Ну и зеленый можно заменить на более темный.

Kuban flag colors

Hey so is there a source you've got for the colors you uploaded to the Kuban flags? I feel like this should probably be uploaded to an alternate file labeled "alternate colors" or something. NorthTension (talk) 16:19, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello! Those are simply Web-safe colors of raspberry, green, and blue. For some reason I keep seeing pink or purple being used. However, the Cossacks never used pink. Even in songs, it's always some lyrics about a raspberry ensign. – Ιγκόρ (talk) 16:40, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

All the pictures I can find online of people using the banner are using those brighter colors, is this an example of citogenesis? I always use Vexillographia as my source and they use the brighter colors, but since I can't find any contemporary sources or things made before the internet that show it; have you gotten into touch with Viktor Lomantsov, operator of Vexillographia, at all? Exactly. Unfortunately, sharing misleading information here has lead to some misconceptions. Thanks for the word for this, by the way. Apparently, file:Flag_of_Kuban.png is the source of this color mismatch. Years ago somebody published it and now it is all over the net. Could have been worse though: File:Bandera_dels_Cosacs_de_Kuban.svg... I've never heard of the person you mentioned. I went to that webpage and it also says raspberry, though a brighter color is used. Also, file:HeroLaborKuban.png has a quite similar color. – Ιγκόρ (talk) 17:25, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Ah gotcha, Lomantsov and Vexillographia/Heraldicum are probably the best sources for flags and coats of arms/emblems from the former Russian Empire and Soviet Union, but I think you invariably have come across them since he's really prolific. NorthTension (talk) 18:15, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Got a reply back from Mr. Lomantsov:

Issues with shades of colors on old flags are always controversial. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, no one bothered with describing shades according to Pantone. Real old flags or posters would help, but I don’t know about the flags of the Kuban People’s Republic preserved in museums. But I think that the crimson color of the Kuban flag should have corresponded to the crimson color commonly used in the army. The army had its own “palette” - red, light blue, dark green, crimson, etc. Some army and Cossack banners had a crimson color, and as a rule it was a similar shade on both the banners of the early 19th century and the banners of the end century - rich crimson color (the color of ripe raspberries. It was not very bright, a rather muted tone). Of your drawings, No. 1 (EN: I posted three files in the email) is closest to it. The second one is too bright, and the third one is not raspberry, but dark burgundy. Not a picture - some banners: the banner of the rifle regiments, gray. 19th century (with a crimson cross) and a Cossack Ural banner with a crimson border. I think Kuban should be similar. But all these, of course, are purely speculative conclusions...  Everything may be completely wrong.

Ended up getting final confirmation from Lomantsov, I found a "brandbook" from Krasnodar Krai with Pantone specifications that I'm going to be using for the raspberry and green, but for the blue there appears to be two correct options: the blue from the Russian flag (Pantone 286 C) and the blue listed in the brandbook (Pantone 640 U) so I'll just use the former on the regular files and upload the latter as an alternative file tomorrow. Not sure that it's historically accurate to use the specs of a modern polity to represent a historical flag. Anyway, I've started a conversation regarding the colors on the talk page of the flag, so more people would see it. – Ιγκόρ (talk) 06:13, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

It's all we've got, aside from those medals from the civil war there are no drawings nor surviving flags in existence. Modern Kuban Cossacks use the same tricolor as Krasnodar Krai as far as I can tell so unfortunately we're going to have to work backwards. NorthTension (talk) 10:33, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
