Deutsch: Das Schweizer Velonummern Museum zeigt die weltweit grösste und vollständigste Sammlung behördlicher Fahrradkennzeichen (Schweizerdeutsch: Velonummern), welche zwischen 1892 und 1988 in der Schweiz geprägt wurden. Das virtuelle Museum umfasst rund 2'500 verschiedene Schilder.

Das Ziel unseres Museums ist, der Öffentlichkeit eine möglichst vollständige Dokumentation der Schweizer Velonummern zur Verfügung zu stellen. Dazu eignet sich ein virtuelles Museum besonders gut. Es ist für Interessierte aus der ganzen Welt, rund um die Uhr, während 365 Tagen im Jahr zugänglich.

Die Vollständigkeit der Dokumentation von über 98% aller Schilder ist nur möglich dank der Unterstützung verschiedener Sammler, welche laufend Fotos fehlender Schilder beitragen. Fahrräder waren damals auf öffentlichen Strassen nur mit der obligatorischen Haftpflicht-Versicherung zugelassen. Zu diesem Zweck musste, in der Anfangszeit für mehrere Jahre, ab den 1920-er Jahren für jedes Jahr, ein neues Kennzeichen gekauft und am Fahrrad angebracht werden. Für die Produktion und Ausgabe der Fahrrad-Kennzeichen waren die 26 Kantone zuständig.

Kein anderes Land hat bei der Gestaltung von Fahrrad-Kennzeichen eine derart kreative Vielfalt entwickelt. Typisch schweizerisch lebte jeder Kanton seine Autonomie auch bei der Gestaltung der Fahrrad-Kennzeichen aus. Dieser in der Regel negativ konnotierte «Kantönligeist» wirkte sich in Bezug auf die Kreativität in hohem Masse positiv aus, was zu einer bunten und äusserst interessanten Palette an Formen, Grössen, Farben, Schriften, Systemen, Materialien und Verarbeitungen führte. Eine im Bereich von Fahrzeug-Kennzeichen weltweit einzigartige Vielfalt.

English: The Museum of Swiss Bicycle License Plates displays the world's largest and most complete collection of official bicycle license plates (Swiss German: Velonummern [bicycle numbers]), which were embossed in Switzerland between 1892 and 1988. The aim of our museum is to provide the public with the most complete possible documentation of Swiss bicycle license plates. A virtual museum is particularly suitable for this. It is accessible to interested parties from all over the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
