Front entrance Routemasters
The Routemaster bus was in the vast majority built as a rear entrance bus, most of which featured an open platform (the RM/RML buses), but with some also using a close-able rear door (the RMC/RCL coaches). There were however some built from new with a front entrance:
- The 1962 prototype RMF1254 (reg. 254 CLT) - based on the longer RML, but with a close-able doorway immediately behind the front axle, with the stairs fitted immediately behind the driver's cab
- The 1964/5 Northern Routemasters (a.k.a the RMFs) - 50 buses based on the prototype
- The 1966/7 BEA Routemasters (a.k.a the RMAs) - 65 coaches in the shorter (RM) length
- The 1966 prototype FRM1 (reg. KGY 4D) - an attempt at a front entrance/rear engine layout, with the door in front of the front axle
