First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Could you help me with some arabic reading?

It's a picture of what I belive is baptize among the people we in Norwegian call mandearar on ar:مندائية (the second picture on that page). Is it possible to use the picture on nn:mandearar? Could you please help me translating the text and the license on this picture - and maybe also on the first picture on that page? mvh Knut the preceding unsigned comment is by 88.88.144.31 (talk • contribs)

Hi. In the Arabic article the two images are not tagged with a license and the source is not mentioned so they should be deleted! The second image is an image representing Baptism as you said. The caption of the first image is الدرفش المندائي. I don't know the exact translation of الدرفش. However, it is translated sometimes as: The Cross. المندائي is the Arabic adjective of Mandaeism. Please see en:Mandaeism. Thank you for your message. Sorry if I didn't help you much. --Meno25 09:09, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Thanks anyway, for you answer. Maybe somone arabicspeaking could ask for a licensing of the pictures, and upload them on Commons. The fotos have good colors, and would have done well illustrating our article about Mandaeism (norw.language). With regards Knut, Norway the preceding unsigned comment is by 88.88.144.31 (talk • contribs)
Hi, again. The uploader of the two images is موهند (his Arabic Wkipedia user page, his Arabic Wikipedia talk page). If you want to contact a local administrator in Arabic Wikipedia, I suggest Menasim (his commons user page, his Arabic Wikipedia user page, his Arabic Wikipedia user talk page). (Despite the fact that I am a former administrator in the Arabic Wikipedia, yet I don't contribute there currently, so, I can't help you more.) If you want any additional help, just leave me a message. Thank you for trying to make Wikipedia a better encyclopedia! --Meno25 13:03, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Can you help

Hi Meno, I am the only Arabic specking admin on commons, and I think we need another ar.wiki admin to work here with me. It will make arranging the relation between ar wiki and commons much easier as you have admin there. You have been active for some time on commons, and it seems you already know your way around here. Do you mind if I nominate you for admin ship here on commons. --Tarawneh 00:13, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Tarawneh. Sorry, but I am really busy these days. I can't help now. Thanks anyway and I am very pleased to see you here. --Meno25 11:22, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Images with no license

Hi,

you tagged some images by me because of a missing license. I added GFDL but they were tagged again. Don't know why. Cheers, Messor the preceding unsigned comment is by Messor structor (talk • contribs)

Hi, Messor and welcome to Commons. The images are just fine now. You have tagged them with GFDL. You probably forgot to add the licenses when uploading images. See you. --Meno25 00:29, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
ah, ok ... but how do I add license? why isn't tagging enough? Messor structor 05:51, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
Surely tagging is enough. You can select a license from the drop down menu at Special:Upload or you can tag the image manually by adding the code GFDL-self (or any other license) to the image description page. You can read Commons:Copyright tags for more information. --Meno25 09:04, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Moving my user page

Hi Meno25, I am sorry I did not know..there are still many things I need to learn. But I am enjoying my participation.--Nasib Bitar 03:38, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Subcategory

Dear Meno,

thank you for your contribution. I have moved your picture to a suitable subcategory, because the category Mathematics (like all big categories) should be free from medias. Best regards, Darapti. the preceding unsigned comment was added by Darapti (talk • contribs)

Thank you, sir. I appreciate your help. --Meno25 20:54, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Info templates

What is the point of adding info templates to pages without them if you do it in the slipshod way it was done on page Image:اسمي.gif?? You didn't add the "date" to the Date: field, and though authorship information was contained on the page, you left the Author: field blank, thereby moving the image into the "Media without a description" category, though there's no evidence it should be in that category. AnonMoos 17:47, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Dude, please do not add Information templates to a page such as Image:State Religions.png in such a way that relevant information already present in the page is not slotted into the relevant slots, and please do not add Information templates to a page in a way that the "nosource" category is added to an image, unless there's relevant specific grounds to believe that the image is in fact lacking a source. AnonMoos 17:51, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I had some problems when using the script. This error will not be repeated. Thank you for your comment. --Meno25 19:28, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry if I was rather abrupt, but the Category "Images lacking source information" should only be added to an image page as the result of human consideration (since this is tantamount to requesting that the image should be deleted), and should NOT be entrusted to the vagaries of an automated script firing at a rate of thirty times a minute. Unless you have a quick way of reverting all cases where Category "Images lacking source information" was added to an image by an automated script (as opposed to direct human intervention), then cleaning up behind the mess you made is going to be somewhat tedious... AnonMoos 23:06, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Done. I have rechecked all images and made the necessary corrections/fixes when appropriate. I hope this resolves this issue. Thank you again for your comments. --Meno25 02:42, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Image:Dirigible Hangar at Moffett Field.jpg

I just requested that Image:Dirigible Hangar at Moffett Field.jpg be deleted as it is a smaller version of Image:Hangar One at Moffett Field 1963.jpg ( fussed some over the categories -- if you think that there are better category, feel free to add or change those). You can contest this or you can change it to Hangar One at Moffett Field 1963.jpg which would expedite its deletion, or you can also download the larger version and upload it 'atop' of your version -- except that I just changed every page that was linked to it, so you should probably also change those as well.

That is a great photograph, btw. -- carol 11:56, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Carol. I have uploaded the image from the English Wikipedia without noticing that it already exists on Commons. Its description page didn't state that it was already moved to Commons. Thank you for your note. --Meno25 21:33, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
I really left this mention with no sarcasm, and not because I have no sarcasm left to leave.... The software detects duplicates if the name is the same. If the categories are different, then there is no set way of finding duplicates. Also, in all honesty, there have been several duplicates that I have uploaded -- and this is of the ones I know about. Then there might the situation where a group of people cleaned and improved the images, but did not use them in as many articles as the duplicate was used on and did not take the time to categorize them with anything but their own group name. I opted not to get into an edit war yesterday at de.wikipedia with just that same situation. So, please understand, the upload of duplicates is no place for me to have any sarcasm about and listing your options was interesting to me to reread before saving. So, all in all a nice experience. -- carol 21:49, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Image:Aphid colony.jpg

I just did the same thing with Aphid colony.jpg I saw that image recently while looking for aphid images. Interestingly enough, I could find no duplicate upload of Image:Aphid group2.jpg. That one looks like those contests leaving their duplicates everywhere. I am about to take the image off from your gallery and I went ahead and used the badname template. -- carol 22:28, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, Carol again. I upload a lot of images from the English Wikipedia, so, there is a chance that I upload a few duplicate images (images that are already on Commons under a different name or have been moved here without deleting them from the English Wikipedia) and Happy New Year (although very very late!). --Meno25 00:08, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
It is a stupid time to have a new year, in my opinion -- but same to you! -- carol 03:58, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Image:Map of Auckland.jpg

Hi Meno25, Happy New Year 2008!

If I remember correctly, the image Image:Map of Auckland.jpg came from the English Wikipedia. Since you're an admin there, could you please tell me who was the original uploader, and if a source was provided? Thank you, Korg 23:43, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Happy New year to you too! The original uploader is WhisperToMe. Unfortunately the source isn't stated in the history of the image at the English Wikipedia. The following is a copy of the image description page as of 14:34, 31 July 2005 by you:
1888 German map of Auckland
PD

If you needed any further help regarding any deleted image there, don't hesitate to ask me. Thanks. --Meno25 23:57, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! I've contacted WhisperToMe, and the issue is being resolved. Regards, Korg 02:30, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Bot source

Hi Meno25, commonscat is part of the pywikipedia package. You can view the source here. The code to add links here at commons is not ready yet. TarHippo has also shown interest (see here and here). It looks to me like we should first decide how an interwiki bot should update the links here and than implement it. Commons:Bots/Requests#Interwiki robot suggestion seems a good place to talk this over. Multichill (talk) 08:51, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Native name

Hi Meno25

I see you renamed with the right name in arabic writing, two page that i have created a long time ago  :

Why don't you let the original name of these two pages? They are not categories but pages from my own work. All french people don't speak english or arabic and then would not find them. That's why i created these pages and translated them in english (by the way if you see errors in this translation, please feel free to correct them). What do you think about two page with in french english and arabic name? It would be encyclopedic, isn't it?

Thanks for your answer.

Greetings. Neithsabes (talk) 23:33, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Sebi. Noting the fact that COM:LP is still a proposal, I see no harm in reverting back to the French name. Best wishes. --Meno25 (talk) 14:10, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
HI Memo25.
Well, i propose we change the name again - no reverting back. When there is a an adding, a new contribution, i always think that we have to progress in our articles (except foolish things of course!!). I find that they miss a translation in Arabic indeed.
We could have an arabic and french (or english) title, and texts could be translated in arabic later. If you have time to see this last point, please feel free to add it. It will be great to learn more in this way! Neithsabes (talk) 20:04, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
Hi again. I don't think that adding the Arabic name besides the French/English name is a good idea. I don't think that the page title will be rendered correctly in this case because of the bracket. I guess that the best solution would be to translate image descriptions to Arabic. I will work on them when I finish uploading the rest of free images from Arabic Wikipedia. Thank you, Sebi, for your message. --Meno25 (talk) 19:47, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

red links

You weren't suppose to remove all those red links for /lang templates!! :) They were put there to encourage translations. Otherwise, there's no need for /lang pages at all. (The links can be called by Lang links). If I knew you were going to do that, I would of put that template in all templates with translations. We would never have to add any. And never see a red link. Oh well. Rocket000 (talk) 18:23, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Meno25, I was looking for an Arabic speaker because of Special:Contributions/محسن_عبدالهی. Could you check these files and see if the permissions are ok? (I guess they are not.) But there is no "GNU (whatever)" text string on that website as far as I can see. -- \mu/ 08:08, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

The quality of the chemical structure Image:AcidAmien Saif.JPG is disputed

Dispute notification The chemical structure Image:AcidAmien Saif.JPG you uploaded has been tagged as and is now listed in Category:Low quality chemical diagrams. Images in this category might be deleted after one month if there is no upload of an improved version, if there is no objection from the uploader or other users and if a better version exists. Please discuss on the image talk page if you feel that the dispute is inappropriate. If you agree with the dispute, you can either upload an improved version or simply allow the image to be deleted.

In all cases, please do not take the dispute personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! --NEUROtiker  19:33, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

JPG is a file format well-suited for photographs, but with diagrams as well as structural formulae (both of which usually have high contrasts) the lossy compression leads to compression artifacts. Lossless formats such as PNG or SVG are much better for these kind of images. If you have the possibility, please reupload your images as PNG or SVG. File talk:Leesplenkske vaan de Mestreechter Taol.JPG

Your excuse for deletion ("Talk page of deleted or nonexistent content") is ambiguous, if you delete a talk page you can know (and, IMHO, you should know) whether it was the talk page of either deleted or nonexistent content. Nonexistent content seldom makes it to my watchlist and, indeed, this was the talk page of deleted content. In fact the content was deleted citing the talk page as a reason ("User request: as per uploader on image talkpage: This file needs to be deleted. I uploaded this a while ago whilst I was not up-to-date about copyright situations. I do not own this, but an organisation does. LightPhoenix (Diskussion) 12:37, 14 July 2009"). Perhaps you have a good reason why you think that only administrators should to able to check the reason for that deletion, but you did not provide one. Could you please explain why you used your time to make uncontroversial (well, I thought it was uncontroversial) text unreachable? Erik Warmelink (talk) 21:15, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Help :-)

Hi, I am trying to find someone with good Arabic and English that can help me communicate with a user on ar-wikipedia and commons. I am just trying to find out from User:Latifahphysics who is also ar:نقاش_المستخدم:Latifahphysics whether he/she understands that one can use math-TeX directly on wiki pages rather than uploading lots of math-TeX generated images onto Commons. See Commons:Deletion requests/File:4.png and my note on their talk page. Possibly there is some problem or other reason they continue to upload images that are just generated from TeX formulas. Can you help me communicate? Thanks :-). --Tony Wills (talk) 05:44, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
