When categorising files, please avoid placing them into several categories that are directly linked within the same tree (e.g. a parent category and a child category – like Category:United Kingdom and Category:London), to prevent over-categorization of files and over-population of categories. Usually, only the most specific category should be used. See Commons:Categories for more details. Thank you.

Comment Hi, Apalsola. I know the rule well, but the rule is sometime inconvenience, because too deep category tree are always not intuitive for human [1]. Thus, I apply the rule more flexible way. --Clusternote (talk) 10:50, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Vocaloid sub-categorization

Hello,

I disagree with subcategorizing the photos of the Vocaloid cosplayers at the 2010 Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival into a very specific category, mostly because there are only 4 photos that would go into this category. While it is important to subcategorize as much as possible, I feel that the category is too specific and extraeneous. Yes, it’s true that there are other photos of cosplayes from other events, however I don’t feel that this prevents people from being able to find what they’re looking for in this case, because the number of images is small. In my opinion, character-specific categories would be better, such as Cosplay of Hatsune Miku. BrokenSphere 16:20, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

These media are almost same compositional arrangement of same characters, same models. The people who searching good example of Vocaloid character design might feel these media are slightly redundant.
Sub-categorization is a good way to reduce such redundancy. best regards, --Clusternote (talk) 01:39, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
While there are multiple images of the same characters, redundancy is an individual opinion. I feel that having multiple versions of the same character or person actually gives people more options on what to choose. Since the images are still there I'm not seeing how event-specific sub-categorization reduces redundancy. BrokenSphere 03:21, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Frankly speaking, although these media are good examples on popularity of Vocaloid cosplay, these seem to be not good sample to show design of Vocaloid characters.
Your contributions on Wikimedia Commons are wonderful. However, if you want to spread your photographs without considering the usage, Flickr may be a good option. --Clusternote (talk) 05:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
I do what I can to help out and everyone is welcome to their opinions whether they like what I upload or not. Speaking of Flickr, if you feel that there are better examples of the Vocaloid characters out there that is a source you are welcome to explore for migration to here. File:Theremin At The Musical Museum, Brentford, London.jpg

I notice you reverted my categorization of File:Theremin At The Musical Museum, Brentford, London.jpg? Your edit summary seemed more prohibitory than specific, and I notice that you have been asked before not to add redundant parent categories, as noted in COM:OVERCAT. What in the image is a theremin that is not an RCA theremin? How are Category:RCA Victor Company and Category:Theremin not redundant to Category:RCA Theremin in this image? --Closeapple (talk) 19:39, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Closeapple. I always maintain hundreds of categories and thousands of media relating musical instruments, and I knowCOM:OVERCAT very well. It is useful guideline for beginners, but it tends to disturb more rational representations, on current insufficient page design of Wikimedia Commons. For example, relatively important media are often scattered into deeper sub-categories, and other users can't easily find the existence of media at a glance, because we can't see the contents of hundreds of sub-categories at a time, and media can't be found without keywords. Possibly it cause waste of media and human resources.
The reasonable solution for it is to place a few media on parent of sub-category as example to indicate existence of related media and to easily find related media at a glance. On this issue, important media is File:Theremin At The Musical Museum, Brentford, London.jpg, and parent of sub-categories is Category:RCA Victor Company and Category:Theremin. Thanks, --Clusternote (talk) 20:47, 22 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi, please do not waste space by re-uploading to correct a filename error. We now have a working {{Rename}} facility use that for future corrections, thanks :-) --Tony Wills 10:39, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Tony. Thanks for you advice. Of course, I know the {{rename}} tag well and used it for a while. But, a several months ago, an administrator rejected my rational requests without any valid reasons (probably she/he lose oneself at that time), and since then I'm avoiding to use it. If the {{rename}} was properly processed at now, I want to use it, of course. --Clusternote 16:17, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

The new version is pretty ugly (though better :-), have you considered just making it a diagrammatic illustration, perhaps just a straight on view, all done with a paint program or as an SVG ? --Tony Wills (talk) 10:51, 4 October 2011 (UTC)
NO PROBREM! It is already rendered by SVG over bitmap. In my opinion, plain SVG is quite tasteless because natural noises are not exist, thus I use bitmap as far as exist. But you have the knobs on one angle and the buttons facing the other way. It does not look like a photograph, it does not look like a proper diagram. I think it may still be deleted. --Tony Wills (talk) 20:13, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

Category tree

Hi Clusternote, regarding your revert:

The template was created in 2008 as a workaround for the issue described in bug 1211 (the formerly odd display of subcategories in case of categories with too many images or articles/galleries included). Back then subcategory display on Commons was effectively coupled to file names, i.e. on the first page of a category you had 200 images with file names starting with A to C, and you also had only subcategories A–C on the first page, etc.). This issue is gone since MediaWiki 1.17 was deployed.

The category tree template can display a maximum of 200 subcategories (not more), which is exactly the same ability that MW has by default now. But MediaWiki's category pages additionaly have a "(next 200)" link, the template hasn't. So the template is, quite simply, superfluous. And there's nothing to fix. The template should be removed therefore; see also Template talk:Category tree.

Note: The template actually is useful in other namespaces, or when used with additional parameters (e.g. "display parents"). I only remove transclusions of the template in its default version (without parameters). Regards --:bdk: 02:58, 11 November 2011 (UTC)

As I already noted on Category:Musical instruments, structure of that category is extremely complex and we need {{Category tree}}-type integrated interface to see structure at a glance, instead of new inconvenient individual superfluous interface. Although these two interface are functionally equivalent, understandability and usability are different, and these two factors are very important on user interface design, in my opinion. If some bugs were remain on {{Category tree}} and that was your reason to delete, please fix these bugs instead of delete tree, because we still need integrated single category tree view. best regards, --Clusternote (talk) 23:22, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Akihabara

Hello.

Do you know Akihabara and Akiba-kei? The Akihabara is not music town. This photograph is just one item in the store (LaOX MUSICVOX), does not symbolize the Akihabara. Symbolizes of Akihabara are Electronics part and shops, And DVD shops, Animation shops, Cosplay restaurant.

I feel very uncomfortable to this revert.--Aimaimyi (talk) 11:05, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Wow. You're living in Tokyo for 20 years. Incidentally, I was born and grew up in Tokyo. And, I'm always in Tokyo. (Over 3X years)
You would know the history of Akihabara. Radio town → Electrical town → Micom (Microcomputer) town → PC town → Wotaku town … Music town??
What is music of Akihabara? Is it AKB48, Music soft, Wotagei, Hare Hare Yukai dance, or Vocaloid? Which news is it?
Please demonstrate plainly the music of Akihabara. --Aimaimyi (talk) 15:40, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

File:Barrel organ from the 1880ies.JPG

Hello!

It's actually a Fairground organ. Is a Fairground organ the same as a Street organ? Regards, High Contrast (talk) 16:55, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Barrel organ from the 1880ies.JPG
Thanks for your comment. The logo on body said "Briether St...enorgel 1848", and I estimated it as "Briether Straßenorgel 1848" ("Briether Street organ 1848" in English). However, it may be possibly incorrect, because I didn't yet verify the correct model name.
In my eyes, distinction of Faiground organ (Band organ in the US), Dance organ (slightly larger fairground), and the Street organ (including Dutch street organ) is slightly difficult. Therefore, I'm trying model estimation and categorization of instruments, based on image searching using keyword gotten from logo.
Any help and corrections are welcome. --Clusternote (talk) 04:16, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for your support with this image: yes, it is a "Briether Straßenorgel 1848", but it is not from 1848 but from the 1880ies - although I don't know the eact year of construction. Regards, High Contrast (talk) 16:42, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Vandalism

Thank you for the notification about «vandalism». Do a correct job and it would be accepted. Referencies are not part of picture description! -- Хрюша ?? 17:33, 26 December 2011 (UTC)

That organ has a "Karl Frei" logo on its body, and the description on that page support it. However, "Karl Frei" is usually known as "Carl Frei" (1884–1967), and we should clarify the relation between both names. A reliable description by Museum für Musikautomaten about Karl Frei's birth and death dates (1884-1967) [1] provides important clues indicating identity of both names. Probably the place where I wrote the reference might be inappropriate, and your last editing is good job! thanks for your support, --Clusternote (talk) 03:34, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Category:Inductees to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame

Hello. I am not sure why you moved this category. Please raise the issue on the category talk page if there is something I am missing. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 02:24, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

The reason for category renaming is for matching it with English Wikipedia category, en:Category:Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees. I think that there is no reason to use different category name between English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
However, I've just forgotten the needs of forming the consensus of community. I'll restore these category if you didn't agree with changes, then try to form consensus. I'm expecting your sincere opinion. best, --Clusternote (talk) 02:40, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. No need to get consensus every time you want to change a category -- Commons would grind to a halt if we all had to do that. You are entitled to be bold and make changes. The time for consensus is when someone disagrees. So no worries about forgetting - your actions were completely valid.

Commons categories are routinely different from their en-wp equivalents. We are not tied to the category name formats in any one of the dozens of Wikipedias, nor could we be. Categories play a very different role in the Commons than they do in Wikipedia, and the needs and concerns here are very different than over there; unlike Wikipedia, tens of thousands of files are categorized each week (if not more). So contributors can easily find the categories they want, we therefore have the inextricable movement towards a standard naming format on the Commons: subject followed by descriptive/modifying language. It makes life at the Commons easier. Having the same category names on the Commons and en-wp offers comparatively little benefit, since the categories are easily linked to one another regardless. Cheers, --Skeezix1000 (talk) 20:30, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Category:Monitor world (sound reinforcement)

Could you explain the somewhat oddly named Category:Monitor world (sound reinforcement)? I'm not at all familiar with the term "Monitor world" and I'm an ex-musician. - Jmabel ! talk 15:52, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

"Dunkys monitor world at Soundwave 2010"
Hi, Jmabel. The term "Monitor world" have been used by Mr. Duncan Underwood @ Flickr, and it means side-stage space for dedicated monitor-mixer, etc (most right black rectangle on the figure), in contrast to main-mixer space known as Front of House (FOH).
Although I have not the experience of using the dedicated monitor-mixer (in my old school days), and also I don't know the formal name of that space, however, the idea itself seems rational for flexible adjustment of the balance of foldbacks (stage monitors). I'm glad if you kindly corrected the category into more appropriate name. sincerely, --Clusternote (talk) 16:30, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm concerned mainly because of possible confusion with MonitorWorld.com. - Jmabel ! talk 15:20, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
Indeed. Also I sometimes found several other terms can be easily confused with different notions. If possible, referring the popular usage of terms on the other projects or reliable sources, these issues should be gradually solved. --Clusternote (talk) 16:17, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Pipe organs template

I'm not sure why, but {{Pipeorgansbuiltyear}} is putting organs into the wrong categories; for example, {{PipeOrgansBuilt|190|1}}<nowiki>, which is correctly placed at [[:Category:Pipe organs built in 1901]], makes the category a subcategory of [[:Category:Built in 1900]] rather than of [[:Category:Built in 1901]]. ~~~~

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. Hello. I've renamed the above file as per your uploader request just as I had done for some of your earlier uploads. But I'll be pleased if you could please explain your idea of renaming this file on my talk page, especially when the new name is not too different from earlier name. Thanks for uploading File:Gibson Joe Bonamassa Les Paul Standard, CES2013.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it please read the text above again and follow the links in it, if you still need help ask at the   Commons:Help desk in any language you like to use. --Nikbot 14:24, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello Clusternote/Archive 1, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:The Beatles in Washington Avenue, Houston, TX.jpg

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

With such recent non-Federal artworks in the USA, the artist who created the work retains copyright. See Commons:Derivative work. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 12:44, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, when I upload the photo, I did not know the sculpture (by non-Federal) is retained copyright by its creator. I'm try to understand the situation. Thank you for pointing out. --Clusternote (talk) 13:46, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Clusternote. Please get our uploads out of this maintenance category. --Leyo 08:33, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Leyo, thanks for your notification. When I moved these images using Move-to-commons assistant on wmflabs.org (Wikimedia project), several mis-translations of license seems occurred. I'll try to fix these:
File:Linn Isobarik loudspeaker crossover - early version inside isobaric chamber.jpg
File:Linn Isobarik loudspeaker external crossover in stand.jpg
File:Linn Isobarik tweeters taken out of different Isobariks.jpg
Many thanks! --Clusternote (talk) 08:55, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
