Why participate?

Participate in Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest photography competition in the world, and help Wikipedia document monuments and heritage buildings.

Participating is fun! By photographing and sharing images of heritage nearby you, you can explore more about Brazilian heritage and learn about it. It's a nice challenge to improve your photography skills, and you can of course win some nice prizes. There are prizes for the five best pictures; and prizes for the 10 most valuable contributors --the contributors who help us the most fill the content gap on Brazilian heritage. Prizes are all vouchers and of course also eternal glory! The national jury will select up to 10 images that will represent Brazil in the international finale. These images will compete for the international awards. More information about the international competition is available on www.wikilovesmonuments.org .

You can also upload images that you may have taken already during one of your travels to the national competition of that country. Check if your travel destination participates in Wiki Loves Monuments this year.

Competition rules

We try to keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules for photos to participate in the contest in Brazil. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:

  • Self taken and self uploaded;
  • Uploaded during October 2021;
  • During the upload process, you give permission with a <CC BY-SA license to re-use the image;
  • Contain a listed monument, which you have identified using the monument identifier (see elsewhere on this page);

Next to that, there are a few practical rules:

  • You should have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons;
  • If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition;
  • You are responsible for following the law while taking and uploading the photo.

In October, you may upload as many pictures (old or new) as you want of monuments that you have visited. At the end of the month, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the monuments in Brazil to submit to represent in the international finale. The international jury will then announce the international winners in January, 2022.

The Jury

Our jury will process the images through three or four rounds during November. At the end of this process, the jury determines the top-10. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides. Our jury includes:

Judging criteria

The jury will determine the winners of the international contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.

Images that reach a top ranking of the international finale, will typically at least fulfill the technical criteria of the 'Featured Image' process at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit many images, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.

Because of the high number of images we have received the last years, members of the team of the user group Wiki Movimento Brasil will help to preliminarily separate the images. They are: CCosta (WMB), EAzzellini (WMB), JPeschanski (WMB) and MCarrera (WMB).

More about Brazilian monuments

We are considering monuments for this competition every item that is officially recognized as a monument. This recognition --called in Portuguese "tombamento"-- may have happened at the international, national, state or municipal level. Check automated and dynamic lists of monuments here.
