Target of sidebar link: MediaWiki:Upload-url/ownwork --> MediaWiki:Upload-url/ownwork

Page heading: MediaWiki:Upload/ownwork --> Upload your own work

Page intro: MediaWiki:Uploadtext/ownwork -->

This form is only for uploading your own work – files that you have created and where you own the copyright.

To upload work created by someone else, please use a different form.

Step 1. Is this your work?

  • Photographs or videos you have created of:
    • natural landscapes, animals, and plants
    • people that are either public figures or are taken at public events
    • useful or non-artistic objects (tools, dinner plates, etc.)
  • Graphs, maps, diagrams, and audio you have created entirely yourself.
  • Works that are under a free license that you have modified:
    • like above but the original work was not yours
    • the original author(s) need to be credited according to the license terms
  • Works which contain other copyrighted works (derivative works) – these are not permitted, so don't upload them!
    • Screenshots of TV shows, movies, DVDs, and software.
    • Photographs of art, statues, commercial packaging and often toys.
    • Drawings of copyrighted characters from TV, Comics, or Movies, even if you drew them yourself.

Step 2. Help people find this file. (Commons has over 105 million files)

  • Change the destination filename to something descriptive. Don't use default filenames!
  • Use the information box on the right
  • Write a clear description for the work you are uploading.
    Try to help people searching commons find your work.
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find categories.
  • Consider adding location data to your image, see Commons:Geocoding for more information.

Copy this into the summary box
and fill out the details
:

{{Information
|Description=
|Date=
|Source={{own}}
|Author= MyName (~~~)
|Permission=

Step 3. Select a Free Content license for your work.

When you upload your work to commons you are donating it to the world by using a free content license which allow everyone to use, modify, and redistribute your work for any purpose. This donation is non-revocable. Although you retain the copyright to your work, all works submitted to commons must have at least these freedoms. To learn more about the charitable mission of the Wikimedia Foundation visit the foundation website.

  • Commons offers multiple licensing options. They differ primarily in their attribution requirements and the existence of additional terms that require works based on your work to be under similar free terms.
  • Choose a license from the drop-down box, or write one in the summary box (from Commons:Copyright tags).
  • It is your responsibility to understand what rights you are keeping for yourself.
Step 4. Has your work been published before? (if so, help us verify that this is a rightful copy)
  • If your work is as yet unpublished, you can proceed with the upload.
  • If your work was published on the internet under a free license and a credit to the same name or nickname as you are using now, you can proceed with the upload.
  • If your file was published without a free license, or with a different credit name, or with no credit at all, please send a confirmation E-mail to the address on this page and add {{OTRS pending|month=May|day=5|year=2024}} with details about the previous publication in the permission field below.
Other tips
  • Upload the highest resolution file you have, and don't watermark your work.
  • Only upload file types which Commons accepts (SVG, PNG, JPG, GIF, Ogg, DjVU, …).
  • Compromising or embarrassing images of non-public people taken without their knowledge are often problematic. Use good judgment.
  • Wikimedia Commons is for educational or informational content.

fromflickr edit

Elements of Special:Upload:

Text of sidebar link: MediaWiki:Uploadbtn/fromflickr --> Upload file

Target of sidebar link: MediaWiki:Upload-url/fromflickr --> MediaWiki:Upload-url/fromflickr

Page heading: MediaWiki:Upload/fromflickr --> Upload work from Flickr

Page intro: MediaWiki:Uploadtext/fromflickr -->

This form is only for uploading work found on Flickr created by someone else (not you). To upload work from somewhere other than Flickr, please use a different form.

The statement "This photo is public" does not say anything about copyright. It only says that the photo is publicly viewable. The license logo and link are located under the "Additional Information" heading. Please also see our guide about uploading Flickr images, which ones are permitted, and our additional caveats. If you need live help, feel free to ask it at Commons:Help desk.

Flickr images have 7 different license options. There is also a public domain collection, Flickr: The Commons, uploaded by participating organizations. 2 of the 6 Creative Commons (CC) licensing options are OK here:

Flickr image info License License tag
  Some rights reserved Attribution {{Cc-by-2.0}}
   Some rights reserved Attribution-ShareAlike {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}}
  Public domain Public Domain Dedication (CC0) {{Cc-zero}}
  United States government work US government work {{PD-USGov}}, Category:PD-USGov license tags
  No known copyright restrictions Unclear {{Flickr-no known copyright restrictions}}
Preferably add a tag like {{PD-old-70}} or {{PD-US-expired}}
No rights reserved Public Domain {{PD-author}} or {{PD-copyright holder}}
(retired by Creative Commons)
  Public domain Public Domain Mark (PDM) {{PD-old-70}}, {{PD-US-expired}}, USGov, etc. when labeling existing public domain works
{{PDMark-owner}} when Flickr uploader is clearly the copyright holder, and not yourself
{{Cc-zero}} when Flickr uploader is clearly yourself, better to also do convert on Flickr
  All rights reserved None   NOT OK
    Some rights reserved Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs   NOT OK
    Some rights reserved Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike   NOT OK
   Some rights reserved Attribution-NonCommercial   NOT OK
   Some rights reserved Attribution-NoDerivs   NOT OK
The icon   "BY" means the image license requires attribution, as in an image is "BY" a certain person.   SA is for "Share Alike". Licenses with NC (  - non-commercial use only) or ND (  - no derivative works) are not OK here. If the image is not OK, consider asking the author to release their work under a free license such as CC-BY (Creative Commons Attribution license), or CC-BY-SA (Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike). See also Commons:OTRS.
Flickr can search its images by license. Click the "see more" links for each license. See the advanced search also. The Creative Commons search options are at the bottom.

Below the Information template, insert some categories that describe the content shown in the work. Fill in the description. Change the destination filename to something descriptive and meaningful. Be sure to upload the 'Original' version of the image, nothing smaller!

Keep in mind that Flickr users often don't know about copyright. If it is suspected that they are not the author of the work, it may be deleted here. Do not upload images from Flickr users listed on Commons:Questionable Flickr images.

This form is only for uploading work found from a government source. To upload work created by someone else, please use a different form.

Some countries have laws that state that certain works created by government employees for public use are ineligible for copyright, and therefore in the public domain.

Images on government or government agency websites are not necessarily public domain; always look for copyright notices.

Countries:

When uploading a government work, always link to the source webpage or explain how you found and identified the work. If works cannot be confirmed as created by the government, they will likely be deleted.

fromwikimedia edit

Elements of Special:Upload:

Text of sidebar link: MediaWiki:Uploadbtn/fromwikimedia --> Upload file

Target of sidebar link: MediaWiki:Upload-url/fromwikimedia --> MediaWiki:Upload-url/fromwikimedia

Page heading: MediaWiki:Upload/fromwikimedia --> Transfer a work from another Wikimedia project

Page intro: MediaWiki:Uploadtext/fromwikimedia -->

This form is only for uploading work originally uploaded at another Wikimedia project. To upload work from other sources, please use a different form.

Use the CommonsHelper tool to easily transfer images from other Wikimedia projects (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikinews etc.) to Commons. Fill out the details, and it will give you a summary you can cut-and-paste into the box below.

No fair use Commons DOES NOT ALLOW FAIR USE. Fair-use images at English Wikipedia, and other projects that allow fair use, must NOT be transferred here.
Source info Please evaluate the strength of the argument of the uploader. Images without clear, believable source information should NOT be transferred - get the source information cleared up first.
Upload hi-res For images, make sure you've saved the original, high-resolution version of the file. If the filename you saved on your computer starts with something like "300px-", then you didn't get the highest resolution version.
Descriptive name If the original had an undescriptive name (especially default camera file names), use this opportunity to improve it. This reduces the likelihood of name clashes, and allows media to be found more easily.
Link to original Always link to the original image page as the source. We need to be sure that media here truly is freely licensed, so if you don't provide this link, we might have to delete the file from Commons.
Add categories Please add categories to the image. Categories help make work accessible at the Commons by allowing others to find and use the work.

License tags:

{{GFDL-self}} should become {{GFDL-user-w|projectcode|projectname|username}}

  • projectcode: e.g. "de" (Wikipedia is default) or "ja:wiktionary"
  • projectname: human-readable project name corresponding to the project code above, e.g. "German Wikipedia", "Japanese Wiktionary"
  • username: user name of the original uploader

Same parameters for {{PD-self}} being converted to {{PD-user-w|projectcode|projectname|username}}.

If you are transferring a file from the English Wikipedia, be extra careful with files tagged as {{PD-US}}. The Commons allows the {{PD-US}} tag only for U.S. works. If the work is not a U.S. work (for instance, because it was first published elsewhere, or the author was not American and didn't live in the U.S.), upload the work only if the author died more than 70 years ago. If so, tag the file as {{PD-old}}.

Co-ordinating multilingual versions edit

See also Commons:Administrators/Requests and votes/MediaWiki Update Bot, user:MediaWiki Update Bot.

Because this is a bit of an abuse of the uselang method, there is some extra work. if you have a page uselang=DEownwork, for all the elements such as the menu links, there will be no DEownwork message defined. It won't know it should fall back to DE - instead it will fall back to the default (English). So to fix this, it is necessary to put this:

MediaWiki:Key/XXuselang == {{MediaWiki:Key/XX}}

For these messages:

Top right corner

Tab name

Left menu

(not sure which one of these three is the 'search' heading on the side bar)

(not sure which one)
