World War 1 memorial at the Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town

Summary edit

Description
English: Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town:
"COMMEMORATION OF AN HONOURABLE TRADITION: When the [N..day] gun was fired from the Lion Battery, Signal Hill, on 14 May 1918, it brought Cape Town to a dead stop for a Two Minute Silence. One minute in "Remembrance of Those Who Died For Their Cause" One minute in "Gratitude" for [Services]. The idea was initiated by Mr [R.R. Dryden] and the mayor of Cape Town, Sir Harry [Han..ds]. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick submitted the suggestion to King George V. The "Two Minute Silence" has been observed since 1919 on 11 November and Remembrance Sunday at 11h00."
The wooden cross on the outer curtain wall was made of wood from the forest at Delville, where many South African soldiers lost their lives in the Battle of Delville Wood. As part of the 9th (Scottish) Division, 1 SA Brigade took part in the Somme offensive and in particular the Battles of Trones Wood, Berfnay Wood, Longueval and Delville Wood, at the beginning of July 1916. The SA Brigade was almost entirely eliminated in these battles, which lasted from 5‑20 July 1916. After the bloody battle, the brigade had 29 officers and 751 troops remaining out of some 4,000 who started the battle. The inscription also reads: "This Cross is made from oak from Delville Wood"
