Adding new author and books

New contributor here. Attempting to add an author and her books including book cover images to Wiki. Just having a hard time finding the proper procedures/etiquette. The images are owned by author, so what am I doing wrong?

Could you clarify why you believe the picture that File:Lukyanenko O. V. In the Grip of De-Stalinization.jpg is a derivative work of has sufficient permission based on the OTRS ticket? I see no evidence that the permission is valid for the picture itself. Bonjour (j'espère que le français convient),

Vous avez ajouté un bandeau d'admissibilité sur le poster de film que je viens d'uploader indiquant qu'« Il manque une preuve de permission pour ce fichier ». Je ne comprends pas car il s'agit d'une oeuvre anonyme publiée il y a plus de 60 ans (cela fera 79 ans dans 4 mois pour être exact) donc dans le domaine public en Inde, comme je l'ai indiqué. Le poster lui-même fait très probablement partie du fond du NFAI (National Film Archive of India) dont toutes les photographies antérieures à 1957 (aujourd'hui) sont dans le domaine public conformément à la législation indienne.

Pour information, ce film n'est jamais sorti ailleurs qu'en Inde et donc le poster n'a jamais été publié non plus ailleurs. De plus, le film est probablement perdu. Il ne reste aujourd'hui que ce poster, le "song booklet" et quelques photographies promotionnelles.

Made a mistake by uploading screenshot of Google maps, but can anyone help me out please?

I am pretty new at Wikipedia and it was a first time upload to Wikimedia commons, so sorry if I violated any copyright rule for uploading a screenshot of Google Maps to Wikipedia

I consider my paragraph about the discovery of the remains of the lost castle an important contribution to Wikipedia and would like that the reader has the possibility to see for himself. I read that it is possible to add a geolocation of the place but as I am a rookie, I dont know how to add it.

Is anybody able to do this edit on my behalf?

Sauf quand elles dérivent d'un travail placé sous une licence précise, quand je suis le simple relais d'une œuvre existante ou quand leur objet ou leur sujet le requièrent, je place toutes mes contributions à Commons dans le domaine public. C'est une question. Une capture plein écran ou la capture d'une part significative d'un écran, spécialement si elle intègre des éléments qui singularisent l'image, entre autre l'organisation de la page et les logos, pourrait être dans ce cas. La capture d'une part restreinte d'écran qui donne à voir du texte organisé de manière très convenue, en ce cas la forme devenue canonique pour les moteurs de recherche généraux ou locaux, ne me paraît pas susceptible de pouvoir faire l'objet d'une licence. En fait, même si cette capture est proprement identifiable comme provenant d'une page de Google c'est discutable : pratiquement tous les procès engagés par des entreprises du logiciel en se basant sur l'apparence, y compris fonctionnelle, de leur produit, ont conduit à un non-lieu, précisément parce qu'une présentation ne peut pas faire l'objet d'une licence, sauf comme mentionné quand des éléments ou l'ensemble de cette présentation (logos, nom de produit, organisation entièrement semblable de l'ensemble, ce qui en ces cas ressort de la copie ou du plagiat) peut être invoqué.

Là-dessus, si tu n'es pas convaincu par mes arguments tu peux, et je t'en remercie d'avance le cas échéant, m'indiquer quelle licence invoquer et en quels termes, ou faire toi-même la correction, ou rogner l'image pour qu'elle devienne vraiment anonyme (je pense à la partie inférieure, non nécessaire pour l'usage que j'en ai eu), ou demander la suppression de l'image s'il n'existe pas de licence compatible avec celle de Commons qu'on puisse utiliser. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi Framawiki, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

1. You edited User:Framawiki/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
2. Though, that change appears to introduce 4 new jshint issues — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. This is my own work based on an OpenStreetMap background. I've already drawn those 2 maps for which I have had any problem concerning licencing as they are my own work.

Tout d'abord merci pour tes/vos conseils, j'en ai profité pour rajouter les informations concernant la licence Openstreetmap sur mes 2 autres cartes.

Concernant le renommage du fichier SVG il est vrai que doubler le SVG est superflux mais ce fichier contient les 2 cartes des 2 autres cartes PNG de Douai. Bonsoir, je vous écris suite à la photo que j'ai posté sur "wikicommons" il y a quelques mois et qui semble poser problèmes.
Il s'agit du fichier "Vincent_french_singer.jpg" , libre de droits, ticket: 2017103010012764 que j'ai déposé sous licence CC BY-SA 4.0
Je ne sais pas bien où vous écrire mais j'ai reçu un message me demandant de le faire. Je l'ai fait à plusieurs endroits mais ceux-ci étant sans réponse, je pense que vous n'avez pas eu les messages et donc je le fais ici.
Je ne comprends pas ou se trouve le problème, le 30/10/2017 j'ai envoyé le formulaire indiqué, en attestant de ma bonne foi du fait que je suis bien l'auteur de ce cliché. J'avais, à l'époque pris cette photo, le 27 Avril 1999, en photo argentique, je l'ai donc scannée afin de la mettre sur wikicommons. Je ne vois pas ce que je peux faire de plus, j'ai laissé mes coordonnées dans mon premier courriel, vous pouvez me contacter sans soucis.
je peux vous envoyer la photo originale par courrier postal.
Ayant vu aussi le message que la photo posait des problèmes à cause de sa résolution, je l'ai re-scannée, entière cette fois-ci et avec un scan de meilleure qualité.
Je ne l'ai peut-être pas postée au bon endroit, dans quel cas je m'en excuse et dans ce cas merci de me le préciser.
Je reviens vers vous car la créatrice de la page sur l'artiste m'a envoyé un courriel pour me dire que votre message y était toujours et que la photo allait être supprimée d'ici 30 jours.

Comme indiqué sur fr:Wikipédia:Requête aux agents OTRS/Statut des Files, le délai maximal avant clôture des tickets de la file permissions::fr est de 60 jours, le votre sera donc sûrement prochainement résolu. Et ne vous inquiétez pas, un fichier dit "supprimé" pourra toujours être restauré après que le ticket soit traité par un volontaire, moi ou un autre. Je suis Zenman, membre de Wikimedia Community User Group Côte d'Ivoire, plus particulièrement actif sur le volet éditorial.

A notre demande, une première tentative visant à importer cette image sur Wikimedia Commons a été effectuée par l'écrivain Josué Guébo, lui-même, le 20 octobre 2017. Le fichier a néanmoins été supprimé parce qu'il n'y avait, semble-t-il, « pas de preuve que l'auteur ou le détenteur des droits ait accepté de placer le fichier sous la licence qui figure sur la page de description du fichier ».

Nous avons contacté à nouveau M. Guébo à ce sujet, et lui avons conseillé de demander à son photographe (M. Marc Dja dont le nom apparaît dans les métadonnées du fichier), de suivre la procédure exigée par Wikimedia Commons en envoyant un courrier électronique à l'équipe OTRS afin de placer l'image sous licence libre. Apparemment, la procédure a été suivie, mais des insuffisances persisteraient.

Pourriez-vous, si possible nous faire part des insuffisances constatées et/ou des démarches complémentaires à entreprendre pour confirmer de manière indiscutable que M. Marc Dja est bien la source d'origine du fichier ?

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

• To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
• To perform file name swaps.
• When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Bonsoir TomT0m, l'usage est effectivement d'utiliser {{Wikimedia screenshot}} dans la section Licence du fichier. Je pense que le faible nombre de captures envoyées ne justifie pas l'ajout d'option dans le système d'upload. A noter que idéalement un crédit des auteurs (par ex via un lien vers l'historique de la page concernée) et des images présentes dans les screenshots serait à mettre en description des fichiers, sinon cela peut être vu comme du copyvio (gentil copyvio, mais tout de même) Bonne soirée --Framawiki (please notify) (talk) 20:58, 17 May 2020 (UTC)

Relicensing via Wikimedia-screenshot

I’ve noticed you’ve changed some files to use {{Wikimedia-screenshot}} (e.g. Special:Diff/777048772 and Special:Diff/777051424). I don’t think this is appropriate. In the first case, the Wikimedia project in the screenshot is Wikidata, so all the content shown is CC0, and there’s no reason to apply the GFDL; there’s also no WMF logo anywhere. In the second case, the screenshot doesn’t even depict any Wikimedia wiki, and the software shown is unrelated to MediaWiki, nor is it licensed under the GPL (the query service UI actually uses the Apache License). @Lucas Werkmeister: Hello! the Category:Wikidata screenshots & co categories are I have the impression a mess in term of license. Half, as you say, is just text under cc-0, the other half contains logos, other licensed images ( File:Wikidata Q42 screenshot 2018-06-10.png ), or even some maps from openstreetmap without attribution, that, as far I remember, is required (File:Screenshot_WDQS_location_features_on_a_map.png).

I did the best I could without checking them one by one: adding the appropriate template, which isn't wrong but may not be ideal in the case where only cc-0 text is present. The worst my modifications can add is to put {{Wikimedia-screenshot}} on a screenshot that contains only cc-0, which I don't think is materially wrong. (or it is?)

Now, if you don't think it's the good way to deal with the issue and you'd rather have someone manually check each photo, I can revert.

Regarding Mediawiki oustide wikimedia wikis, either I've used wrong category or the image itself is wrongly categorised (wikidata/wikibase).  File:WDQS - Table Result View.png  is in Category:Wikidata SPARQL data visualisations, I assume it's wikimedia sparql server, I'm sorry if it's not the case.

@Framawiki: Yes, I would prefer a revert. I agree that the category is a mess, but I think an automated modification does more harm than good: only a manual cleanup can check for issues like the ones you described. And I don’t know whether it’s “materially” wrong to add the template, but to me it feels morally wrong to add additional licenses to files I uploaded without even asking me.

Perhaps part of the problem is that {{Wikimedia-screenshot}} does too much at once? It combines two licenses, some informational text, and several disclaimers, with only a minimal amount of configuratibility (|logo=no can be used to suppress the Wikimedia logo inside the template, but doesn’t change the text content at all). I wouldn’t mind a smaller template, e.g. “this is a Wikidata screenshot” (without any license blocks).

(Also, I just noticed that {{Wikimedia-screenshot}} now seems to contain a mixture of CC BY-SA 3.0 and 4.0 references… I’ll bring that up on the template talk page.) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:21, 25 June 2023 (UTC)
