14.01.2023 - 325th day of the war

This Saturday, the aggressor country Russia launched a strike on the cities of Ukraine, firing 38 missiles. In particular, they hit a nine-story building in Dnipro with 16 entrances, where about 1,700 people lived. So far, 12 dead and 64 injured are known.
There are civilian casualties in other cities of Ukraine as well.
There was one rocket explosion in Vinnytsia and one not far from Vinnytsia. Air defense was also heard. Emergency blackouts also become longer.

Hello George, hope you are (relatively) okay? Could you take a look at the recent edit I made on wikidata? This and this image are in the Category:Private collections and that is not what the category is meant for. File remaning requests

Hello George, at Category:Media requiring renaming we have right now many file renaming requests for photos from the Ukraine. It would be best if these requests would be checked and handled by someone who speaks Ukrainian and knows the Ukraine well. Do you know somebody with filemover rights who could handle these requests? this sculpture is called "Unknown Monument". The main character of the sculpture simply left, leaving behind a cape and a cocked hat in the Napoleonic style. Everything else is up to the viewer's imagination.

This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. A little request for mediation

Hello George, I hope that under the circumstances you are doing relatively well. I would like to ask a favour of you because you are an experienced Ukrainian admin and a friendly, communicative person; therefore I hope you can clear up a little misunderstanding and by this settle some trouble.

User Radomianin does a great job in Commons maintenance. One of his last undertakings was to browser all the photos contributed to Wiki Loves Folklore and to check if photos which show persons contain a {{Consent}} or {{Personality rights}} template; if not, Radomianin has added the {{Personality rights}} template. As I understand it, this is the right thing to do and very helpful, as it makes any users of the photos aware of the privacy rights. Now an Ukrainian user, Микола Василечко, has misunderstood Radomianin’s changes. He has warned Radomianin, accused him of vandalism (!) and reverted changes to Ukrainian photos (diff link). Obviously Микола did not understand that Radomianin just wanted to help him and all other users. I guess that Микола misunderstood the meaning of the {{Personality rights}} template, and he also seems not to know that it is allowed (and often welcome) that other users change the description page for photos by adding categories, templates etc., because Commons is a collaborative project.

In my opinion, this dispute is annoying, especially because Radomianin only wanted to help. It would be great if you could briefly explain to Микола in Ukrainian what the {{Personality rights}} template means and that such changes are allowed and do not constitute vandalism. That would be great to settle the dispute and avoid such disputes in the future.

Ви брали участь в українських наукових фотоконкурсах раніше, тож, сподіваємося, вас зацікавить і цей. Подавати зображення можна у п’яти категоріях: «Люди в науці», «Мікроскопія», «Живі організми», «Загальна категорія», «Нефотографічні зображення». Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

12.23.2023 - 668th day of the war

After the transition to the New Julian church calendar, from September 1, 2023, the dates of Orthodox holidays in Ukraine will change. So, now we will celebrate Christmas together with all of Europe at the same time.
Air raid sirens sound almost every day. Today twice in Vinnytsia. Since February 24, 2022, in prosperous cities such as Kyiv and Vinnytsia, there have been more than 900 sirens and more than 1,060 hours citizents spent in bomb shelters.
No matter what, Ukraine will continue to live and celebrate Christmas.

12.29.2023 - 674th day of the War

I would like to write something kind, festive and Christmas news. However, the big War continues.

The last few days have been successful for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Four Russian Sukhoi Su-34 and one Sukhoi Su-30 were shot down.
Russian landing ship Novocherkassk was destroyed in Crimea.

Today Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on many cities in Ukraine. About 110 missiles and about 36 Iranian-made drones were fired. There are killed and wounded civilians in several cities. The victims continue to be pulled out from under the rubble.

Explosions were heard in Vinnytsia due to air defense operations.

How big is this war?
Russia's losses since 02.24.2022 are:

• Tanks - 5,953
• Armored personnel carriers - 11,033
• Aircraft - 329
• Helicopters - 324
• Personnel over 357,000

For comparison, the entire German army (Bundeswehr) has about 800 tanks. Russia lost 7.4 times more tanks than the entire German army got in service.

Добрий день! Мені прийшло повідомлення, що частина моїх фото на сторінках Мар'ївка та Радомський буде видалена. Пишуть про "На цей момент на сторінці опису файлу вказано, хто створив похідний твір (світлину), але не вказано автора (авторів) оригінального твору, тому загальний ліцензійний статус файлу є нез’ясований. Якщо ви не є автором оригінального твору, зафіксованому на цьому зображенні (цій світлині), Вам необхідно вказати автора (авторів) та/або правовласника (правовласників)." Ці фото було зроблено в 50ті роки, автори невідомі, скоріш за все, вже давно померли, оригінали знаходяться у мене, я їх відсканувала і виклала у вікіпедію. Тепер яким чином мені їх підвердити, звідки?
