Dr. Soper Dies, Served Manor Church 25 Years. ... by his wife early ninth Association the Pelhams to the was its present church building which was constructed in 1919 The Huguenot church is the second one to be erected m and dates back 1870’s Dr Soper minister He is survived two sons C Kenneth Soper of armingdale L I and the Rev Willard Butler Soper minister of the irst Congregational Church Manchester N IL a daughter Miss Eleanor Starbuck Soper of the home address and four grandchildren The body will repose at the Huguenot Memorial Church tomorrow from 2 to 5 pm and from 7 to 9 pm A service will be conducted Saturday at 2 pm at the church by the minister the Rev Dr William C Schram Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery The Rev Willard Philander Soper DD 80 of Glen Head L I minister ot the Huguenot Memorial Presbyterian Church Pelham Manor from 1928 until his retirement in 1953 died this morning at his home A native of Verona N Y he was born on Aug 14 1882 son of the late Willard H and Emma Jane Wilson Soper He was graduated in 1904 from Hamilton College where he played football and baseball and was a member j of the Pentagon Senior Honorary Society He is a 1907 alumnus of Union Theological Seminary where he served as president of the alumni council In 1923 he received an honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity from Hamilton He was named minister emeritus in 1953 Dr Soper who lived in Long Island since 1953 was a charter member of the Pelham Rotary Club In 1918 he was religious work director of the YMCA unde served two terms as moderator of the Westchester Presbytery Began Ministry in 1907 Besides his ministry in Pelham Manor he served as assistant minister of the Central Presbyterian Church Brooklyn from 1907 to 1909 and as minister of the Emanuel Reformed Church Castleton - on - Hudson the Stone Presbyterian Church Clinton N Y Bergin Reformed Church Jersey City N J and the irst Presbyterian Church in Stamford Conn On Sept 24 1913 he married the former Eleanor Butler of Brooklyn Dr Soper resigned as minister of the Huguenot Me-morial Church on April 30 1953 aftei serving there for 25 years During his pastorate a church house was constructed in 1931 a residence for the assistant minister in 1950 and about 12 memorial windows were added to
