Are 2D rubbings of coins copyrighted
Drafting this to post it to the village pump of Wikimedia Commons.
As far as I can tell copyright © exists to protect works that are creative enough to not be considered derivative works or only simple geometrical shapes.
Coin rubbings are an odd question, at the top image the author of this file (Eduardo Toda y Güell) published it in the treaty port city of Shanghai in the year 1882 and later died in the year 1941, because of this this file is now in the public domain. But there is more to that, first (1st) of all this image is clearly a creative work of a Đinh Dynasty cash coin which had existed in the years 968–980. Second of all even if it were a more recent cash coin (the last ones circulated until the 1940's) the design of these coins are only simple geometric shapes and Traditional Chinese characters, I honestly wonder how creative the original Vietnamese design by itself is. Of course, in Mainland China (the People's Republic of China) Chinese calligraphy can be copyrighted if a letter is written in a creative enough manner, so this is a separate question.
But the main question is, are 2D derivative works of 3D objects (like coins) their own new copyright or not? If someone would draw the design of a copyrighted Euro coin would this be considered a derivative work? And if it is a derivative work, would that mean that if the original design enters the public domain that all derived works would also enter the public domain if they don't sufficiently add any creative differences? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:14, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
- Of course, this does not include photographs of coins, as coins are 3D objects, just the question if a 2D design of a 3D object creates new copyright ©.
- With parodies two (2) copyrights exist, one for the original work and one for the parody, the original artist has no control over the parody, but can block its distribution because they still hold the original copyright ©.
- "Commons:Derivative works" states "In summary: you cannot trace someone else's copyrighted creative drawing and upload that tracing to Commons under a new, free license because a tracing is a copy without new creative content; likewise, you cannot make a movie version of a book you just read without the permission of the author, even if you added substantial creative new material to the storyline, because the movie requires the original book author's permission— if such permission were obtained, however, the movie would likely then be considered a derivative work entitled to its own novel copyright protection. "Derivative", in this sense, does not simply mean "derived from", it means, "derived from and including new creative content which is entitled to a new copyright."" which does support my hypothesis that indeed 2 (two) copyrights exists in the case of cash coin rubbings.
- If these images are found to be ineligible for copyright © due to a lack of creative input, then this would open up millions of images to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 19:14, 24 March 2020 (UTC)
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Problems
- Some development will be slower than planned. This is because of the current pandemic. You can see the new deployment guidelines. This is to avoid risks when some persons could be unavailable.
- There was a problem when adding interwiki links. The tool you use to add interwiki links could suggest the wrong project to link to. This has now been fixed. [1][2]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 24 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 25 March. It will be on all wikis from 26 March (calendar).
Future changes
- There is a project to make editing easier for newcomers. The developers are trying to understand what initiatives different Wikipedias have to welcome newcomers. They also want to know which templates are often used for maintenance activities. You can help this project by checking if your wiki's pages are listed on Wikidata.

Het effect van corona op Wikimedia
Notice for self, as I was actually planning on going this year.
Hallo allemaal,
Ciell 13 mrt 2020 21:22 (CET)
Inschrijvingen Wikimania staan nog even open

Netherlands by city by year has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Chinese huwelijskamuletten
--Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 23:07, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

@Baomi: , hello, I recently launched the “w:en:Cash coins in art” article about ways how cash coins are integrated into art works and wanted to know if you knew of more artworks where cash coins are integrated in or used in as a motif. This page also marks the fact that I’ve imported all the information from Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website (a name which I suspect is a reference to the Primalsino / Ancient Chinrde-Chinese concept of “Primalheaven” / “Primal Heaven”), except for information related to coin Hoards (coins that were dug up by archeologists or found by random people), Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website has 205 (two-hundred-and-five) pages (35+41+83+46=205, 35 non-Chinese charms & non-(Ancient-)Chinese coins BLOG pages, 41 Chinese charms BLOG pages, 83 (Ancient-)Chinese coins BLOG pages, and 46 “mainline” (NON-BLOG) pages), of which only a handful aren’t on Wikimedia. I’ve managed to import all information related to Chinese cash coins, knife money, Zhou Dynasty coinage, Chinese (numismatic) charms, and Korean currencies to Wikimedia, and now also basically “Cash Coins miscellany” from Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website (which are all put into the “Cash coins in art” article). This is largely done to try to make Wikimedia the internet's #1 (number one) English-language website about Chinese numismatics and cash coins (and amulets) in general, I wanted to import the various articles on cash coins in culture but did not know how to properly do it, so I created the “Cash coins in art” article, but want it to grow much behind it. Furthermore, Dr. Helen Wang (The British Museum) also maintains a website coincidentally had written an article about Chinese cash coin designs in Chinese porcelain works. Dr. Helen Wang's Chinese Money Matters website is currently the only English-language website about Chinese numismatics that’s currently being updated. I’ve actually done a lot of searching for “cultural references” to cash coins, while attempting to avoid as many “fan” sources as possible, for example there is this old American animation (cartoon) called “Avatar: The Last Airbender” where cash coins are pretty frequently referenced in the show, like here: “https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Large_earth_coins”, but unfortunately all the information I could find on the cash coin designs from the show are written by fans on fan websites, so I wasn't able to include it.
I was actively looking for more examples of cash coins in art but couldn't really find it, unfortunately I am currently not in Hanoi and due to the global SARS-Coronavirus-2 pandemic have no plans to go back to Hanoi, where cash coin motifs are around almost every street corner and in many shops. As you’re Chinese you probably see a lot of cash coins in art as it’s quite common, of course, I'm not asking you to go out (as it's best to avoid doing so because of the SARS-Coronavirus-2 pandemic), but maybe you know of some more forms of cash coins in art and categorise them here properly on Wikimedia Commons, and if you know of more sources and examples I could use I’d be very happy. In South Korea cash coin token coins are used, in Tomb Raider a Japanese cash coin is a collectable item. I also know that cash coins are a collectible item in the Japanese Touhou Project and in the Chinese Beijing Perfect Life video games, but haven't found any non-fan sources to mention it to be worthy of inclusion.

Just for reference, the Wikimedia Commons category is https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:Cash_coins_in_art&mobileaction=toggle_view_mobile , I have tried to find more examples, but couldn't find that much. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:55, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
