Glockenspiel beim Juwelier Abeler Poststraße, Wuppertal, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Februar 2016

Das Glockenspiel wurde 1951 mit 12 Klangkörpern gebaut, 1958 auf 28 und 1993 auf 37 Glocken erweitert. Ebenfalls 1958 wird das Glockenspiel ergänzt um eine große Mercator-Weltkarte, auf der Uhren anzeigen, wie spät es in Honolulu, New York, Moskau, Ceylon oder Tokio ist.

Viermal täglich erklingt das Glockenspiel mit monatlich wechselnden Melodien. Dazu drehen sich die Wuppertaler Originale Zuckerfritz und August Callenbach.

Zu jeder Viertelstunde erscheint der griechische Gott der Zeit Chronos und dreht die Sanduhr um. Zur vollen Stunde kommt rechts der Tod heraus und schneidet die vergangene Stunde ab.


Das 1840 eröffnete Geschäft mit eigener Goldschmiede- und Uhrmacherwerkstatt beherbergte lange Zeit das Wuppertaler Uhrenmuseum, wo Instrumente aus 5.000 Jahren Zeitmessung zu sehen waren.

Im Herbst 2016 wurde das Uhrenmuseum geschlossen, da die Besucherzahlen kontinuierlich zurückgingen. Die Exponate versteigert.
