Thanks for uploading Image:Lafayette fires on the Cordeliers Club.jpeg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

File:Slumdog Millionaire Oscars.jpg edit

Critically evaluate Flickr licenses File:Slumdog Millionaire Oscars.jpg has been marked as a copyright violation. You may have preserved the information shown on Flickr correctly when transferring the image here, but the Flickr uploader is not the copyright holder of this image. Either the image was created by someone else, or it is a derivative of someone else's work. As stated in Commons:Licensing, only the copyright holder may issue a license, so the one shown on Flickr is invalid.

Always remember to critically evaluate Flickr licenses. Photostreams with professional-looking photographs, album covers, posters, and images in a wide range of styles or quality taken by many different cameras often indicate that the Flickr uploader either does not understand or does not care about copyright matters.

Hi, Diaa! I noticed that you started uploading images from the Memory of Modern Egypt Digital Archive. When I created the corresponding template and category, I went to great lengths to make it clear that not all works should be uploaded on Commons, but only those which are confirmed to be free (either through their author's death date or through their publication date) in both Egypt and in the United States. Therefore, the next time you upload images from the archive, please make sure to follow these steps:

 • Provide the image's URL.
 • Copy-paste the image's original Arabic-language description exactly as it is, since this is the only way to find the image in the archive (description pages do not have permanent links).
 • Explain why the image is in the public domain in Egypt by using an appropriate Egypt-specific tag (please do not use PD-Egypt; it has been deprecated). Using a tag is simply not enough: the work's publication date and/or its author's death date should be mentioned. This information is essential since it justifies the use of the tag (the tag alone is worthless). I understand that not all the images in the Modern Egypt archive have such information. If such information is not available, then simply avoid uploading the image(s) in question.
 • Insert an additional tag indicating why the work in question is in the public domain in the US, since Commons policy requires works to be PD both in their source country and in the US.

Best regards. --BomBom (talk) 19:38, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

PD-Egypt-Art edit

Hi, Diaa! I saw the message you left on my talk page. Like Martin H. said, it's not necessary to have an Egypt-specific PD-Art template. The PD-Art template already allows you to integrate another template within it, using the following syntax: PD-Egypt.... See File:Antarah fighting.jpg and File:Antarah ibn Shaddad & Abla.jpg for examples of this, where PD-Egypt-folklore is used within PD-Egypt-Art. (By the way, PD-Art should not be used for photographs). However, one template that is indeed currently missing is an Egypt-specific tag for sound recordings. I'm going to create it in the next few days. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 14:48, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Diaa. Exactly, the PD-Art is only an expansion to indicate that making a photo of an 2D Artwork is not creative and does not provide copyright. The photographed artwork must be public domain or under a free license. For scans we have PD-scan: Scanning a photo does not provide copyright. If the photo is public domain for some reason a simple scan of this photo is also public domain. Be careful with collored b&w photographs, they are not necessarily public domain because colloring is a creative act. --Martin H. (talk) 17:14, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Dudu90!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Commonist edit

Commonist does not support autoloading descriptions. I could add support to it, but without a bit of recoding it would be a bit of a hack. It's probably best to just use a different program/library than Commonist and write support for caching descriptions. --Odie5533 (talk) 01:53, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can probably write you something in Python this weekend if you haven't figured it out by then. I still need output parameters though. A text file with the same name as the image? CSV? XML? What type of output are you looking for? --Odie5533 (talk) 13:34, 15 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Diaa! I'm sorry I didn't reply to the messages you left on my talk page. As you can see from my edit history, I've been absent from Commons for a while because I have an ongoing Wikipedia FLC. Anyway, I commented on the undeletion request you told me about. The files shouldn't be undeleted, in my opinion. I also saw you uploaded photos by Riad Shehata. Nice job! At least we're sure those are PD. But please don't forget to add the Arabic-language descriptions, and if you have time an English translation. By the way, I found another great archive about Egypt. It has much more detailed information than the Modern Egypt Archive, and the publication dates are given. It is thus very easy to identify whether an image is PD or not. Even if an image is not PD, this should not pose a problem since the whole content of the website is released under a Creative Commons license. I'm going to add the archive to the requests for batch uploads. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 14:59, 2 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

This media was probably deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Punakha_(1).jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (:File:Punakha_(1).jpg).

If you created the content yourself, enter Own as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, GFDL or Cc-zero to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

OTRS edit

I am an OTRS volunteer. I was going through tickets, and I came across one that had 5 images you uploaded. I went to check out the images, and noticed a ticket number had already been added. I thought that was odd, that an open ticket that no agent had responded to had been added to an image. I went and checked everything out, and confirmed that this ticket is still open, and has NOT been approved yet. So I'm writing to see your side of things. I don't know the full story, but I'm inclined to say "Please do not add OTRS tickets to images, ever. That is the job of OTRS agents". -Andrew c (talk) 14:08, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I contacted someone on the otrs channel and asked him if the mail arrived. After that I asked him for the ticket numbers so that I can add them for all images and did so. I don't see why the ticket would still be open. --Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 14:11, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I just want to add here, that this is common practice: Uploaders often add their ticket numbers to the upload, they know them from the response email probably, see e.g. File:Grupa Believe.jpg. --Martin H. (talk) 17:53, 2 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Delinker edit

Hi. Thank you for your inputs on COM:DL. This little note to tell you that on Commons, there is no strict naming standard for locations. It can be "Park of xxx" (but some people use "park in xxx), "Park (xxx)", and "Park, xxx". The latter seems to become the prevailing standard ("Park, xxx" form for where it is, "item (painter)" form for what it is), as this avoids the in/of problem and is extensible: ("park, city, country").

Anyway, most regions have their particular style of naming, and where you have people with a long categorisation experience, such as user:G.dallorto in Italy (230 0000 + edits) and in the Category:Parks in Wrocław, they prefer (quite rightly) to have a uniform naming scheme because they know that for most parks, one day or another, a park with the same name will popup. Moreover, if you do a lot of categorisation work, a category name is better predictable and systematic, so you don't have to check all the time if there is only one or several such items. All this to say that I try to avoid wasting time for removing disambiguation or change formats, particularly if I know that I will have to de the the reverse operation sooner or later. Enjoy the work. --Foroa (talk) 06:33, 2 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

The functionality of the template Rename has recently changed. You might need to clear your cache to see the changes. If successful you should then be able to use the new "Quick adding" link in the template to instruct CommonsDelinker to replace the old name with the new name in all wikis. Please use that every time you rename a file. If further questions arise, feel free to write on my talk page --DieBuche (talk) 10:00, 2 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dudubot and File:Flickr - bobster855 - Iran, 1971.jpg edit

I'm not sure exactly what went wrong with this file, but I see at least two problems (or three or four, depending on how you count) you should try to check for in the future:

 1. "Blacklisted Flickr user" is not a very good file description (and might be a hint that the file shouldn't have been uploaded to begin with).
 2. The bot shouldn't upload MPEG4 videos to Commons without converting them to Ogg Theora first, and definitely shouldn't upload them with a ".jpg" suffix. (The fact that it's even possible to do that is arguably a bug in MediaWiki.)

Just thought I should mention these issues to you, in case you hadn't noticed them already. If they're caused by the bot framework you're using, you might want to consider reporting them to whomever wrote it. In any case, thanks for your contributions and have a nice day. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:46, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Ps. The second issue also affects File:Flickr - omar chatriwala - Watching the Kaaba.jpg. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:47, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, some problems came with this batch upload. I will watch out in the future to avoid such problems.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 21:49, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Old postcards edit

Hello,

It is great that these old postcards are now available on Commons. There are some changes and more work required:

 1. Please check all categories created: they should be in lower case (COVER). Could you please also link new categories?
 2. I think that the category Unknown should be removed, at least when the date is known.

Thanks, Yann (talk) 15:05, 17 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

For consistency with the other files, would you rename this? In the meantime Sandstein added the year it was taken and apparently it can only be renamed by the uploader.  Docu  at 08:09, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think only users with file renaming rights can rename images (check Commons:File renaming. I renamed it as requested.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 19:44, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think that Docu meant that only you could rename because the reaname did not meet any of the other rename criteria (so I refused to rename). --MGA73 (talk) 20:57, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well, now that the comma is removed from #6, it might clear. (Oddly I recall some admins renaming tons of files based on that .. files that weren't even part of a series like these). Thanks to both of you for looking into this.  Docu  at 21:02, 19 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Videos from Flickr edit

I've fixed File:Flickr - Tokuriki - Coca-cola Shanghai Expo2010 Video.jpg and the other four videos your bot uploaded in MPEG4 format with a ".jpg" suffix. However, it would be better if you could fix Dudubot not to do that in the future. Thanks. :) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 02:17, 16 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I still have to implement that in flickrripper.py, Multichill (talk) 09:14, 16 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Latvian politicians edit

Hi. I've discovered a gold mine for Latvian politicians at here. The flickr user is Saeima (which is the national parliament of Lativa) and has the official national parliament coat of arms. Given the extent of the photos 2300 odd including valuable ones of sessions like this etc I'd say it is definately a photographer insider of the Saeima. I wondered if you could use a bot to upload all of the photos of the politicians to the commons unless there is some problem. Photos like this are very hard to get hold of; its obvious to me that the person who uploaded them to flickr is the photographer so has the right to release the images under this license. Please can you bot upload them, it won't work when I do it. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:11, 11 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

BTW, it has been over a month and noone seemed to respond to your request. any reason for that? -- The Egyptian Liberal (talk) 05:17, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Image making edit

An image that maps the process following the 2011 Egyptian Constitutional Referendum if the result is Yes or No.

Hey there Diaa! How have you been? I hope all is well.

I was wondering if you could help out with this. A constitutional referendum will be held soon in Egypt, and the image here describes what would follow either result. It's in Arabic, and I've been working with another editor to translate it to English. We've put that in annotations on the image's Commons page [4]. But I can't handle anything beyond Paint, and we want to create a completely new image in English. The Egyptian Liberal (talk) 16:46, 17 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

It has been been added to the Graphic Lab BTW. -- The Egyptian Liberal (talk) 02:37, 18 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
