File:TelkomLukasRandTower.JPG edit

File:TelkomLukasRandTower.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

What is he charging at?! edit

A very dramatic photo, indeed! But I'd love to have more information. Might you consider adding some details to the page? Like what he was charging at, and how far he was from you at the time? Maury Markowitz (talk) 23:39, 10 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

It was taken at Rhino and Lion Park in Krugersdorp. It was a young playful leopard who was stalking and then decided to charge for me. Fortunately there was a barrier between me and him. I was about 3m when I took the shot. --Leo za1 (talk) 19:23, 13 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

external links and advertising edit

Hi Rute Martins.

I think you've gone a bit overboard in your promotion of your website on Commons. Your signature must not contain a link to your website -- that's spamming. The English Wikipedia guideline is quite clear on this. The Common's equivalent guideline is little more than a stub and doesn't cover links, but I find it hard to believe the same attitude doesn't apply. You might also want to look at Wikipedia's user pages guideline, which says the page should be about you the Wikipedian (or Wikimedian) rather than your business. So IMHO, the big "Leoa's Photography" title and "~*~ Live the life you love! Love the life you live! ~*~" subtitle make the user page appear too much like your commercial website, and not a Wikimedian's user page. The Common's guideline on galleries, templates and categories says you can have "some advertising" on your user page and template on the image description pages. I'm not sure how to interpret that but something more subtle perhaps? I'm no expert on this and not an admin, so perhaps there are other folk you can ask.

BTW, you are using CC BY-SA and state "You are free to use the image as per the licence instructions on this page." If you read the standard licence box it says "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor". However, you haven't stated how you want to be attributed. Many people use their user template to do this. Alternatively, you can use a field in the image description template to add a credit line (see any of my pics for example). I feel that if we expect people to credit us then we need to help them know how to do it (I've seen images just credited to "Wikimedia" for example). See Commons:Credit line.

Thanks for contributing great pictures with a free licence. Cheers, Colin (talk) 18:47, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Colin, thank you for letting me know as I was not aware of that policy. Is there an easy way of adding the credit line during the upload? --Rute Martins of Leoa's Photography 19:51, 14 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Not with the upload wizard. I just add the extra bits afterwards. The other thing I tend to add by hand is the geolocation (if suitable) see Commons:Geocoding -- I use GeoLocator. But I need to experiment with Lightroom's maps to see if I can just get this embedded in my EXIF to begin with.
I still feel that having "of Leoa's Photography" in your sig is a bit spammy. Folk have plenty opportunity to locate your website via your user page or image description pages, I don't see why your business should be mentioned every time you discuss something on Commons (like FPC votes). It may even count against you wrt FPC nominations if it rubs someone up the wrong way. Cheers, Colin (talk) 12:47, 15 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi,

Your VFC installation method is deprecated edit

Hello Leo za1, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:24, 22 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
