If you want your images assessed on QI edit

At the very first:

Thanks for your contributions!

But, please never remove any comments of your collegues, except when these are personell offendings (which it wasn´t). Even then ask an administrator to do this. I respond on this edit from you where you obviously misinterpreted what Jebulon says. [[User:Jebulon|Jebulon] was speaking about an doubtful license, not a doubtful quality, even when he is not completely convinced about the picture. Therefore he asked for additional opinions.

By the way, welcome on QI! And of course, we all are photografer professionals too, what else? Some are more professional, some are less. As always.--Hubertl (talk) 17:06, 12 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Kenkyusha’s New Japanese-English Dictionary 5th Edition with page open.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Kenkyusha’s New Japanese-English Dictionary 5th Edition with page open.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Hi, Nubero. You asked, why the file has been nominated for deletion / needs permission. Commons collects only those photos, which are free for use even for commercial purposes and also free for modifying. Fair use is prohibited in Commons. But some local projects, for example, English wikipedia, allow fair use.

The file is derivative work of two pages from dictionary. Publishing company owns copyright to the book. The text is in full resolution readable in English and in Japanese as well. Without OTRS-permission from publishing company, Commons cannot host it.

What about uploading the same photo with smaller resolution, so that the text is not readable? That case page format still remains. But you can argue, that the page format is trivial for dictionaries, nothing new in page format here, the page format does not surpass threshold of originality. If this is the case, then the file can remain in Commons. There are 12 maps also on left page, but fortunately they are all ineligible for copyright.

Why the copyright violation was not discovered earlier? Who knows ... Here are too few people who care about copyright. Every day ten thousand new photos are uploaded into Commons, every day two thousand photos are deleted. I have discovered copyright violations, which have been in Commons more than 7 years, which have been in English wikipedia main page, which are used in more than thousand pages. It's sad, but it happens. Taivo (talk) 20:00, 13 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks @Taivo this is useful. I am pretty sure now that I stepped into the trap that is the difference between fair use on Wikipedia and the apparent non-existance of it here. I will upload a smaller version. I should have come in contact with people like you first before I came in contact with certain others here it now seems. Thanks again. --Nubero (talk) 22:56, 13 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
You uploaded smaller version, but the text is still readable. I looked resolution 1200×1024 and this is borderline case, it's better not to take a risk. 960×768 is in my opinion safe. @Yann, are you agree with that resolution? Taivo (talk) 07:59, 14 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Blurring would be better than reducing the size. Regards, Yann (talk) 08:11, 14 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
