How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

I want to copy a content from a book that was written in 1908, and almost all copyright free nowadays. It's not to be copied and pasted to the article directly. I can create a userspace like User:Haoreima/Khamba Thoibi in Wikipedia. The content is only a few. It's the story portion of the Khamba Thoibi legend in the book "The Meitheis", written by T. C. Hodson. The book is available in the archive.org in many versions including this one. After copied and pasted in my userspace, then I will do all the simplification process to make it suitable for the simple English wiki. After thoroughly reading en:Wikipedia:Public domain, I think I could. Sir, do you think it's ok? Haoreima (talk) 10:15, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Haoreima, works by Thomas Callan Hodson (1871–1953) that were published in the United Kingdom (like this book) are still fully copyrighted in the United Kingdom and other European countries. You have to wait until 2024 before this changes. However, the book is in the public domain in the United States (as it has been published before 1927) and also in India (as the copyright expired ten years earlier in 2014). Independently from this, I recommend not to copy this in verbatim to the Simple Wikipedia. You should use your own words and adapt it to the editing guidelines of simple. Instead, it would be more preferable to transcribe it for Wikisource. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 13:33, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

VRTS permission for Inna files

Hello.

On January 3, 2022, VRTS permissions were sent at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from Global Records, the record label with which Inna has a contract and the producer of videos with Inna, for the following files deleted on January 1 from commons.wikimedia.org:

Please, check and restore the files. Best regards.Jonathan Archer (talk) 07:37, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Jonathan Archer, File:Inna at Masked Singer Romania 2021.jpg and File:Inna shooting a Music Video.jpg have been restored thanks to the updates of ticket:2021101910005937. Are you the photographer of these photos? Or is it someone else? Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 09:05, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Hello. Thank you! The copyright holder of these images is Global Records. I contacted the record label, requested and got the two photos for Inna as well as the publishing agreement on commons.wikimedia.org under the following free license: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International. Best regards. Jonathan Archer (talk) 09:59, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi Jonathan Archer, please never claim again at Commons authorship using the {{Own}} and {{Self}} templates as you did here and here for photos you obtained from a third party. Attribute the correct copyright holder right from the beginning and give a proper source where you declare how that photo was obtained by you. This has now been fixed: [1] and [2]. I will take care of the other uploads related to this ticket as well. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 10:12, 4 January 2022 (UTC)
@Jonathan Archer: In addition to the two files from Inna named above, File:Carla's Dreams CSD.jpg, File:Carla's Dreams Logo.png, and File:The Motans Logo.png have been restored as well. --AFBorchert (talk) 16:26, 6 January 2022 (UTC)

Photo permission

Dear Andreas, forgive the intrusion. I am writing to ask permission to replicate a photograph you took of St Brigit's cathedral, Kildare, in an article I have written. I came across the photo on Wikimediacommons some time ago and saved a copy in case I ended up choosing it, but I'm afraid I cannot find the original page again. The shot is of the cathedral on a clear day, similar to the picture at this link - if that helps (https://www.thejournal.ie/neil-jackman-kildare-beaghmore-kilkenny-1399033-Apr2014/).

I am seeking permission to use your photo in an article entitled “Holy wells, saintly authority, and the fountain of life in early Irish hagiography” in a book tentatively entitled Holy Wells of Ireland: Sacred Realms and Popular Domains to be published in 2023 by University of Indiana Press. If it is possible to communicate via email I would greatly appreciate that. Kind regards, Shane_IRL

Hi Shane IRL, perhaps you are looking for File:Kildare Cathedral SE 2013 09 04.jpg. More of my photos of Kildare Cathedral can be found here. Please follow the Original file links on the file description pages to download the full resolution. You are free to use them, provided you attribute it to “Andreas F. Borchert”. You can contact me by email by following the link Email this user among the Tools in the left navigation panel. Kind regards and all the best for your book project, AFBorchert (talk) 23:23, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Ah thank you so much! Yes, that is the photo - I think it's such a nice shot. I will of course credit you, and thank you for providing the year also.
Much appreciated,

viele unbearbeitete Fotos...

Brauche hier also dringend und endlich Hilfe...

URV

--Chris06 (talk) 10:44, 4 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Fehlermeldung

Hallo AFBorchert,
Kannst Du helfen?
Viele Grüße — Reinhard Dietrich (talk) 06:08, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Use this file bei Weitere Einzelheiten angezeigt.

Gothic churches Category

I note that you have been removing this category from a lot of categories. But you have not been replacing it with an appropriate alternative such as "neo gothic" or "gothic revival". Why is this? Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:13, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Laurel Lodged, thank you for your message. I wanted to contact you as well but unfortunately I had not much time yesterday. You added numerous churches to Category:Gothic churches in Ireland without being Gothic at all. All these changes were plain wrong and I do not know how you came up with these categorizations. Such categorizations should not be done without knowing somewhat about architectural styles. For many of these churches we need better categories than Gothic Revival as there was an extensive period where some elements like pointed arches were preserved but where the builders had no deeper understanding of the Gothic architectural style. In mid-19th-century, Gothic Revival started after a deep study of medieval Gothic architecture. One of the most prominent architects was Augustus W. Pugin who worked in Ireland himself and influenced others like James Joseph McCarthy. Sometimes the style before is called Georgian Gothic for which we have no category yet. Another user used Gothick instead but this term is not really established for these kind of churches in Ireland. In my opionion it is best to avoid a categorization in this regard as long as we have no truly fitting category. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 12:36, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
The reason that I made so many interventions in the Gothic category was to correct the errors of another editor who used the spelling "Gothick". I thought it best to correct the spelling and then to examine the articles later to see if they were indeed Gothic. Many are not Gothic; however, some are indeed Gothic-revival. Why do you say that churches such as "Category:Sacred Heart, Templemore" are not Gothic-revival? Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:05, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Laurel Lodged, two things: Firstly, “Gothick“ is not a spelling error, see Gothick. However it is uncommon within an Irish context – at least I haven't seen this term yet in scholarly literature about Irish architecture. Secondly, Category:Sacred Heart, Templemore is Gothic Revival but not Gothic. I didn't add Gothic Revival for this church yesterday because of my limited time. I wanted to get rid of the wrong Gothic attributions first. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 13:17, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
I don't think that the spelling variant is a local Irish issue; the Category:Gothick is currently unpopulated. Is it your intention to revisit all those categories from which you removed the Gothic category to see if they are eligible for Gothic-revival or similar category? Thanks. Laurel Lodged (talk) 16:18, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi Laurel Lodged, apparently you misunderstood me. “Gothick“ is not a “spelling variant” of “Gothic”. “Gothick“ describes post-medieval architecture with pointed archs etc. that predates the proper “Gothic Revival” period where medieval Gothic architecture became studied again. The term “revival” is commonly used in connection with a style, if a style of previous times is revisited again after carefully studying and understanding it. (This, however, does not mean that it is meticulously cloned but properly eclecticized and merged into something new.) But for some extended period we have buildings which mimick selected elements of the Gothic style without any deeper understanding. “Gothic Revival” as term appears inappropriate as the Gothic style has not been properly revived again in these buildings, hence “Gothick” is sometimes used as a somewhat derogatory term to describe this kind of architecture. Let me quote from the Oxford Dictionary of Architecture:
Gothick. C18 style only vaguely based on archaeologically correct Gothic, and more connected with a taste for the exotic, so really a branch of Rococo frivolity. [..]
I hope this helps. Regarding your other questions: I rarely go through all categories etc. I am mainly concerned with my own pictures and categories created by myself. Your edits popped up manifold in my watchlist and so I started to apply fixes. But my time is limited. However, you are always invited to ask me if in doubt. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 17:07, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
@Laurel Lodged: Regarding your recent edits [5], [6], [7], [8]: None of them is a Gothic Revival church as elaborated above. None of their architects had any proper understanding of Gothic. Take for example Donagh Church, Carndonagh, which was built in 1769. This is plain Georgian Gothic but not Gothic Revival. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 21:39, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
I have created Category:Georgian Gothic church buildings to cater for the above misclassifications. Laurel Lodged (talk) 08:21, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022

Hallo AFBorchert,
