Welcome to Commons, and thanks for having contributed many good photos already! If you're interested of geocoding, the project page Commons:Geocoding has some guidelines on how it's done here, plus some other pointers. The geocodingtodo tool gives a gallery of your images yet to be geocoded, or the same with any category you find worth working on. They will then show up on the WikiMiniAtlas and the Google Earth Commons layer. We still have to keep doing it manually for a while, as the automatic metadata we get has been reported to contain not much at all. But the work isn't so bad! :) Good luck, and feel free to turn to me or anyone else for help with anything you may need. --Para 00:49, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

NYWT&S photos edit

This is a great discovery! (I especially like the NY photos.) {{PD-USNWR}} was a bit simpler to organize, just because there were apparently only five photographers at the publication, and the LOC listed them all for us on its policy page. It would probably be a worthwhile effort to go through and document all the photographers on their staff. I also notice that a number of photographs are marked as if they were taken by staff photographers, but no name is listed (search for "No copyright restriction known Staff photographer" or "NYWT&S staff photo") — perhaps we should e-mail the LOC about that. Also, a few of the images that list the photographer aren't actually categorized properly, so we'll have to do a raw search of their name to be complete. BTW, other photos we already have are Image:Muhammad Ali NYWTS.jpg (but where'd he get that great hi-res version?!) and Image:Woody_Guthrie.jpg.--Pharos 03:56, 25 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Finally responding to your query about my NYWTS uploads - all LOC images that display a thumbnail will have a higher resolution version, whether they bothered to link to it or not. The high res copies are located under http://memory.loc.gov/master/pnp/, which has a fairly simple organization; the exact directory breakdown varies slightly between collections, but it's easy to figure out. For example, the high res for http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3c13263 is at http://memory.loc.gov/master/pnp/cph/3c10000/3c13000/3c13200/3c13263u.tif. When I did my uploads, I looked through the 1000+ images from a search for "World-Telegram staff" (not all of which are actually newspaper staff photos), and tried to get all those relevant to Wikipedia articles. The ones I did are listed at User:Davepape/Images#New_York_World-Telegram_and_Sun; however, I may have missed some, and certainly a many of the more generic shots that I skipped (fish markets, labor actions, etc) are probably very useful - I was just thinking more narrowly at the time. Let me know if you need more assistance. --dave pape 16:29, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ah. I should have realised that! Thanks. The list will be very useful. Hopefully a bot will come along one day and add a template that will categorise them. Carcharoth (Commons) 18:36, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
If/when you've got a template, just tell me which one and I'll run a bot on the pics I uploaded. --dave pape 19:24, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • A warning about the NYWTS colletion..it also contains random press photos not owned by the NYWTS. That's why the LoC does not link to the high resolution version most of the time, the ones that do not link are generally not PD (or known for a fact as PD). -Nard the Bard 11:44, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

you keep reviewing on content... edit

FACs routinely are sorely lacking in actual thinking about the content (is it enough, is it too much, are there aspects missing, does it reflect the sources, etc.) And then FA will turn around and say "oh, no, we're not just a format check". Well...you are doing just fine, mister.

Hanging out here now, eh? I don't come here often (e-mail notification alerted me of this). So just noting this to remind myself who this is. I should actually do more image work, come to think of it. But maybe another time. Carcharoth (Commons) (talk) 01:14, 26 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Image work is the tits. Love working with Material Scientist, Miss MJ, Fallschirmjaeger. They are really the sweetest and great at helping "make the images not suck". I wrote to the Head of Ames and got the permission for those pics of the Uranium reduction in "Manhattan Project". Things even made Featured Picture and all. While I am FAR FAR FAR from a graphic designer and our website has flexibility, but also lacks the capabilities that a static site would have, it is still possible to come up with lots of image improvements in terms of content, quality, aspects depicted, schematic diagrams, etc. Like in AV8, a "time line" graphic for the background/design, would take away some of the boredom factor and give some referential structural support for a section that is a bit dry and alphabet soup-y. 71.246.147.40 03:03, 26 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

World War I images edit

The conclusion on the village pump was leading towards not taking a wide ranging view and just going on a case-by-case basis and the deletion request are all closed and archived with a conclusion to delete all. In fact, all of the memorial image deletion requests have resulted in the images being deleted. The position in the commons has been, unfortunately, rather consistent. Maybe the shear number will catch the attention of others but there is no point delaying the inevitable in the commons. I've put the question to the media copyright question noticeboard on wikipedia to see what their view would be towards transferring those images to wikipedia and hopefully the images employed in the articles themselves can be spared.--Labattblueboy (talk) 01:38, 10 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Her majesty Queen Victoria... edit

Just and FYI, I uploaded a cropped and recoloured version of the high resolution image at File:Her majesty Queen Victoria and the members of the royal family (cropped, retouched).jpg. Let me know if you find it useful, and your opinion as to whether it should retain the aged colouration. I uploaded it as it was because I really dislike the aged look, but I'm more than happy to keep it if you think it would be more useful (or if you have another colour spectrum in mind for restoration purposes). September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again! edit

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:34, 3 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

We need your feedback! edit

Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
