Request edit

Hello! Because of the lack of great photos of some musicans, I have pressed people on the web to contribute some here. The result is positive; folks are willing to upload photos, but I don't know how! Can someone help me with this? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:59, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Greetings; I can help you! edit

Hi, I replied here. Giggy (talk) 08:32, 13 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Response edit

Hello again! Firstly I have no idea how you got to File:Blason ville fr Rivedoux-Plage (Charente-Maritime).svg. I searched for Counting Crows and didn't see that anywhere. Weird.

I assume the other 12 or so photos are at Category:Counting Crows? You can add them to the Counting Crows gallery if you like by editing the page [1], but try and not put every image there. It's a gallery so it should try and showcase the band and its members without showing lots of photos of each person.

As for the David Lindley photo, I moved it to a better category.

Let me know if any of this is confusing or if you need some more help! Giggy (talk) 06:32, 18 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Giggy, that's great, you're still here! Now that I understand Wikipedia, --it's only been 2 years! I want to understand more about the Wikimedia Commons! First, I wanted you to know there are two places that had photos from the Counting Crows. Look up the result, once you type their name here in the search engine. There might be about 3 photos there. But, look here: [2] There should be more photos there than just a few. See? And I don't know how to merge things. Heck, I don't even know how to find anything here. I need help. Will you adopt me? Help! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 15:04, 19 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I forgot to reply until now. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking now... since I think I answered your question just above.
When you do a search for "Counting Crows" you get to this page.
The first result is Counting Crows which is a gallery. It's just a normal page that anyone can edit and add stuff to.
The second result is Category:Counting Crows which is a category. You can add things to the category by editing their actual page (so if you want to add File:Counting Crows @ Ancienne Bruxelles.jpg to Category:Counting Crows you insert the code to the image's description page. If you click here you can see that text down the bottom.
There are three photos on the Counting Crows page because nobody has added any more photos to it. If you want, you can go ahead and do so.
Does this answer your question? Giggy (talk) 01:51, 21

January 2009 (UTC)

Well, I'm a little confused. Why is there a gallery AND a category. Why not categorize everything? But yes, it is easier for us Wikpedians to find photos when they are all together. How do I move a photo from the group at Ancienne_Bruxelles.jpg (above) or even one at a time, of photos to the same musical band that they all belong to? How do I move photos? Can you demonstrate one?

Re: questions edit

Hi! I am a slow learner.

 • OK, being a new uploader, I have in the past month uploaded about 100 images (I do like the Bryan Flickr uploader best). That said, I've uploaded the same image three times (thinking I did something wrong, and so doing it twice more.) And it wasn't the first time. How can I delete the additional uploads of the same photo?
 • When I upload, I use at least two categories. Is it preferable to stick to one? Examples would be: for example, in the American/British band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, (that there was one category that, thankfully, someone before me had established as an actual category-- the name of the band). But I'd also add at least another category for each of them. Like one, Greg Lake, putting Emerson, Lake and Palmer, and ALSO listing "Bass guitarists from the United Kingdom". The other two were also tagged with the Emerson, Lake & Palmer category, but in one case, "Drummers from the United Kingdom", and the other, "Keyboardists from the United Kingdom, too. However, in many of the cases of uploaded photos, like, with a female jazz artist from Azerbaijan, I listed "Female musician", Musician from Azerbaijan, Jazz pianist. So, is it best to list more categories, hoping to hit one that someone will look for to find tnem easier? How to know whether one category is better than one? OR is it best to have more categories? Thus far, I haven't had the time to learn to approach the uploads differently.
 • Last. If I find something in a group, that very much doesn't belong there, how to move it to some other place? And then, Where? Help. Thanks, --Leahtwosaints (talk) 00:17, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Hey, wazzup. Please bookmark this page: Template:Categorise. It is a banner for busy categories. It is used via pasting in categorize or categorise at the top of those category pages. But that is not why I am telling you about it.
Check out the wikilinks in this line of the template:
Search for more categories here and here.
Those wikilinks are very helpful for finding categories. The search page has a checkbox just for searching categories.
As for how many categories to use for an image; the best way is to use the name of the musician or group as the category. Create it if necessary. This way the image itself usually only needs one category.
Then put all the other categories you mentioned as parent categories. See Commons:Categories and Wikipedia:Categorization. Those multiple parent categories are placed on the category page, not the image page.
Images not categorized by the name of the musician or group are less likely to be used on a wikipedia page. They are more difficult to find. Also, it is very interesting to browse such specifically named categories.
You move images by changing the categories.
To delete duplicate images use REASON at the top of the image page. Clearly explain the reason in that REASON space after the vertical bar. Just type in a sentence or short paragraph. An admin will take care of it. Be sure to link to the duplicate image also in that REASON space.
By the way, you might want to put a link to en:User talk:Leahtwosaints on your user and talk pages here on the commons. So that people can contact you on English Wikipedia too. --Timeshifter (talk) 12:39, 8 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi -- another question edit

If I see my uploaded photos in Commons, and have placed them on a page --as with a pic of the Aussie rock band, The Angels, why does Commons still say no page is linked to it? See:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Angels.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Angels_(Australian_band) Is there something I should be doing when uploading them other than putting them into a category? (I use the "Bryan" Flickr upload tool. --leahtwosaints (talk) 09:24, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Greetings again. No, you are fine with just the category. "What links here" on the Commons page only shows what pages incorporate the image on the Commons. Such as galleries. To see what pages use the image on English wikipedia go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:The_Angels.jpg and click on "What links here" from that page. Click:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:WhatLinksHere/File:The_Angels.jpg
There may be some tool that does this for all Wikipedias in all languages. I don't know. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:02, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Also, I was hoping you could walk me through the deleting of those en:Emerson, Lake & Palmer extra uploads? Help? --leahtwosaints (talk) 09:24, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

See the previous talk section where I explain how to delete duplicate images (with different names).
To get rid of duplicate images with the same name (as when uploading new versions of the same image, or when the Flickr upload bot was used multiple times for the same image) ask the admins to delete the duplicates. Ask at the Commons notice boards: Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Attention --Timeshifter (talk) 20:05, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
OK, because when uploading the ELP photos, I didn't know yet how long it took for the pics to show up, so I did it several times, until I realized what I was doing. tHANKS! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 22:35, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I had a similar problem with one of the bot uploaders. --Timeshifter (talk) 17:24, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Red category link edit

At File:Emerson Lake and Palmer.jpg there is Category:Keith Emerson

To get rid of the red link you have to put that category into another existing category such as Category:Musicians. Even better is to put it into a subcategory of Category:Musicians. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:13, 27 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is easier to visualize as a tree:
File:Emerson Lake and Palmer.jpg
Category:Keith Emerson
Category:Musicians
The red link will disappear when someone adds Category:Musicians to the Category:Keith Emerson page, and saves it. For more ideas for categories see the categories listed at the bottom of en:Keith Emerson. --Timeshifter (talk) 19:45, 29 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Completely understandable and I'm willing to roll up my sleeves and place photos in more advanced Categories. I want to see these photos that often I really extend myself to get, and use the Flickr upload called "Bryans tool" or something. On my en.Wikipedia it's listed as item 32 for uploads and once you try certain words, they often have a category, or other distinguishing characteristics, such as Grammy Award winners, where they are from and what instrument, genres, etc. Is there anybody here with the time and patience to teach me to do this? And of course my earliest uploads were blundering messes.. though I got the hang of it.--Leahtwosaints (talk) 18:13, 18 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Another problem edit

Hi, Will you contact me on my Wikipedia talk page? Because when I go and beg for excellent for photographs to upload, the photographers must surrender their copyright. It's not too easy! With some I do promise attribution when I place it on the article itself, when possible. I have four professional photographers who have made their vastly extensive online portfolios available, or change attribution from Flickr. OK, after all that work on my part and theirs, I go to upload, and nothing happens. And not a damn thing is wrong with attribution, and we need the photo. It's not a matter of time, it's some Admin- maybe after noticing my earlier blunders, or it will say, "this photo was deleted before you even got to upload it"! I got so pissed off, I did keep it up that night, over and over, this response without even clicking the little link to his photostram to this fine photographer, French living in Canada, Jean-Luc Ourlin, who donates his photos because now his age and glaucoma has comprimised his vision, but this was of Keith Moon- and after my 3rd try in a row, I was furious, and somehow managed to write, "WHY are you rejecting this?" The Admin. writes, "it looked too good to be real". I mean, WTF? Jean-Luc Ourlin, a great black and white photographer, and finally I got it in and placed it. But I estimate still that a third of my perfectly legal (and needed uploads for pages missing images still have no actual upload. The rest is all there, but not the photo. I have to get devious, as with improving Frank Zappa's page, only one photo was uploaded. This was yesterday. So I changed the title of the photo and only put "Composers from the United States" "Bandleaders", etc. And sure enough, then it worked, if I change the title of the upload to Thatfamousgoatee.jpeg, instead of the original FRANKZAPPA3.jpeg. So what to do?? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 18:21, 18 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Flickr edit

This bot is still working. You need a TUSC account for it to work, and rather than allowing you to add the categories and descriptions during upload you need to edit the page afterwards to add them – but it still beats copy-and-pasting hands down.iridescent 18:51, 21 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, getting a weird string of numbers like that is no problem. Shouldn't Commons want to know what your password IS? I was told to paste it on my talk page and dutifully, I went to my Wikipedia talk page and placed it there, with the password. When I say I am slow.. ever seen a cat that keeps chasing it's own tail? What shall I do with this? --Leahtwosaints (talk) 21:31, 22 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

File:Snow_Patrol_Concert_Melkweg.jpg edit

File:Snow_Patrol_Concert_Melkweg.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hello, Leahtwosaints!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Re: Lisa Fischer edit

Can You link to the image in Flickr? feydey (talk) 18:31, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I can. I had asked the photgrapher through "Flickr Mail" to change the license so we could use it. He changed the license. His name is Hans Eder. Here is the link to the image: [3] Will you help me to resolve this problem? As I said, I've been trying to get a photo of this quality for Lisa Fischer for two years. She has toured with the Rolling Stones on all their tours for almost 20 years and also toured with Luther VanDross and tours with Tina Turner too. Thanks. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 22:32, 8 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Category:Bill Nelson edit

Hi, there seems to be problems with two of your images in that category. For some reasons the files are missing. By the way that's the category from the senator and astronaut Bill Nelson. Are you sure they are at the right place? --myself488 (talk) 15:16, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can't figure out what's going on with categorizing. I've been uploading the photos manually because the "Bryan flickr upload" quit working a few months ago. See my talk page where I was told by an Admin. that this was the best way to upload the photos (same user name in en.wikipedia)-- I can't understand how any of the other uploads from Flickr (the only place I upload photos from --work! If someone could show me, step by step how another works, I'd be grateful. Anyway, each time I do upload photos, the little + sign comes and I add the categories which show up before a "trusted user" comes along, and then they've "disappeared", and are tagged without categories, so I come along behind them and add them, except for two that I had no real idea if any category really covered them (one was Steve Marriott of the Small Faces and Humble Pie; both didn't have categories yet; we still need a category for the Small Faces but I don't know how to do that, either.) About Bill Nelson; I uploaded that photo months ago, maybe a year by now, and I didn't put it in with the astronaut Bill Nelson. Check and see who did that. --Leahtwosaints (talk) 17:03, 9 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Err edit

Just for info - I tweaked an image you uploaded earlier for an ep wp article about a group I know nothing about....:) Thanks for finding the pic - cheers --Herby talk thyme 20:27, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK - the pic was this one. I just lightened it a bit to bring out some more detail. I spotted the edit on en - don't do much there at all now but I have some watchlisted stuff still.
On cats - same as en wp I imagine create a new page Category:What ever you want and that is it really. I guess important is to get that page well categorised so that it is in the cat structure so that it makes sense and others can find it. Drilling down thro stuff of interest here will give you some insight. I imagine this cat might be one to look thro (looks a mess!), ditto this one.
Once you have created appropriate cats then take a look at my preferences -> Gadgets - Tools for categories and enable Hot Cat - it makes cat work much quicker. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:11, 9 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
What do you want doing to the Bowie one? Happy to tweak stuff when I have time.
As to categories you seem to have described it pretty well to me. Find the appropriate parent cat and start creating the tree - it is a wiki - you can just do it :) Regards --Herby talk thyme 13:57, 10 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Happy to help editing images when I have the time and will look at the Bowie one later. However I am not really a collector of other peoples images I afraid - I far prefer taking them myself - so I'll leave that to others.

Equally I don't have time to create categories etc here on Commons, I have a backlog of images to upload here anyway :(. It is quite easy to do - give it a go. And certainly do a Fairport category - they are quite an important influence on much of subsequent folk/rock in the UK (& yes I have seen them and a few that they influenced :)). --Herby talk thyme 10:12, 11 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

+ Bowie one - looking at it I'm not sure it needs anything much removing - I certainly would not crop it as much as you suggest and if anything I'd take a slice off the blackness on the right - ain't taste funny :) --Herby talk thyme 10:15, 11 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Show of Hands edit

You need to read the en page properly :) The issue was with tribute bands - I know Show of Hands exist - I have seen them a fair number of times! I'll look at the image later.

I've lightened it a bit :) --Herby talk thyme 14:10, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I hope I figure out how to create a Category. I didn't even know what email was a few years ago, and I suffer from Attention Deficit Disorder, so longwinded instructions usually get lost someplace along the way... I honestly think the photo I mentioned is one of the very best I've seen, but it isn't worth the bother to even nominate it, and it's not one of mine. Mine are posted in Wikipedia, under another name! :) --Leahtwosaints (talk) 17:55, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
It is a lovely image and it might work but it can be rather harsh at times. What/where are your other images? Regards --Herby talk thyme 13:14, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Take a look here - the instructions are pretty straightforward. I would warn you that the process can appear quite strict and standards are high.

Overwriting images? edit

Not quite sure what the issue is here. You uploaded this image and you are the only uploader - there are no previous versions so no clash with anything else? --Herby talk thyme 12:42, 18 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't get this.
On Commons you will always be warned if you upload an image when there is one of the same name. Yours is the only image of that name - take a look here - no overwriting shown at all so no other image here.
gets you your image. --Herby talk thyme 17:58, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
See my talk page in Wikipedia here
[4] !! --Leahtwosaints (talk) 19:46, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK - I see this issue is not really here on Commons (hence there was no warning about overwriting anything as the other image is not actually here).
Simple really. Upload the image again with whatever name you want on it and then we will tag the other one for speedy deletion as a duplicate. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 09:36, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

File:Donna Jean Godchaux Band.jpg edit

File:Donna Jean Godchaux Band.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

File:Talking_Heads_black_and_white.jpg edit

File:Talking_Heads_black_and_white.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!
