Hours of Simon de Varie

collection highlight from the National Library of the Netherlands
English: Book of Hours (`Hours of Simon de Varie'; use of Paris), ca. 1455. Illuminated with miniatures attributed to Jean Fouquet, Master of Jean Rolin and Dunois Master. Now scattered in 3 volumes between Getty Museum (Ms.7) and the National Library of the Netherlands (Ms 74 G 37 & 74 G 37a).
Français : Livre d'heures de Simon de Varye, conservé en trois volumes à la Bibliothèque royale des Pays-Bas et au Getty Center. Peint vers 1455 par le Maître de Dunois, le Maître de Jean Rolin et Jean Fouquet.
Nederlands: Het derde handschrift, nu in het Getty, dook op bij H.M. Fletcher in Londen en werd in 1979 verkocht aan het echtpaar Gerald Borrmannin Lafayette, Californië. Het J. Paul Getty Museum kocht het handschrift in 1985. Het was door de bestudering van dit handschrift dat François Avril de opdrachtgever kon bepalen.

References Provenance: Original book made for Simon de Varie. It was divided in three parts by Philippe de Béthune (1561-1649). This volume (KB 74G37) was obtained by Samuel van Huls (1655-1734), mayor of The Hague from 1701-1702. His collection was auctioned between 4 September and 13 November 1730, where the manuscript was acquired by Johan Hendrik van Wassenaer Obdam (1683-1745). In August 1750 it was auctioned and bought by William IV, Prince of Orange (1711-1751) and inherited by his son William V, Prince of Orange (1748-1806). His son William I of the Netherlands (1772-1843) donated it to the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in 1816.

References Provenance: Original book made for Simon de Varie. It was divided in three parts by Philippe de Béthune (1561-1649). It came in the posession of the collector Ambroise Firmin-Didot. At the sale of his collection in 1882 it was bought by antiquarian bookseller Joseph Baer & Co in Frankfurt am Main from whom it was purchased by the KB in 1890.
