Image deletion warning Image:Golden Gate sign.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hi Mav

Just to say you 'Bravo !' for your photos on Egypt. Very fine and nice shots, especially those of Cairo museum garden and of Memphis small open-air museum.

I put more categories on some of them or correct other. Hope it will not disturb you...

Regards Neithsabes (talk) 00:00, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - I'll check everything again after I'm done to make sure everything is in the right category. I generally start off with a general category when uploading but then find more specific categories afterward. --Mav (talk) 00:03, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
 • Comment Neithsabes (Sebi) is very good at correctly cataloging images, I notice. He quickly added a catalogue (which I missed) for this image of Psusennes I's funerary mask which is usually in the Cairo Museum but was 'on loan' for an exhibition in France when the photo was taken: Image:Psusennes I mask by Rafaèle.jpg I've mostly done with uploading pictures to Commons for Neithsabes to catalogue. Cheers, --Leoboudv (talk) 07:10, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks ! edit

Hi Mav

Thank you for your comment. Feel free to use it for the english wikipedia section ; some of them have english description but may be i made errors in my translation.

Tell me what you think about and if it's the case then i will correct them and upload a new correct version.

Cheers. Neithsabes (talk) 22:46, 2 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

File:Plutonium pellet.jpg edit

If you have a question about the specific origin of an image, please feel free to ask the uploader. Don't just replace it with a totally different image. That's not even good practice even if it was a bad image.

I got that image directly from the DOE. I have updated it with the source link that shows it is from DOE, though there is no online link to the high-res version. That required me sending some e-mails and etc.

Note that eliminating my high-res one for a very low-res one not only is not very helpful to Commons, but also invalidates a lot of work I did on behalf of Commons to get a good image! --Fastfission (talk) 19:52, 10 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

The burden on proof is on the uploader to provide sufficient evidence that an image conforms to the copyright tag they place. When an image lacks basic source info it can and should be removed. Doing otherwise could put the project in legal trouble. That said, I should have followed-up on my actions by notifying you. For that I apologize. But the image still has inadequate source information that needs to be provided. --mav
It's not my fault their website doesn't allow direct linking. The image ID is accurate, the copyright information is accurate if sparse. The data page says:
Image ID: 2006407

Caption: PLUTONIUM-238 SPHERE UNDER ITS OWN LIGHT. Program Category: Defense Photo Date: Site:

Credit: DOE Photo Keywords: INTERIOR, ,

search for "plutonium AND light" and it comes up. --Fastfission (talk) 22:49, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nobody is blaming you for the shortcomings of any website. Viewers of the image simply needed more info here on how to find information about the image on the source website. You have now provided it by telling the viewer what to search for. Thank you. --mav

Tip: Categorizing images edit

Hello, Mav!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Gray_Wolf_in_Grand_Teton_NP-NPS.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Usage requirements for the Texas State Capitol Building image edit

hi Mav,

We are interested in using this image as one of several primary "hero" images on the home page of a web site. It would appear occasionally.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Texas_State_Capitol_building-front_left_front_oblique_view.JPG

Do you require an "attribute" to use this image? If yes, can you please specify exactly what you would require in order to use this image?

Thank you. Am also sending you an email.

Jack

This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Liquid Oxygen.gif. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Liquid Oxygen.gif) and the above demanded information in your request.
