Hello, Canvasgirl!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Rather more info/thoughts edit

Let's see if we can try and start this off again

  1. You have considerable knowledge/experience in some industry
  2. You have images you can share with us that would be well within the projects scope
  3. You need to be credited for those images

Based on that we ought to be able to work something out I guess. Bear in mind that any image on the internet is available to be ripped off by someone and they do that all the time so you need to accept that it may happen to your images here - we can try and ask nicely but some folk just don't listen. The best way (IMO) to deal with that is to upload reasonable sized images but no necessarily full sized ones (others would argue with me but) and I would ensure that your copyright info is in the EXIF data - some folk just aren't bright enough to remove it.

Upload some of those images and create something of a personal page for yourself here. It does not need to reveal anything dramatic but give us something that is an actual user page not a pr release. Put a link on your user page. Be very careful what you edit on Wikipedia - they have very stringent "conflict of interest" rules there. However you could quite happily link your user page there to your user page here (I'll help if you want).

So if you want to be part of it then give us some images please (& maybe do something about the deletion request you started which will otherwise give the wrong impression). Post anything you want to say here - I'll be watching and will help if I can. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 10:55, 28 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Herby! I will do that. If you see something I didn't do right, let me know I'm new at this and am not quite sure how to do all this correctly. I don't know how to undo the deletion. Should I just upload it again with my other photos? Thanks for all of your help! --Canvasgirl (talk) 02:02, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

You need to provide authority for licensing via COM:OTRS as it was deleted as a copyright violation because it was from your website - I know that/you know that but we do need to protect the copyright holder. Send authority for that image or maybe for any other images - once you have confirmation I can undelete it. Regards --Herby talk thyme 15:46, 5 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
