English Wikiquote comment

I saw that you recently set up q:User talk:Willscrlt. The box you set up suggests that people contact you on one of the other wikis you frequent (which is what I'm doing now). However, that isn't especially convenient, and it doesn't make much sense to jump to another project just to discuss Wikiquote. Instead, you can set your preferences to get an email whenever someone leaves you a talk page message (User Profile -> E-mail -> E-mail me when my user talk page is changed). Hi. I agree it is not convenient for people to have to visit a different project to leave me a message. I do state that they can leave a message on the project, but if someone expects a timely response, they need to leave the comment on a site I actually frequent. I think that compared to other English Wikipedians, regularly monitoring talk pages on four different projects (en.wiki, commons, meta, and en.books) is considerably more conscientious than most. I maintain talk and user pages on about 20 different projects, including in 7 languages for Wikipedia. That would be a lot of different pages to monitor, and some of the projects have the e-mail notification disabled due to server loads. I try to use cross-wiki compatible templates as much as possible, so it would be a pain to customize my messages more than I already do. Is it an ideal solution? No. But it has worked pretty well for the past year or two that I have done so. Sometimes people respond locally, and eventually I see the message, and sometimes they respond on one of my frequented projects (usually for things that need to be addressed more quickly). I hope that helps explain why I have things setup the way I do.

Wikiquote is one of the newer (for me) projects I have started testing in. While I have used it as a resource for a long time, I haven't really edited there. If there are some local policies or guidelines I am ignoring, I will adapt accordingly. I try never to be disruptive, but every project has a slightly different take on what is and isn't disruptive. Hey, don't get me wrong; I'm not saying that your attitude is wrong, I just wanted to let you know of a nifty feature that you may or may not have been aware of. :)
And trust me, I feel your pain when it comes to checking multiple talk pages. I've got a sysop or 'crat flag on six projects, and am reasonably active on a couple more; I understand that it can take a fair amount of time just to check everywhere. EVula // talk // ☯ // 16:36, 18 December 2008 (UTC)
