Das Nein der SPD zur Nachrüstung zeigt: Die frühere Regierung Helmut Schmidt war nicht nur innenpolitisch, sondern auch außenpolitisch am Ende. Das Nein zeigt auch: Die Bildung der neuen Regierung unter Helmut Kohl und die Wahlentscheidung vom 6. März 1984 war historisch notwendig. Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland wäre sonst heute international handlungs- unfähig. Bundeskanzler Helmut Kohl in seiner Regie- rungserklärung vom 21.11.1983: "Wir gehören zum Westen. Das Bündnis für Frieden und Freiheit ist elementarer Bestandteil deutscher Politik. Hier verbinden sich unsere Grundwerte, unsere Lebensform und unsere Sicherheit. Nur ein wehrhaftes und einiges Bündnis kann den Frieden in Freiheit sichern. Das Bündnis dient dem Frieden Europas und der Welt. Es bleibt Grundlage einer Politik der Verständigung mit dem Osten."
