editDies at 85. William B. R. Mason, publisher emeritus of the Bound Brook Chronicle, died yesterday (March 23, 1944) In Somerset Hospital.
W. B. R. Mason Dies, Famed As Publisher. Bound Brook, New Jersey. William B. R. Mason, 85, of 32 W. Second Street, for more than 50 years publisher of the Bound Brook Chronicle, died yesterday (March 23, 1944) in Somerset Hospital where he had been confined for three weeks. He had been in poor health for, the past five years. Mr. Mason had a long and distinguished career in journalism and in furthering community projects here. He was very active in the New Jersey Press Association, and took a part in Republican affairs in Somerset County for many years. Was School Teacher. He was born in Somerville, May 10, 1858, the son of the late Tethuel and Susan Ramsey Mason. He began his career as a teacher in one-room schoolhouse in South Branch. Mr. Mason's newspaper career began when he was employed to cover South Branch news by the late Charles B. Honeyman, publisher of the Somerville Messenger. Later, Mr. Mason purchased a weekly newspaper, The Casket, published in Whitehouse. In 1888 he moved his newspaper to Bound Brook and renamed it the Bound Brook Chronicle. He published The Chronicle until his retirement in 1937. His activity in the New Jersey Press Association dates back to 1896, when he was elected a member of the executive committee of the organization. He became vice-president in 1898 and president in 1899. He was treasurer of the association from 1901-1937, and upon his retirement in 1937 was made treasurer emeritus. Honored by Rutgers On October 8, 1934, he received the Rutgers University Award for outstanding service in journalism. The award was presented by Dr. Robert C. Clothier, president of the university. He was one of the founders of the Bound Brook Water Company, and was its treasurer emeritus at the time of his death. He was also the founder of the Bound Brook Building and Loan Association, and chairman of its board of directors when he died, and was a trustee of Somerset Hospital. He was active in the establishment of the Bound Brook Hospital more than 40 years ago. At the time of his death he was associated with the Bound Brook Chapter of the American Red Cross, of which he was at one time the chairman, a member of the Washington Campground Association, and of the Knights of Pythias. Named Postmaster. Mr. Mason was named postmaster in Bound Brook in 1889, and held the office until 1893. He again became postmaster from 1897 until 1913. In 1936, residents of the borough gave a testimonial dinner in his honor on the occasion of his 78th birthday, at which time 17 local spokesmen from different walks of life paid tribute to him. Mr. Mason is survived by three sons, Randolph Mason of Woodbury, Conn.; David Mason of Oregon, and Townsend Mason, who is associated with the U. S. Forest Service in Montana and Washington, D. C. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
