Hello, Palamède!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Reflections on structures by country has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Bonjour.

Henri Duponchel edit

Greetings Palamède!

I noticed your very nice pictures of the Bibliothèque de l'Opéra Garnier, e.g., File:Bibliothèque de l'Opéra Garnier (Paris, France)..JPG. Thank you for taking this picture and sharing it at Wikimedia Commons.

On the English and French Wikipedias we have articles about Henri Duponchel, a former director of the Opéra in the 19th century, but our portrait picture is not very high quality, since it ultimately derives from a Google Books scan of a reproduction in a book. According to some sources, the original oil (by Lépaulle) is on display in the Garnier Opera Library and Museum. Should you ever have the opportunity, it would be really great to have a good high-resolution photo of the original portrait. (By the way, he is sometimes referred to as Edmond or Edmond Henri. As far as we know he never himself used the name Edmond.)

According to Gérard Fontaine's Charles Garnier's Opéra: Architecture and Interior Decor, there is also a bust of him on display in the east corridor outside the auditorium at the level of the first lodges (couloir des premières lodges, buste 22). In the corridors and public spaces of the Garnier house there are busts of many other persons associated with the Opéra, for some of whom we do not have any images. For example, we do not currently have an image of the stage decorator Charles-Antoine Cambon (buste 35 in the Rotonde du Glacier, also on the east side). There are probably many other examples. We currently have the Category:Busts of Palais Garnier, but as of this moment, all the images are of busts on the exterior of the building. It may be difficult to get good pictures of busts on the interior. Lighting is always a problem.

Anyway, these are just suggestions for possible images currently lacking at Commons. Thanks again for your contributions and best regards, --Robert.Allen (talk) 00:50, 6 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Photo challenge... edit

Bon weekend. --Llann .\m/ (Lie 2 me ...) 16:11, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Bon. Il me semblait que la formulation ("one contrasting pair of subjects (comparative concept) Big and small, thick and thin, fat and skinny, long and short... ") autorisait une certaine liberté. Peut-être en ai-je abusé en effet. Bonne continuation.

Bonne participation, cordialement, VIGNERON (talk) 06:59, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Can you help edit

I noticed that you did an edit on Category:Books to be categorised by country yesterday. I am cleaning up Book Cats of all kinds. Especially ones where there are up to thousands of incomplete uploads such as the above mentioned Category most are in Category:Books by year. Should there even be single images in the above Category? They are not books. They are just photos and scans and pdf's and djvu files. If User:Fae's Bot Script did a better job they would be in a major book category already and not dumped at Category:Books to be categorised by country. If it had done a better Bot job all those 22,000 images would be the Book Cats to be cleaned up. It is my opinion that all these single images be deleted . Can I have your opinion if you have any say in major Commons matters? Thanks WayneRay (talk) 18:34, 11 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Your changes to categories for French regions edit

Hello, Palamède. I noticed that you added some things to categories that don't belong there. An example is this change to Category:Weather and climate in Auvergne where you added the following:

  • {{Countries of Europe|prefix=:Category:Weather and climate in|suffix=by region}}: since this category is for a region, not a country, this template doesn't help.
  • {{Cat see also|Weather and climate in France by department}}: Since this category was for an individual region, not for all the regions, it also doesn't help here.
  • {{MetaCat|region|topic=Weather and climate|topic2=France}}: this category is not a metacategory, so this template should not be used.

The things you added would be appropriate on Category:Weather and climate in France by region, but not on the categories for the individual regions. Please do not add these to the categories for the individual regions. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:05, 8 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Overcategorization edit

Hi Palamède, you put images in Category:Restaurants in Basse-Normandie also into Category:Restaurants in Normandie where the former category is already a sub-category. Example: [2]. This is in violation of COM:OVERCAT and you should undo this. Kind regards, AFBorchert (talk) 13:35, 1 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for my very bad english. Regions of France are changing. It is usefull to have old (ie Bassse-Normandie here) and new categories (Normandie here) at the same time during this (long?) change. We have to make sure that no mistakes are done in moving categories (ie verify by other users). It is also the case for other categories and other regions of France. But "Basse Normandie" will desapear as soon as possible. Kind regards.Palamède (talk) 06:49, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi Palamède, please pardon me for not writing in French. Your English is surely better than my French. But please feel free to respond in French if this is easier for you. I can read French texts, it is just hard for me to respond in French.
Thank you for pointing out that Basse-Normandie is no longer an administrative unit. I did not know that and from fr:Basse-Normandie I learn that Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie were fusioned on 1 January 2016. Nonetheless I think that such a major reorganization requires a discussion at COM:CFD. See, it is not uncommon to keep using traditional geographic regions even when they are no longer administrative units. In Ireland, we have Category:County Dublin which is still used despite being administratively split into the city of Dublin, and the modern counties of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal and South Dublin. In Northern Ireland, we have since ages no administrative counties but Category:County Fermanagh etc. continue to be the used. The reason behind this is that nearly all scientific works for Ireland continue to use the traditional 32 counties as geographic divisions of the island. We have similar approaches for other countries as well. Take Category:East Frisia for example which is a region of the state of Lower Saxony with no administrative function (which it had in the past). In summary, we should follow the literature, not the ever-changing reorgs by the politicians. And on my table I've a work Les vitraux de Basse-Normandie, and there exists a similar work of the Corpus Vitrearum for Haute-Normandie and so many other traditional regions of France. There are so many other works which focus on these old regions like Basse-Normandie that we should hesitate before we quickly abandon them here at Commons in our category system. There is no problem with keeping categories for Nomandie with sub-categories for Basse- and Haute-Normandie. However, if you are still convinced that we have to abandon the old regions, please open a discussion first to get input from others before investing too much work in a reorganization of our categorization system. Thanks & regards, AFBorchert (talk) 19:29, 2 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Writers by name edit

Dear Palamède, You started this Category:Writers from the Netherlands to be categorised by name, and filled it with 470 images. I didn't like the category, because it hinders a clear structure and makes searching more difficult by placing files that could be placed in 1 category in 2 or even 3 categories. You did the same with Category:Writers from France to be categorised by name (880 files) -as with other countries. I see you are now creating a Category:Writers from the Switzerland by name. Is it possible to first finish off the categories in Category:Writers to be categorised by name, by either returning these files to their old category or by making categories for all these different writers (and filling them with only 1 photograph)? I sincerely hope you will clean up the mess yourself, and not leave that to others. I ask this because your categorization is not helpful in this way, and only creating difficulties. (And I see that these categories are also under discussion at the moment.) Vysotsky (talk) 15:26, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Categorisation edit

Dear Palamède, It looks as if you dislike useful categories like Writers from the Netherlands. You moved several photographs from this category to the category Writers from the Netherlands by type, which is both not logical and not useful. If you want to do so nonetheless, please start a discussion first. I will change the items back to their original category. Vysotsky (talk) 07:45, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open! edit

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear Palamède,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,

Hello, Palamèdeǃ I wonder why you keep changing the gender for File:Alexander Alvina Chamberland.jpg? Alexander Alvina Chamberland is not female, and can therefore not be categorised as such. Best regardsǃ /Sofie Sigrinn (talk) 21:06, 11 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Alexander Alvina Chamberland is non-binary (not a she and not a he), so as long as we don't have "Non-binary writers from" then "Writers from" is the category most suited I guess. (But the category "Writers from Sweden" together with the category "Non-binary people" does the same work.) :) /Sofie Sigrinn (talk) 10:19, 12 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Statue de Saint Goustan (Vallée des Saints), profil.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Bus stops as buildings edit

Bonjour, tu as ajouté la catégorie "Buildings in..." aux catégories "Bus stops in...".

--Birdie (talk) 08:20, 5 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Archange saint Michel edit

Tu as créé la Category:Statues of Saint Joseph and Jesus Christ as a baby in in Aveyron, erronée puisque tu as doublé la mention « in ».

Please ask for deletion of new made categories with an error edit

Dear Palamède, In November you made several new categories with a typo, error. That may happen. You made new categories, now with the correct names. Good! But you forgot one thing: to ask for deletion of the error categories. This can be done as follows: go to the tab "Edit"/"Modifier", add at the top: {{speedydelete|reason}} and fill in the right reason (Like: category is empty, made a mistake). Publish your changes. That is all. A moderator will soon delete this catory. --JopkeB (talk) 14:00, 25 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
