Category descriptions

edit

Hello Petrus!

I appreciate your work on medical topics.

You have recently created this category. Can you write a short category description for this category and other categories you have created (per COM:CAT). Would be great! Thanks in advance. Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 10:05, 28 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dear High Contrast, I would like to satisfy your desire, but do not know how – it seems to me the names of the categories I created are highly specific, unambiguous and a description like Anterior chest auscultation is auscultation of the anterior chest is not beneficial, in my opinion. Besides, I am able to create an English category name according to a Wikipedia article or Google search, but do not master the language enough to write longer mistake-free descriptions – yes, with Commons in my language or Esperanto it would be much easier.
That is why, if you speak English well, I would be indebted to you for doing such description where appropriate.
Best regards, --Petrus Adamus (talk) 10:32, 28 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
The description are intended to be written in different languages. You can write category descriptions in any language. That helps people that do not understand english properly to find their way in Commons: use {{cs|vložte text}}. Thank you. Regards, High Contrast (talk) 10:43, 28 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Portuguese namespace

edit

Answer to User talk: Zeorymer – Category names:
Petrus, I appreciate your good intentions, but this issue was discussed already in a Commons:topics for discussion wherein a consensus was reached that this form was a compromise between existing editors in the Portuguese namespace. A complete translation of all building names was seen as problematic, since it would only perpetuate conflicts. Literal translation of all churches, chapels, cathedrals, etc. would further create unreasonable and confusing translations of that would be lost on the general public who, visiting those sites, would not have access to English-translations. So, with some exceptions (per Commons:Language policy) Portuguese building names would be completed in the format I have begun using. It is a compromise for the purists who want all-Portuguese-all-the-time, and confusing all-English translations. Ruben JC (Zeorymer) (talk) 20:34, 26 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

What a nice way to make Commons absolutely unusable for non-speakers of English, who aren't able to distinguish the languages. --Petrus Adamus (talk) 15:13, 27 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Next comment on User talk: Zeorymer – Category names
Petrus, I don't appreciate the tone of your comment. But, I have converted the name to a pure-English translation on the pre-text of keeping this conversation civilized. I invite you to post this issue under topics for discussion, and address the schema with User:Foroa (an administrator) who has enough experience with this theme. I will cease editing until this has been addressed. I note, this is not an issue of a personal slant to categorization: there are strong proponents of naming on both sides of this debate, in this namespace. You wrote the topic had been discussed somewhere, in a “Commons:topics for discussion”. Could you please put here a link to the discussion? I would like to take a look at it but cannot find the page. --Petrus Adamus (talk) 11:24, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The original proposal and discussion can be found at Commons:Categories_for_discussion/2011/10#Category:Cathedrals_in_Portugal. Ruben JC (Zeorymer) (talk) 15:19, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, the discussion isn't very conclusive, I tried to add a contribution there and after three days of inactivity to Commons talk:Naming categories – Mixing languages in category titles. --Petrus Adamus (talk) 19:42, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Petrus, I insist that you consult User:Foroa. As an administrator, he was involved in the earliest discussions on naming categories and the recent debate. He may better respond to your concerns and explain the history of this issue. Ruben JC (Zeorymer) (talk) 20:16, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Clarification

edit

Hi Petrus. I just want to clarify something. I was organizing Category:Iran and moving files to sub categories that I saw your image and nominated it for deletion. I didn't check your uploads and never will do that although you are free to do that. I just want to make you sure that I don't have personal problems with anyone including you. I really like to make friends everywhere including here. (I do not mean to withdraw your deletion request by this message) Regards AMERICOPHILE 19:51, 3 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

During my visit of Iran, I became convinced it's one of the (many) countries, where some laws are very strict, but their implementation and enforcing is quite disregarded. As concerns the copyright laws, I saw big shops with home-copied American commercial software, obviously neglected by the administration. I don't want to say we should violate laws here on Commons, just that various nations have different mentality and their laws are adjusted for that. So, in some states, prescriptions are moderate but strictly observed, in others, laws are understood more loosely and therefore the legislators create them very strict to achieve the desired conditions. For instance, in my country, there are often placed traffic signs with speed limitation 20 or 30 km/h to make the car drivers slow down at least to 50 km/h. And observing just the letter of the laws, instead of their spirit, we would be forced to remove considerable part of useful content here on Commons, just for theoretical possibility of infringement on somebody's eventual copyright titles.
That's why I nominated one of your pictures, just to show, that big part of photos from Iran would have to be deleted to fulfill the letter of the law mentioned. I also don't bear any personal grudge against you. --Petrus Adamus (talk) 20:26, 3 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
