Hello, Alexikoua!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Illyrians edit

Hi. I see that you removed this map from en wikipedia: [1]. Your explanation was: "rv wp:or map, Desaratae aren't Illyrian".

I do not know how you concluded that this map represents wp:or. Map page clearly states that it is made according to historical map from this book: Valentin Vasiljevič Sedov, Sloveni u dalekoj prošlosti, Novi Sad, 2012, page 172. I scanned and uploaded here original map from that book in Russian where you can see that Dassareti are depicted there as Illyrian tribe: http://www.dodaj.rs/f/3r/YW/4ZlRQxv4/ilirskaplemena.jpg So, map is certainly not my original research, but it is made according to the book of Russian author Valentin Vasiljevič Sedov.

Here are other sources which stating that Dassareti were Illyrian as well:

  • [2] - "Dassareti (Illyrian people), strategic location of, left neutral by Rome"
  • [3] - "He says, describing the Illyrian tribes from the southward, Partheni et Dassaretae prima tenent"
  • [4] - "Dassaretae, a people of Illyria"

PANONIAN (talk) 10:31, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Furthermore, the en wiki article lists Dassareti as Illyrians: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ancient_tribes_in_Illyria#Dassareti You have not removed that info from the article, but you removed only my map. Why? PANONIAN (talk) 10:41, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
It appears you have confused the ancient Greek Dassaretae, per en:wiki [[5]] who inhabited the region of today's Berat with the Illyrian Dessareti (the en:wiki gives an explanation about the Illyrian and the Greek tribe with the similar names). Moreover, the Illyrian tribe inhabited what is today Kosovo and northern Albania. Thus, the map needs to be corrected accordingly.Alexikoua (talk) 16:13, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm quoting en:wiki:

An Illyrian tribe of the same or similar name laid further north between the Dardani and the Ardiaei, which is often confused with that of the Dassaretae of the (Greek) Chaonian group

Alexikoua (talk) 16:16, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

In this map [[6]] there are both tribes mentionted.Alexikoua (talk) 16:17, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Makriyiannis image edit

Hi Alexikoua! I've not edited on Wikipedia/media for years, so sorry in advance for the technical difficulties I am about to have. I was researching the Greek War of Independence and am curious about the picture of Makriyiannis you added (back in 2011) that is listed as "Unknown - National historical Museum, Athens" (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Makrygiannis.jpg). I would love to track this painting down, and will likely go to the museum in person. Do you remember adding this line about being the the Historical Museum, or perhaps the user before you added it? Thanks for any help you can offer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MuseumKatie (talk • contribs) 12:49, 16 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome. I can confirm that this is part of the gallery of the National & historical Museum in Athens. It's in the old Parliament on Athenas Avenue, near Panepistimiou underground station. Unfortunately I can't find out who created this painting.Alexikoua (talk) 18:09, 18 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

File:Epirus.Late.Ottoman.png edit

@Alexikoua: Hello. Could you make a version of that map you authored, but just with the so-called "Chameria pocket"? It seems @Resnjari has copied your work and has created a far lower quality image (File:Albanian Cham dialect 19th century-early 20th century.jpg) that has been posted on the Cham Albanians article, and i also just included it in the Chameria article. I am asking for this because his selection of colours creates only confusion, not to mention that his description of colours suggests colorblindness. Your version is far better. Thanks in advance for your time. Demetrios1993 (talk) 11:14, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Alexikoua: I just noticed the dates of both images. I don't know whether he copied his work from you, or whether you were influenced by his, since it appears your work is two months younger than his. Still though, i would appreciate some assistance with a new version. Demetrios1993 (talk) 11:22, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Alexikoua: I also just noticed that there was a very honest discussion that relates on the talk page of the Cham Albanians article. Still though, colour choice and colour description are not ideal. What do you think? Demetrios1993 (talk) 11:55, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Alexikoua: Maybe in that new version i am suggesting, a Chameria geographic boundary could also be appropriate, something like what you did here, File:Albanian speech in Epirus region early 20th c.svg, although i don't know whether these Chameria boundaries are accurate. Again, these are just suggestions. Also, i believe what you were arguing about in the talk page, namely for a version that distinguishes the "exclave surrounded by non-Albanian speakers" would also be appropriate in the Chameria article, since it doesn't have to do exclusively with Cham Albanians like @Resnjari was arguing. Anyway, i personally also find your map appropriate for the Cham Albanians article as well, especially now that i grasp your context. Sorry for bombarding you with all these by the way. Demetrios1993 (talk) 12:22, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Exactly his work was mainly based on the .svg map I've already created, but unfortunately Resnjary's result is of lower value. Moreover, this area was the 'maximum extent of Albanian speech' which means that in some settlements Albanian speakers were a tiny minority (Parga etc.) or as Kokolakis stated there were even non-Albanian pockets inside this area (Sagiada). This is a more precise definition of Chameria, though a 'kaza of Chameria' had more precise limits (per Ottoman administration it consisted of the kazas of Paramythia, Margariti and Filiates).Alexikoua (talk) 14:55, 6 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the respond Alexikoua, i just saw it. Didn't receive an alert for it. You are correct. By the way, Parga also had a Greek-speaking Muslim community, with some of them having established a community in Smyrna later (where they continue to live). As for the Greek-speaking pockets that even existed within the smaller version of Chameria, it makes sense when you consider the first table that is already published in the article, namely under the "Historical" section. It shows that within the smaller version Albanophones (plus Greek-speaking Muslims) consisted 61.55% of the total population (46,068 is 61.55% of 74,844) in 1908, while for the larger version (the current map) Albanophones (plus Greek-speaking Muslims) consisted 27.97% of the total population (56,336 is 27.97% of 201,440) in 1908. Concerning the "Greek-speaking Muslims" that i bolded, i wouldn't underestimate their number. For example, the biased "Anti-Fascist Committee of Cham Immigrants" some 40 years later in 1946 (post-exodus of Cham Albanians) claimed that 28,000 Chams were evicted, 2,771 killed and 5,800 houses were looted and burned. Now imagine, even with those numbers, 40 years prior their population should have been smaller (as the population was increasing), and the total number of Muslims in 1908 was 34,406 (for the small version) and 42,174 (for the large version). Rationally, many of those were Greek-speaking Muslims. But besides all these which i deem secondary for the moment, i believe a map like the one @Cplakidas advised (similar to this one, Borders of Macedonia according authors (1843-1927).png) in his talk page, would be ideal and difficult for someone to negate since it would present both versions that are referenced in the article.
