Why is my file deleted?

There is some public domain data I would like to render. I am looking for advice on the best package to use to generate images. I saw you uploaded File:Wikiguides UserUsertalk edits.png. Can you tell me anything about the package used for this image, or where I would find out more information about it?

Turtles

Hi Philippe, I was wondering about your graph of "turtles" v controls. I'm assuming that as the red line goes negative this relate to net change in edits, but a scale would be useful, also did you mean turtles? WereSpielChequers (talk) 06:13, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

HI WereSpielChequers... which graph did you mean? And yes, I meant turtles... it's a project name. It's about... protecting the new and young from being attacked; much like baby sea turtles need protection from hawks. Bad metaphor but easier than saying "guided users" all the time. Hi Philippe, it was File:Wikiguides Mainspace edits.png. I'm assuming that the vertical axis is net change in undeleted edits as the red line actually goes negative. The horizontal axis is unmarked but clearly time related, a scale would be nice as I'm curious to know the point when newbie edits go negative, I'm expecting that it would be in the first 24 hours if speedy deletion related or around day 8. Hi - that particular file is not one that's really ready for prime time; I should delete it. But to answer the questions... the vertical axis represents number of undeleted edits in the mainspace. The horizontal axis is days of study, but this file has a problem in that it represents multiple cohorts (that's what the spikes are... entry of new users into the program, before their rapid drop off in activity). A better representation each cohort compared to each other by study day, which I'm putting together now. So because of the nasty nature of this graph, it's hard to say what the negatives are - however, because i have the raw data, I can tell you that.... they're not really negatives. It's an artifact of the fact that the graph is "smoothing" the data points in an attempt to demonstrate that the data is fuzzy. The file at File:Wikiguides_Cohort_2_by_study_day.png is one that I find really striking. It's number of edits for one cohort (control and study group) by date of study. In this case, they were introduced on day 0 (which is day three of their account existence), and as you can see, that's really far too late.

However, this one: File:Userusertalk_difference.png is my favorite slide. This represents the difference in edits between control and variable groups, in the user and usertalk namespaces. Anything below the 0 line means that the control edited more and anything above the 0 means that the study group edited more. From this, we can see that the control group is spending MUCH more time in the user and user talk namespaces than the study group! Combined with the fact that the study group is also editing the mainspace more, I think it's exciting.

OK that makes sense, but though you may not think it ready for prime time, I found it in use in the signpost.... The second one shows red and blue almost identical with orange flatlining, in this case are red and blue two batches of turtles and orange the control? The third strikes me as a predominately negative pattern with a pronounced spike into positive at the end, but I think it would be good to look at positive v negative encounters. I'd anticipate that it takes multiple positive encounters to offset a negative one. BTW I agree that early intervention is key, but I'm not sure how you incubate without it being perceived as rejection, hence my preference for rescue in mainspace as the Article Rescue Squadron tries to do. Thanks. As to whether the focus is primarily on encyclopedia articles or not, I've got no official opinion (of course, I have a personal one). But the fact of the matter is that it appeared that people seemed to think that there was no Commons BLP guidance: there may not be, but there is guidance from the hosting provider (WMF) on that. MyUploads gadget

Your making the MyUploads gadget enabled by default broke all JavaScript on Commons, and consequently broke UploadWizard and many other things. I've fixed the issue for now by undoing all of your changes to MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition, but I didn't address the root cause, MyUploads is still broken.

Before you enable a gadget by default on the entire site, please test it first. The edit history of Gadgets-definition very strongly suggests you didn't do this. --Catrope (talk) 19:49, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

DMCA takedown reports

Hi Philippe,

I was just wondering, are we publish yearly summaries or something of 'take down' requests and similar actions? Perhaps we could have something like Google's Transparency Report. Would be nice I think. TheDJ (talk) 21:23, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi - it's a great question, and one we were discussing this morning. We're looking into the ability to create a snapshot "at a glance" report of that type. In the meantime, all the reports that we take action upon are at wmf:Category:DMCA, but obviously the ones that we decline aren't. We're figuring out what the best way is to surface and report that information. I hope that we'll have something on this fairly soon. Philippe (WMF) (talk) 21:28, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
