Hey, in the future please upload new pictures under a new name and not over another picture. I have deleted this picture as it is probably copyrighted anyway. A picture is copyrighted automatically unless you know otherwise. Thanks, Yonatan talk 19:43, 17 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, nowadays photos are automatically copyrighted unless stated otherwise - they don't need to have a little something attached saying they're copyrighted. Also, you're welcome to upload a different free picture of a tornado under a new name instead of overwriting the current one. You can find pictures of tornadoes that are likely to be free here on flickr. Wikimedia Commons does not allow fair use like Wikipedia and other unfree materials. Hi, your image is not there anymore as it was deleted. As I said earlier, if you wish to upload a *FREE* picture of a tornado you're welcome to do so under a new name (not overwriting the old one). Thanks, Yonatan talk 16:42, 19 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

THAT STUPIT MECHA THING WANTS MY NONCOPYRIGHTED INAGE GONE!!! Can you please tell it to F*** OFF?!!! Most of the images i use has no tag on the site!!! this image can from the saikano section of saikano on WIKIPEDIA!!! KANPAI!!!--Chris Hansen Fan 16:33, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
That "stupid mecha" happens to be a commons administrator. You are required to be civil to all users (including administrators) or you risk getting yourself blocked.
As for the images in question it is only natural to tag images as "unlicensed" if you do not license them.
-- Cat chi? 20:11, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Just noting that I only marked the image as "no license"; you need to add the appropriate license to an image so we know what copyright it is under. Also, all images on Wikipedia are not uploadable here; fair use images are allowed there but on Commons we only accept free licenses.

That particular image also needs a source so we know where it came from. If it is from the English wikipedia you just need to provide a link to the image page there so we can check. If it's from a website or somewhere else, again, a link is necessary so we can double-check the license. Thanks in advance, and if you have more questions feel free to ask : ) -- Editor at Largetalk 16:46, 18 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re:New image

edit

No, the image you have uploaded recently is not allowable. The subject (characters and logo) are likely copyrighted and thus the image you uploaded is a derivative work and is not free. Derivative works of non-free subjects are not allowable on Commons.

I would also appreciate it if you could not scream at me constantly; simple explanations and questions are far more likely to get you friendly explanatory answers. For the record, it was not me but another administrator who deleted the image I had marked as no license that you wrote me about before, as that image was also a copyvio on top of not having a license. Any admin who comes across a copyvio or a questionable image is likely to delete it, with or without warning.

If you don't want them deleted, a) don't upload copyvios to begin with or b) if you are not sure if it IS a copyvio, instead of adding a comment in capitals on the talk page you can politely ask if someone could check the status of your image. You can ask someone directly (and I am more than willing to check your images if you are not sure) or on the help desk. Thanks in advance! -- Editor at Largetalk 16:53, 20 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Much better, thanks : ) As I said above, it isn't allowable and will have to be deleted because the subject is copyrighted. Most logos and anime characters are; if you want to upload images of them to add to an article (and only if you want to add it to an article) it has to be done on the project you are using it on and a reasonable fair use rationale must be given. If you can find anime where the subject is not copyrighted/is under a free license and the image is free then it is alright to upload; but other than that they are generally non-free derivatives. -- Editor at Largetalk 17:04, 20 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
[edit conflict with SB Johnny] In reply to your message "So please tell my WHY IN THE HELL CANT I USE THAT DAMN IMAGE???!!!" I'd like to point out the above two messages, the statements in the messages above that from me, some of what Yonatan has said, some of the information in the warnings about unsourced/unlicensed images above that, the page Commons:Licensing which you have been linked to numerous times, and information found many other places on this site. It has been explained; if you don't understand something in particular please ask a specific question so we can clear things up. In the case of this particular image note the following (which has already been said):
  1. [the image] isn't allowable and will have to be deleted because the subject is copyrighted
  2. Most logos and anime characters are [copyrighted]
  3. [Images of anime characters] are generally non-free derivatives
  4. Unless you know the copyright status of an image you must assume that it is copyrighted
  5. Having to visible copyright information does not mean the image is not copyrighted; it means the website does not display the copyright information
  6. Derivatives of copyrighted works such as images/characters/logos/sculptures/etc. are not allowed
This has been said before and I will not say it again; if you want something cleared up feel free to ask but please do not shout at me like I've blocked you without reason. I and others have given you a chance to figure out policy, learn, and understand how things work here and have not indicated that you would be blocked, but you are trying our patience. Please be civil and do not lose your temper or attack others. And, no more "you have been blocked" message bars on my userpage, or the page of anyone else; combining vandalism, incivility, and trolling will end you up with a large {{Blocked}} template on your talk page and it won't be a joke. Thanks. -- Editor at Largetalk 18:00, 25 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I know you're just joking around, but one more and you're outta here. We're trying to do serious things here, and you don't know those people well enough to joke with them like that. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 17:37, 25 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not much to forgive on my part. Just don't screw around with people you don't know, because they might not have time to screw around, you know?
I'm not angry at you, I'm just doing my (unpaid, volunteer) job. If part of my job is blocking you, I won't have any feelings about it one way or the other. So all you need to do is make sure not to make that part of my job. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 18:56, 25 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

What ever and Im sorry for my "outburst" I was just surrprised that a NOTHER wiki blocked me! en.wikipedia.org blocked me for what they say, Being Uncivil(whatever the hell that means, Not being a good help(I have changed that but they wont listen, Saying whats on my mind about an artical(I did not know the 1st Amend. did not matter to them) But Im sorry for that crap i said! Can you be as so kind as to unblock me now?--Chris Hansen Fan 16:07, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but under one condition and with 2 things to keep in mind. The "condition" is that you agree to under no circumstances address another user as you have addressed me above, even if they disagree with you, delete an image you uploaded, or even block you. The two things to keep in mind are as follows:
  • First, I know you got into trouble on en.wp, but I don't hold that against you (nor have I researched it... English Wikipedia's policies are not my forté).
  • Second, I'll be keeping an eye on you for a little while, and I will block you a second time if you once again make it my job to do so. If I unblock you under these circumstances and your actions and behavior proves that unblocking you was a bad idea, you can expect a much longer block next time, and I won't be unblocking on your word of honor. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 18:33, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
No problem! But there...is an image that nobody seems to know the creater so under copyright & the internet law policy, "if an image is "abandoned" and the creater is not known nor no site has the creater but many orther sites have used it then the image "MAY" be Lost, Abandoned, or Orphened and is no longer in use!" the image i have has no creater and i have searched google & every orther Image search engine and the owner was not known nor was the site it orginated from! The image is fairly Useable and I was going to use it on http://www.en.anime.wikia.com and this image was found on google under the catagory of Free Use, not copyrighted images! And in orther words I WILL NOT GET IN NO MORE TROUBLE!User:Chris Hansen Fan|Chris Hansen Fan]] 16:06, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, but our policy is that we need to know the author, and we need proof of the author's intent to relaease the file under a free license. Uploading it again (or other images falling under this version of "copyright law") will definitely mean more trouble. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 20:24, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well are you going to unblock me or am i going to have to cont. to log on thinking Im back and still cant do anything!--Chris Hansen Fan 16:02, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Done. Just make sure to abide by Wikimedia Commons policy, rather than whatever your interpretation of what the policy really should be. If you think the policy needs to changed, bring it up on the Village Pump for discussion. If you get into any trouble again, rest assured that I will still do my job, and if my job is blocking you again, that's what I'll do :). --SB_Johnny|talk|books 16:25, 2 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Let me get this straight, this is a song from 2002? Why would you think that's not copyrighted? --SB_Johnny|talk|books 17:26, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Images are copyrighted for 70 years after the death of the author. Music is 90 years, I'm pretty sure. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 02:16, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
