed (and this must be allowed to be uploaded on Commons). Greetings - Romaine (talk) 04:58, 14 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
