Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear Mjrmtg,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Views from automobiles in Georgia and Florida edit

How many images within the Category:Views from automobiles in Florida are in Miami and Orlando? Because I've been thinking these might be the next places to split off images from that category. Also, which city do you think should be the next one to split off from Category:Views from automobiles in Georgia (U.S. state)? ----DanTD (talk) 12:47, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Orlando might have more as I've been on I4 and taken photos. Not sure if there'd be as many in Miami, unless you've driven down there. I wish I felt comfortable doing Views from automobiles by county, then we'd know which cities to do. Maybe Macon, Georgia as Macon merged with Bibb County. --Mjrmtg (talk) 16:47, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Guess Orlando is next then. I haven't been anywhere near Miami, BTW. --DanTD (talk) 01:10, 9 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Weigh Stations vs. Inspection Stations edit

I was almost ready to split off a new category for one of the Hamilton County, Florida I-75 Weigh Stations, when I discovered that three of the four pictures I was going to split off were actually from one of the Hamilton County I-75 Inspection Stations for things like agricultural and aquacultural cargo. It seems like the only states for these "Inspection Stations" are Florida and California. So do you think there's enough of a call to split the "Inspection Stations" on a separate category, or aren't there enough of them right now? ----DanTD (talk) 04:11, 2 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Go ahead and split off the "Inspection Stations", I think it would be good for them to have their own category. --Mjrmtg (talk) 23:29, 2 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Category:Knights Inn edit

Hi there. You created this category in 2014, and I noticed the description has been truncated since it was created. I'm not sure what the intended conclusion of the final sentence is (I assume something like "...uses such themes"), so I figured I'd ask you to complete it. Thanks. Thanks for the catch. I completed the sentence. --Mjrmtg (talk) 15:54, 20 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

User:Tyler ser Noche's Florida sign and road pics edit

Tyler ser Noche left us a lot of supposed "Signs in Florida" pictures that should be moved to the appropriate categories. I did a lot with Category:Interstate 95 in Florida, but I think I'll leave the rest to you. ----DanTD (talk) 17:32, 1 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've been working on the Georgia photos the past several days. I'll do the Florida ones next. --Mjrmtg (talk) 19:07, 1 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Views from automobiles in Georgia and Florida revisited edit

Remember that discussion we had on the excessive number of pics in the Views from automobiles in Georgia and Views from automobiles in Florida categories, where you said you wish we could split them off by county? Well DanielPenfield has been doing just that for my home state of New York, so it's a safe bet that we can. ----DanTD (talk) 18:02, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

I'll do Georgia, I've copied his templates and created Category:Views from automobiles in Orange County, Florida for a starter in Florida. --Mjrmtg (talk) 20:15, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
Are there any big cities in Florida that span multiple counties? I already have a photo that I've added Category:Views from automobiles in Atlanta, Georgia and Category:Views from automobiles in Fulton County, Georgia to. Would you do the same thing to a city in Florida? Just asking if you've encountered such and if I'm approaching this correctly. --Mjrmtg (talk) 21:01, 31 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
I can't think of any cities in Florida that span more than one county, honestly. Tampa is exclusively in Hillsborough County, St. Petersburg and Clearwater are exclusively in Pinellas County, Orlando is exclusively in Orange County, Tallahassee is exclusively in Leon County, and so on, and so forth. Duval and Miami-Dade will be dominated by Jacksonville and Miami, respectively, but there will be images from outside of these city limits that can fill those. ----DanTD (talk) 15:34, 1 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
