Transfering files

How do I know when I my file is ready to be transfered to our article in Wikipedia and How do you do that?

Lorena Garbarino Office of Dr. Miguel Delgado — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr. Delgado (talk • contribs) 23:47, 30. August 2011 (UTC)

After you uploaded a file, you can find it in Special:MyUploads. If it is there everything went right and you can use it in wikipedia by inserting into your article text. But I recommend reading en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial -- RE rillke questions? 14:05, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Do Creative Commons pics require showing license terms?

On the page of this photo, there is a Creative Commons box that lists conditions for sharing--nothing here is said about showing the work's license terms: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ludwig_von_Mises.jpg

However, when you click the box's " Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported" link, you go to a page that says at the bottom: "Notice — For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page."

Now, does this apply to simply using a CC pic on a website? So that, for example, if someone has a pic with an article, the pic's caption must include a link to the Creative Commons web page? —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.183.195.233 (talk) 01:42, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes. You can place it wherever you place the photo credits. See the section 4 of the actual license for the details (on the CC summary page, click the link labeled "legal code"). -- Asclepias (talk) 02:57, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

My pictures

I took a picture on Thailand Highway 23 heading west from from Ubon to Yasothon, of Yasothon's Welcome sign. Both highway and sign are much lees than 150 years old, the sign being less than five. I'd like to upload the welcome sign for the Yasothon Province article. The sign is in Thai and English and directs tourists' attention to three destinations of which Yasothon is exceptionallp proud, as evidenced by their erection of a huge sign over a six-lane highway. I fear my effort at adding it to their Wikipedia english article would be for naught -- except that it is costing me both time and money. So far, I have gotten away with a picture of Yasothon City Hall, even though it -- and the town -- are less than 150 years old. --Pawyilee (talk) 10:37, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Based on Commons:FOP#Thailand, it seems that your photos of the sign and of the city hall should both be fine. --Avenue (talk) 21:38, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

Rename a file

I uploaded a fixed version of the Extinction_Intensity.png My version is called Extinction_Intensity_fix.png Could you replace the original Extinction_Intensity.png with the Extinction_Intensity_fix.png  ? My version simply reoriented the x axis so time ran left to right instead of right to left. As i'm a new user, i can't do this yet. much appreciated.

Changing Picture Licence

Hi. How do I change a licence of a picture I uploaded? Sas1998 (talk) 09:12, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

First of all: Why your photos are that small in size? Are they from a website? If not it would be really kind if you upload the full resolution. Thanks.
Go to the image description page and click edit. Then add a copyright tag. I reccomend using GFDL. A list of your files is here. Sincerely -- RE rillke questions? 09:51, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. They are from my website, and I did take them. I uploaded them onto my website, but then my computer memory broke, so all the files in a larger size got lost.

The box that says that my picture doesn't have the sufficient copyright, etc. is still there, even though I added the copyright tag. What do I do? Thanks Sas1998 (talk) 10:28, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

You can ignore or delete them from your talk page. Are you sure you don't have a higher resolution of File:Gemsstock1.jpg ? -- RE rillke questions? 10:44, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. I am quite sure I don't have a higher resolution of the pictures. Sorry. I will search hard to see if I can find them over the next few days though. Sas1998 (talk) 10:53, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Are you seilbahn.tk.111.com / have you ever heared of them? The problem is, this image is published in a higher resolution in a forum. Are you ATV? -- RE rillke questions? 10:56, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

My website is www.andermattgallery.kk5.org . Sas1998 (talk) 12:09, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Ok, then the forum has stolen the image. You have an 800px version here. -- RE rillke questions? 12:43, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you Sas1998 (talk) 13:26, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Well, the 800×600px version also exists here as part of a whole set, which was also posted here on 2008-04-13 (with the image being hosted indeed at seilbahn.tk.111.com, and the forum post directing readers to www.stahlseil.ch for more images). I'm sorry, but to me it's rather unclear who copied from whom here. www.stahlseil.ch claims copyright. Lupo 10:44, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
Indeed, while the first upload has complete Exif, the second one is smaller in size and has no exif. -- RE rillke questions? 08:23, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Okay. It could just be that we took pictures that are very very similar. I think the file should be deleted to avoid any confusion, etc. How can I delete it? Sas1998 (talk) 11:09, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

If you have JavaScript enabled, click on "Nominate for deletion" in your toolbar on the left side. -- RE rillke questions? 13:19, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. I have tried that but it just comes up with an error message, which says I can put a delete template in, but it doesn't work. Sas1998 (talk) 13:40, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

I try it. What was the error-message? -- RE rillke questions? 13:44, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Licensing an image generated by a myriad of scientific applications?

Does this image (link is to the UMass chemistry dept. wiki) count as 'user generated'? The peptide was minimized using W:Avogadro (software), binary potential maps were generated using W:DelPhi (software), and finally was rendered in W:UCSF Chimera. Am I considered the author of the image so long as I credit the applications used to generate the figure? And if so how should I go about licensing it? I was hoping to use it for the DelPhi wikipedia article. Thanks in advance for your replies. I(q) = User(q)·Talk(q) 20:04, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Anton Otto Fischer painting

I need to get the correct license on File:Chase of the Constitution, July 1812.jpg. Fischer died in 1962 so +70 would not be correct. The photo of this painting is PD because it was taken by the US Navy but so far I cannot determine the copyright of the painting. The painting was donated to the US Navy art collection and I don't know if that automatically makes the painting PD or not. I also cannot determine what year the painting was done. I've searched around on google to no avail. Brad (talk) 23:41, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

It wouldn't be PD if they just donated the painting. Even if they donated the copyright, the US Government can hold copyrights given to it. It's unlikely this is PD.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:04, 3 September 2011 (UTC)
Then the only thing left is to determine the date of the painting. I found a listing of ten paintings but none of those are the one in question. Brad (talk) 01:39, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Trouble with a template - ID number needs a space

I have created this template TNA-image-link for linking to document records in the the National Archives (UK) in the template TNA-image, and I have it working with a small kludge. The document record identifier officially has a space in it (WO 106/1590), but I can't get the code to work with a space. The database will accept the search parameter without the space (WO106/1590), but it's awkward to tell users to copy the record identifier and remove the space. Is there some trick I haven't thought of? - PKM (talk) 06:30, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately we have no string parser functions activated. They could be so useful. We should think about filing a feature-request on bugzilla:.
The only solution, I can see is 2 params: either two times the full identifier (with and without space) or separating the letters from numbers. But I am not an expert. -- RE rillke questions? 11:26, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Old Press Photos on Ebay

Hello,

I just found out that tons of old and historic press photos are available for auction on ebay. Most of them offer full sized preview of the images. Many are sold by a private company, Historic Images which actually put watermarks on each photo. But even if this company is selling the images, they are still acceptable on Commons right? I mean, most of them were taken 60 years ago, and their copyright has long since expired.

Links:

Finemann (talk) 21:41, 3 September 2011 (UTC)

Generally 70 years after the author's decease, the images are in PD, AFAIK. But there are a few exceptions.
A photo of a 2-d item is often not covered by copyright but the 2-d item might be and then the photo is unfree, too.
A watermark can be protected by copyright law.

C. D. Freydanck died in 1887, so this picture showing the Anhalter Tor in Berlin must be avaliable under PD-old. It's a "safe" picture.

patented diamond design

I am working on behalf of ADR Diamonds, who hold the patent on the Passion Cut diamond. They have published the diamond design on their website at http://www.passion-cut.com/main.asp?cat=site&sel_nav1=11#3. I'd like to upload the image (in cleaner black-and-white) onto the Passion Cut section of the Round Brilliant Wikipedia page. I see that someone else has uploaded a similar image on that page. I know that ADR is fine with the image being displayed publicly and being shared, but I also know that since they own the patent, they wouldn't want someone to actually make this particular diamond cut. Image distribution - no problem. Making a live version of the diamond - not allowed. So, can I upload the image? It fits with the information in the article because it shows how the cut differs from the Ideal and Hearts and Arrows. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Norreida (talk • contribs) 22:06, 15 August 2011 (UTC)

We don't seem to have such file hosted here. A photo from 1970–1985 would still be protected by copyright, so we could only host that if the author agreed to publish it under a free license. Since digital cameras and free licenses weren't really around in those days, the chances of finding such a photo seem pretty slim. It might help if you mention which city you're talking about. Here is what the file description of Lyapunovspace.jpg looked like in edit mode right after you uploaded it. I'm guessing you didn't add any categories when you uploaded it, so the template Uncategorized got added to it automatically. When you later added a category, you didn't remove that template. The bot that notified you about uncategorised files on your talk page will notify you of anything still tagged with the Uncategorized template. LX (talk, contribs) 17:56, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer, that is the reason, why this happened. But when I later add a category, for example for the Zirconzity.jpg, the message "This media file is uncategorized" in the yellow window on this file page should disappear, but it did not. So, thank you.
Like explained above, when you added a category, you forgot to remove the "Uncategorized" template. The removal of the template from the description page of File:Zirconzity.jpg is left to you as an exercise.   (By the way, I don't know why you manually added the obsolete template "ImageUpload" to your files, but it should be removed too.) -- Asclepias (talk) 18:29, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

New article on the Segovia Mint in Spain.

I am a person, Glenn Murray, trying to create a new page about the Segovia Mint Monument in Segovia, Spain. The user name I filed is "Segovia Mint" but I am not "writing an article about myself". This is a historic monument building, not described in Wikipedia, and worthy of an encyclopedic article. I think my start-up was errased. Thanks! -unsigned

I would suggest that you take this up somewhere on Wikipedia (this is the Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia). Assuming from the language of your question you mean the English-language Wikipedia, that would be http://en.wikipedia.org.
Does anyone have a specific suggestion for Glenn as to on what en-wiki page he might take this up? - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
By the way, there is no evidence that anyone ever tried to create an article at en:Segovia Mint, en:Segovia mint, en:Casa de Moneda, Segovia, or en:Casa de Moneda (Segovia), the four places I can imagine such an article belonging, so perhaps you started the article in the wrong place and that is why it was deleted. One of these should be the location of the article, and the others should be redirects. - Jmabel ! talk 15:32, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
From what I can see I'm guessing the edit filter tried to convince you not to post this page to begin with since its title matched your username, I don't see any contributions attached to the Segovia Mint account. That's just as well because you will not be able to use that username on en.Wikipedia. I suggest you abandon the Segovia Mint username, pick a new name that does not represent an organization and go right ahead and write the article. How to use talk?

I have received messages on username:talk warning me of problems, but I have no idea how to reply to ask for more precise info. How does talk work? Specifically, how do I reply to a message from an admin? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joneall (talk • contribs) 07:44, 7. Sep. 2011 (UTC)

Welcome, Joneall! At first I recommend reading COM:TALK. You should reply on different locations, depending on the warning. I case of a deletion-request (Image deletion warning), there is a link in the notification left on your talk-page. If the image has no license, source or permission or "untagged", go to the file-description page and click on "talk". State there, why this image has sufficient information.
If you have questions, ask the one who left the template on your talk-page if it isn't a bot. There is a signature under each notification. Just click on it. If you are on the user-page, click on talk. Then, you will probably see a warning that the user wishes to continue discussions where they were started. Place a Joneall along with your signature (~~~~) on this page by clicking "add new section" and reply on your own talk-page.
You can create pages "in your user-namespace" to manage your uploads etc. For example User:Joneall/gallery. -- RE rillke questions? 11:16, 7 September 2011 (UTC)
To clarify what Rillke said: unless the comment came from a bot, respond right where you were addressed, sign with ~~~~ which will be auto-magically changed into a signature and timestamp, and place Joneall along with your signature (~~~~) on the talk page of the user who contacted you. - Jmabel ! talk 16:46, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Classic car help needed

Would someone who knows classic cars please follow up on the comment at Category talk:Cord Beverly and do whatever should be done? I know only what the owner of the vehicle I photographed told me, and my descriptions in the photos followed that. I suspect that both the categorization on each photo & the caption should be changed (or not, if this anonymous commenter is mistaken) and quite possibly the categories need to be reorganized. - Jmabel ! talk 16:43, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Public domain

Is it acceptable to use CC0? Scrawler (talk) 11:40, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

I'd say yes, it's acceptable, but it's a bit redundant. CC0 and PD-self are two slightly differently worded ways of placing a work into the public domain (or equivalent), so I don't know why you would want to use both at the same time. Normally you would choose one or the other. LX (talk, contribs) 13:32, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

How to upload an image of myself

Hi there,

I would like to upload an image of myself for use on my Wikipedia entry. The image was taken by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), and is posted online at http://www.iau.org/public_press/images/detail/ga09139/

I tried posting this image previously but it was rejected by someone as not being my own work. May fault.

According to the IAU's copyright page at http://www.iau.org/copyright/ the image can be released under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported license, as long as I credit the IAU for the photo.

Does that license indeed allow me to post this image on Wikipedia, and if so, can you please point me to instructions on how, specifically, I should do this to ensure the proper credit is given?

Thanks!

James Bell (astronomer, b. 1965)

Sure, it's fine. Apparently, there was only a misunderstanding because the original indications about the source were perhaps incomplete or confusing, and you had not responded to the message for clarification after one week. You can ask the undeletion of the file on the page Commons:Undeletion requests. Just make sure you credit the author and/or copyright holder and that you mention the above links on the file's description page, so that anyone can verify the source and the license. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:33, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Deletion etiquette

I recently nominated File:One eskimO.jpg for deletion (along with File:Oegravy.jpg), because it seemed like a clear copyright violation; see Commons:Deletion requests/File:One eskimO.jpg. As it turned out, the uploader really was the copyright holder and provided evidence of permission through OTRS. So the deletion request was quickly closed as a keep. However, now I think that the image is too promotional for the Commons: it instructs the reader to "like" the production company on Facebook and to visit their Web page. (I didn't mention this in my original deletion nomination, because at the time I thought the apparent copyright problem was all I needed to say.)

Based on the uploader's comments in the deletion nominations, and the fact that he or she opened a deletion request for my deletion request, I think he or she is frustrated with the deletion nominations I opened, and might feel that I am opposing him or her personally. I don't want to appear to be badgering the uploader. So, first I want to see whether other people agree that File:One eskimO.jpg is overly promotional. If so, is it proper for me to undo the closing of Commons:Deletion requests/File:One eskimO.jpg and add a new reason for its deletion, or should I open a new deletion request, or should I wait a while before re-nominating this image for deletion, or what? —Bkell (talk) 00:39, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Comment: A cropped version already exists in File:Oegravy.jpg. I re-nominated File:One eskimO.jpg for deletion based on the no advertising requirements for Commons images. Warfieldian (talk) 16:21, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Uploading from Flickr

I copied a number images from an old Russian book and uploaded them to my Flickr page. I think there are about 60 images. Is there a way to upload them to Commons together, or do they need to be uploaded one at a time? You can make a request at COM:FBATCH but Flickr only offers Creative Commons licensing and these would all be under public domain. You could do a batch upload and then go back and change the license to PD-RusEmpire. Warfieldian (talk) 18:19, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

CC-BY!?

I uploaded File:Phpqrlinks.png here with (public domain) tag. But when I use it on Wikipedia and export as PDF it said my work is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution! Why!? Scrawler (talk)

First, please do not subst: the tlp-template. I am not sure what you expect when using 4 different license-templates. Software has to decide and it took one of your specified ones, cc-by-3.0. I recommend removing the cc-by-sa-3.0|cc-by-3.0 and one of the PD-licenses. -- RE rillke questions? 15:54, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
Well, when a work is released to the public domain or the equivalent with CC-0 or PD-self, it does not seem logical to claim CC-by and CC-by-sa licenses on it. Or are you just trying to test the system's response to that? From the four different tags you used, I don't know why the system chose the CC-by, but I guess it can make sense as being the least illogical conclusion that could be drawn from the apparently confusing combination of the four tags. The presence of the incompatible licenses could be interpreted as meaning that you did not really want to release your work under CC-0 and PD-self, consequently the CC-0 and PD-self tags should be ignored, and then it leaves the CC-by and the CC-by-sa licenses, of which the CC-by, being less restrictive, makes the mention of the CC-by-sa not really useful. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:19, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
These four tags () means "This image is in the public domain, but attribution and share-alike are appreciated" Burstling Miraculous Power (talk) 23:56, 10 September 2011 (UTC)
That may be what the user was trying to convey, but that's not what people are getting from it. If you want to say that, write it in English, or at the very least include one of CC-zero and PD-self and CC-BY-SA.--Prosfilaes (talk) 06:06, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

copyrights of images in the background

I took pictures of a band that was playing in front of a large poster. I posted the picture on Wikipedia. Does that violate the copyright of the poster in the background? I didn’t think about it until I started playing with the image and in the second picture, made one band member look like he was in the poster. Should I have these images removed from Wikipedia Commons? If I should remove them, how do I have them removed? Thanks for your help.173.70.113.3 04:33, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Not a problem. See Commons:De minimis for details. What are your pictures? But if you want to remove them, add Copyvioonto every file description page of files that you want to remove. Burstling Miraculous Power (talk) 09:16, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

That helps. Most of the pictures are fine by those criteria. The one I was concerned about is probably not. I will remove it now. Thanks.173.70.113.3 15:19, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Also, you can add a Gaussian blur to the copyrighted portion of an image. See File:Georgetown Rainier malt house interior 01 - blurred.jpg for an example where I did this. If you look at the image full-scale, you'll see that the paintings on the wall are barely more discernible than in a thumbnail, rendering them de minimis. - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Here are four images I recently loaded:

 1. Image:Milan Missouri downtown.jpg
 2. Image:Sullivan County Missouri courthouse.jpg
 3. Image:Milan Missouri history marker.jpg
 4. Image:Princeton Missouri sign.jpg

I always select the Public Domain license when I upload my images them to Wikimédia Commons. (I detest the language and inferences of your CreativeCommons licenses and will not assign them to anything I upload.) Since the upload process is « automated » by your wizard, I am certain this error is caused when I selected the Public Domain license. Your staff will probably want to fix this UploadWizard problem so it does not continue.

Also, when I uploaded my images, the Category assignment function appears « hidden » behind some kind of « More Options » link or drop down list (or something) according to a message I just received from the CategorizationBot. --- Here is a TIP: If you want uploaders to Wikimédia Commons to categorize their images, please make this function part of the UploadWizard's main series of steps for uploading images. a photograph uploaded a picture of me on my wikepedia page which I dislike. I wish to upload another photo of myself that is to my liking. The choice of the contents of a Wikipedia article (text, photos) is an editorial decision that must be discussed with the editors at the Wikipedia project in question, not on the Wikimedia Commons. We can't help you if you don't give us at least a small hint of what you have "tried and tried" and where. I didn't find any uploads or changes of images by User:Bennrush at Wikimedia Commons or by User:Bennrush at en.wikipedia. If what you're trying to say is that you can't upload a file with the "upload wizard" form, then you can try uploading with a more user-friendly form. But in any case, the photo must be under a free license specified by the copyright holder. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:08, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
First, I should point out that you have no right to have the picture replaced, just because you don't like it. But in general, that should not be a problem. If you (or anyone else) uploads another, preferably better, picture of you, and goes through the tedious but legally necessary copyright-related form-filling, then you (or anyone else) can use it to replace the picture you don't like. I admit that the form-filling is not easy, I would appreciate it myself if it could be made easier. I know that effort has been put into this, but with limited success. Maproom (talk) 22:52, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
Since no one else has said it, please note that if you upload a photo of yourself, it must be one that you took yourself, for example using your camera's self-timer feature or by using a mirror or holding the camera at arm's length. If someone else took it they have to submit a release through our OTRS process, and this is enough of a hassle that it's easier just to take a new picture of yourself. Dcoetzee (talk) 23:43, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Another option (for a photo taken by someone else) is to have the photographer upload it themselves. --Avenue (talk) 00:36, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

File Name to URL Conversion.

I would like to request some information about how file names (e.g. File:xyz.jpg) are converted to URLs. I know that an md5sum is created and the first and then the first two characters of that checksum is used as a directory name. So, xyz.jpg has a md5sum of f522659caf8163c23899f551c5f70a4e, which means the file is in /f/f5/xyz.jpg. But I still haven't figured out what determines the link structure *before* that (the upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/ part). The following points are still unclear:

 1. Is there any other hostname used for uploads besides upload.wikimedia.org or is it the sole hostname for ALL Wikimedia/Wikipedia/Wiktionary/... projects?
 2. What determines whether /wikipedia/commons/ or wikipedia/en/ is used? And is there any other path used for uploads? What happens if the uploaded file isn't related to (or hasn't been uploaded with) Wikipedia, but, say, the Turkish Wiktionary? Or the German Wikibooks? Or Wikispecies? And how can you get that information from the file name?

Thank you. Jack1021 (talk) 21:49, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

The format is upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/projectname/language/. Emufarmers (talk) 23:50, 16 September 2011 (UTC)
Is the slash between projectname and language an actual slash or did you mean “projectname OR language”? Because I have never seen /wikipedia/commons/en/f/f5/xyz.jpg. And I'd still be interested in an answer to the rest of my questions. Jack1021 (talk) 07:44, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
The slashes are there. Commons happens not to have different language editions, so it doesn't have a language marked in the path. You can figure out the upload path for a project by checking Special:FileList on it (or you can dig through the configuration files): the Turkish Wiktionary is upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/wiktionary/tr/ and Wikispecies is upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/species/. The German Wikibooks is upload.wikimedia.org/wikibooks/de/; I'm sure other exciting inconsistencies await you. Emufarmers (talk) 17:12, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

How do I change a template into a proper licence on the file page of a Wikimedia Commons image?

Image protection

I am a Wikipedia user who is trying to use some images from here: http://encyclopedia.mitrasites.com/ Can anyone tell me if these are protected in any way? I have no idea. File:Frog.jpg

About File:Frog.jpg. I think a new user accidentally uploaded an image over the top of an existing image. I would like to revert (to Fir0002's version) but it has been 8 months with the current (not so good) image that is used in Wikipedias a lot. I need a second opinion on what to do.--Commander Keane (talk) 04:52, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Revert. The description of the image and the author credit correspond to Fir0002's image. Also, Fir0002's image was already in the projects pages before the change, so reverting will only restore things as they were intended. -- Asclepias (talk) 05:47, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia's SVG to PNG convertor messing up the colors

It seems like wikimedia's SVG to PNG convertor is experiencing some issues. It is converting certain colors on a background to black. See:

The rectangular boxes on the far right hand side should not be black. Here is what the original uploaded SVG image looks like: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c3/GoogleFileSystemGFS.svg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saqibali (talk • contribs) 16:29, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

SVG problems usually get the best attention at Commons:Graphics village pump. Do note, however, that it's very difficult to analyse SVGs consisting of 150,000 characters on a single line. LX (talk, contribs) 17:04, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

Creating a category?

Hi, I'd like there to be a category for images of Sportsman's Park. Is there somewhere to request that one be made, or if I just create a page called "Category:Sportsman's Park", would it work as a category? Thanks. Delaywaves talk 02:44, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Click on this link: Category:Sportman's Park and add categories to the page (like location, type of venue). Put images in the category by adding at the bottom (this will also create the red link for easily creating categories). Hope that helps. -- Deadstar (msg) 13:15, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
It does, thanks. All I really needed to know was whether creating a page with that title would automatically function as a category. Thanks. Delaywaves talk 00:29, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Can I upload photos from Saudi Arabia

I think Saudi Arabia banned of using camers in public places. It also has many other rules. I dont know all of those. Anyway I am not going to do these things. I just wanna take photos of machines from my company and I want upload it into Wiki to write articles. Is there any issues for me to do this from Saudi Arabia. --Inbamkumar86 (talk) 19:06, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

There wouldn't be any issues from our side (assuming the photos are in Commons' scope). If you might be violating the law of the country you are in by taking the photos, that would be an issue between you and that country, but would not concern Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 03:46, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

How to put media files into categories?

How do I put my Jpeg photos into katagories ? Wiki Commons already have the photos, I have to put them into katagorories afterwards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bo Forslind (talk • contribs) 15:01, 21 September 2011 (UTC) (UTC)

Hej Bo! How to upload, and permissions

I was given permission to use some images created by the Drents Museum, by worker Vincent van Vilsteren. The images that I wanted to use are listed below, and are of mummies, known as bog bodies. Unfortunatly I do not know how to upload them or what liscence to use.

Thank You
--Gourami Watcher (talk) 16:39, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

These may have copyright issues, and if so would require OTRS as well as the technical process of uploading. Unfortunately your assertion of permission from an employee of the museum won't fly: he doesn't necessarily even know the copyright status of the images (e.g. who was the photographer and whether this was work for hire, etc.).
As for technically uploading: download the images to your own computer using your browser's usual means of saving images. Then use any of the several means to upload them (e.g. Special:Upload). - Jmabel ! talk 17:11, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Roberto221 (talk) 23:43, 24 September 2011 (UTC) Roberto221

You need to create a page in the "Template" namespace on the wiki where you want to use the image (presumably, on the English Wikipedia). Your best bet is to find another template that does what you want to do and copy it. If you really need help, try the English Wikipedia help desk, who will be more versed in the local style and technical details. Powers (talk) 15:41, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Replacing an image

I have an existing image - File:COSMIC NOMADS 2011 .jpg which I am trying to replace with a newer updated image. I have tried to load the new image as a new File but it will not upload via the upload wizard. The image is in jpg format at 465 KB and as the replacement image it will not load. Is there a reason for this - has my loading privilege been blocked for some reason? Griffo man (talk) 12:07, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

convenience link: File:COSMIC NOMADS 2011 .jpg.
At a Commons level, you should not be replacing an image with a different image. Simply upload the image under a different name, and Commons will have both images. In Wikipedia, then, you can change the article to use the new image. - Jmabel ! talk 15:01, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Uploading aviation images with infobox

I want to help Wikimedia by uploading some high quality aviation images. How I use Category:Images_with_infobox_aircraft? Specifically, how do I add the infobox to my photo so it would look something like this [6]? --Biggerben (talk) 11:08, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

You could upload the way you would normally upload a file and then edit the file description afterwards. The easiest way, though, would probably be to use Special:Upload and put the Infobox aircraft image in the Description field. You can find documentation for the template at Template:Infobox aircraft image/doc. LX (talk, contribs) 14:08, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi Antoniah! From looking at your upload log, it seems that you have been affected by a current problem with our upload wizard, which causes different files to be uploaded under the same name. For example, if you look at File:Gudmuntorp kyrka.jpg under the File history section, you will see that there are two versions of the file, both uploaded at 20:17 yesterday. This problem has been reported on the Village Pump here and here and as bugzilla:28921. In the meantime, I recommend using Commons:Upload instead. LX (talk, contribs) 14:03, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Photo eligible or not

Are these two photos eligible to be upload? First image and second image. What license could I use?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:35, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Info: The first image has a copied-and-pasted description from the U.S. Library of Congress. On the original version at the LoC, the link to the Rights Advisory is intact. According to that, images by unidentified creators and images from unidentified sources [in this collection] are problematic because of the lack of information. Hello,

I am working for Cinterion Wireless Modules GmbH and need to do some changes on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinterion One of the things is, that I need to change the logo. Can I just upload the new logo and replace the old one?

Thank you! bemabe79

You don't indicate what Commons file this affects. If the new logo is ineligible for copyright, then upload it to Commons under a new file name (not a filename that currently has the old logo), then change the en-wiki article to use the new filename. If it is copyrightable, it can't go on Commons. You'd need to upload it on the English-language Wikipedia (again, under a name that does not conflict with other names either on en-wiki or on Commons) and use their process for indicating why a particular non-free image should be allowed (which is entirely an en-wiki matter, not a Commons matter). - Jmabel ! talk 15:41, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
