Recent changes

  • Wikimedia projects use Translatewiki to translate the wiki interface. You can now use WatchTranslations to watch projects there. You would get an email if there are missing translations to your language. [1]
  •   There is a new dataset you can use. It shows the number of editors per country per month for a number of countries. You can read the documentation and download the dataset.

  •   The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 December. It will be on all wikis from 12 December (calendar).

Special:SuggestedTags, the page for accessing the computer-aided tagging tool, is now live for all auto-confirmed, logged-in users. There are no plans to make this tool available for anonymous or new users. Edits made using the tool are like any edit made here on Commons - they show up in recent changes and page histories, are tagged as being from the tool, and work with rollback/undo. Feedback about the tool is welcome on the tool's talk page. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

I should note that there is a known issue in the text display on the special page when viewing it while logged out. Apparently there is some strange parsing behavior that shows up in production Commons, but not on Test-Commons, BetaCommons, or local development instances. It's getting sorted out and patched. Hi Donald Trung, File:Die Ostfriesische Landschaftliche Brandkasse Hilde van Hoorn, Bunde (2019) 01.jpg and File:Die Ostfriesische Landschaftliche Brandkasse Hilde van Hoorn, Bunde (2019) 01.jpg don't show a "small local East-Frisian bank". @Ies: , ah, yeah, I should have seen that "Landschaftliche Brandkasse" doesn't mean bank. As "Brandkasse" means "Fire insurance company", thanks for improving those files. 2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

Scoring

Participants earn points for uploading images of United States banknotes. Images are scored as follows:

Imported images

Each imported image is worth 5 points times the sum of any applicable multipliers.

Multipliers
New images

Each new image is worth 5 points times the sum of any applicable multipliers.

Images that feature both the obverse and reverse of a banknote are worth double points.

Multipliers
  • x5 tf the image is promoted to featured picture status on any Wikimedia project.
    • x10 if that project is Wikimedia Commons or one of the top 10 Wikipedias.
  • x10 if it has appeared or is scheduled to appear on the main page of any Wikimedia project.
    • x20 if that project is Wikimedia Commons or one of the top 10 Wikipedias.

Eligible images

In order for an image to be counted and scored in this contest, it must meet the following criteria (see examples):

Specified rules relates to the images themselves _ Eligibility

  • It must be free:
    • 2D scans of official denominations US currency of are not eligible for copyright.
    • Works originally published before 1924 are on the public domain (this includes banknotes).
    • Otherwise, the work is on the public domain if it was created in the United States and the creator has been dead for 70 years.
  • It must not be a duplicate of a series/variety that is already on commons unless;
  • It must not be digitally altered in any way.
