Mr.chickenchaser! edit

In my opinion it's not worth the trouble to warn vandals like Mr.chickenchaser. I've taken care of the problem. Thanks though. ~MDD4696 04:46, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

No problem. -- Mentifisto 04:55, 13 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Er, you just need to explain in the edit summary why you removed that content. -- Mentifisto 22:50, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
I hope an administrator will explain that to you. Have you checked the categories? Be honest !! 92.230.92.38 22:58, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I admit the categories look like they've got nothing to do with the image, so I reverted it, but as I said, explaining it in the edit summary is the best whenever you edit anything. -- Mentifisto 23:04, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
You should first think, before you are doing anything here. But giving that note on my disc is impertinent. Do do that again. Good night. 92.230.92.38 23:24, 24 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Image licensing edit

File:Windbreaker Adidas.jpg just showed up on en.wikipedia and I see you reviewed it. I'm curious: Although the Flickr image claims to be Creative Commons, the original source is not Flickr and doesn't seem to give any indication of a free license. The name of the Flickr uploader is not the same as the Etsy merchant, and they don't even appear to be in the same country (snappyfishvintage is in Vancouver, BC, and BitchBuzz is in Kingston Upon Thames in the UK). Is there some publicly verifiable indication that the Flickr uploader has the rights to the image? Thanks! Kafziel (talk) 17:27, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

No, not that I know of. :-S All those hundreds of uploads must be incorrectly licensed as cc-by, then. I'm not sure what's usually done on Flickr if anything to fix mislabelling. -- Mentifisto 17:42, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure either. I'm always leery of Flickr for just that reason. Anyway, thanks very much for the quick action. Kafziel (talk) 18:21, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Descriptions edit

Please write descriptions that actually describe the image in a useful manner. When you do stuff like you did at File:Slightly far away.jpg, you create a lot of unnecessary detective work for someone else. If it hadn't been for the clue in the name of File:Dunn fell radar station.jpg that you also uploaded I wouldn't have stood a chance. - Jmabel ! talk 04:12, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would, but I'm not sure about most of the subjects' specifics. :-| -- Mentifisto 05:38, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
Also, thanks for your help there. -- Mentifisto 05:41, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy delete a talk page? edit

Hi I see you added a Speedy tag to a Talk Page? Surely all that's needed is to revert the vandalism? SiGarb (talk) 16:56, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

If I remember correctly it was the only revision available, and deleting a page is more 'proper' than just blanking. -- Mentifisto 04:15, 3 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Lofty abyss, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Please don't delete these kind of files. You probably noticed the message Error creating thumbnail: Invalid thumbnail parameters or PNG file with more than 12.5 million pixels. That's because we currently don't render images more than 12.5 million pixels because of performance issues, but we might do that in the future. Multichill (talk) 14:04, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine edit

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. And since you are the experts please join us at this very important discussion -- MaenK.A.Talk 14:23, 20 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

New Page Patrol - Maria jose merida peña edit

If you delete a new page, it is removed from the New Page Patrol log automatically. If you move it, it is not, and, since the page no longer exists, it will remain in the log until someone recreates it, marks it patrolled, and then deletes it. The easy solution is leave behind the redirect and then delete the redirect....      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 10:43, 18 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Clean snow edit

I'd like to let you know that I've decided to place the photo Clean_snow.jpg on the front cover of the action-adventure novel that I've written. With that in mind, I want to ask you your real name so I can attribute you properly on the copyright page, as I'm required to do by the terms of the Creative Commons license. (If you'd rather not give me that info, I can still credit you as "Wikipedia user Mentifisto", but I think that would be out of place). Thanks! -- Danny 67.169.177.176 06:56, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

@Danny, you should not urge another user to publicly disclose his real name. Better offer him an opportunity to contact you or contact him directly per email from his userpage. --Túrelio (talk) 07:08, 25 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Protection of Template:2010POTY edit

Hi, is it a joke to protect the incomplete manual for the 2010POTY? The manual is fatally incomplete: if your browser does not automatically add your name, you are stuck! In german version (as main-template-version is not editable) I addet point 4 as follows: if your name does not appear on the list automatically, follow the instructions (mentioned with link) to add it manually. Can you please give free again the main template - or tell anyone who has editing-rights to add the solution to that problem in all versions! Thanks --ProloSozz (talk) 12:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

It's only semi-protected, and from what I can see you are auto-confirmed. Are you sure you can't edit it? (What kind of message do you get?) -- Mentifisto 17:00, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
ProloSozz, what you want is not edit that template (which you can, btw, because is only semiprotected). What you want is edit Template:2010POTY/Finalistsheader/en to add the 4th point who is here Template:2010POTY/Finalistsheader/de. That you can do because none of those pages are protected. Best regards, Béria Lima msg 17:27, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
If I remember correctly, I could not edit it - or I could edit it, but there was nothing to edit, just a referrer to another template - and I am told that it is (fully) protected. I edited the german template - where I am told not to edit the german template, but to edit here ... After editing german template, it did not show my changes. Very confusing and very obscure where to edit what ... But for now it is fixed, and there are the instructions to the workaround of the problem I had. ... PS: it was me to have added the 4th point in the german version (but it was not visible)! --ProloSozz (talk) 20:51, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open edit

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Code issues in User:Mentifisto/common.js edit

Hi Mentifisto, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Mentifisto/common.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 3 new jshint issues — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!
  1. ISSUE: line 1 character 1: Expected an identifier and instead saw '#'. - Evidence: #mw.loader.load('http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Mentifisto/global.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');

De-adminship warning edit

This talk page in other languages:

Dear Lofty abyss, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2015 within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons! edit

Dear Lofty abyss

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC edit

Hello Lofty abyss,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,
