Redub of Terra X videos

edit

Hi Daanberg! Can you please advise which free software to use to redub the Terra X videos? My first attempt is lossy, as it had to go through MP4! Thanks! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 12:35, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello Llywelyn2000! Great question, and thanks for your interest. I render my dubs as very-low-compression QuickTime files in DaVinci Resolve, after which I convert them to WebM with a good video converter. Here are the full steps I take to record a dub:
  1. Most Terra X videos, like this one, have a link in the description to a 1080p MP4 version of the video. I download this version if available, it usually looks better than the WebM version on Commons.
  2. I record the translated lines of text in the Audacity open-source audio editor. Because it's a multitrack editor, I will usually record a bunch of videos in one project, on separate tracks. After simple trimming, I then export these tracks as lossless WAV files.
  3. I load the Terra X videos and my voicetrack WAV files into the DaVinci Resolve video editor (free but not open-source). In there, I line the voicetracks up to the voices in the original videos. Finally, I export the videos as 'Master' files, which is a default preset in DaVinci for baking a QuickTime MOV file with barely any compression. This means: low render time, but lots of hard drive space used, so be prepared for that ;-)
  4. I use the open-source Miro Video Converter to convert the master files to WebM for direct upload to Commons.
I hope this helps! If there's anything else you'd like to know, feel free to ask. Cheers! --Daanberg (talk) 19:50, 24 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
HEY! First class! Might be a good thing to add this onto a Help:Redubing page, or the Terra X project page? Many thanks and best regards.... Llywelyn2000 (talk) 13:46, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, great idea! I tried browsing around for a Terra X project page, but I haven't found it yet. Do you know where it is, by any chance? Cheers, --Daanberg (talk) 20:04, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
There isn't one, as far as I can see! But I'd suggest adding it to the main category talk page: Category talk:Videos by Terra X. Thanks again for your clear instructions, I've now created a few Welsh language videos: here, and there are a few more to do! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 08:54, 30 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
