Tip: Categorizing images edit
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]][[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Kikko is a type of Japanese (samurai) armor made from small iron or hardened leather hexagon plates. Kikko is a lightweight portable folding (tatami) armor and is the Japanese version of brigandine. The kikko was attached to clothing by sewing the kikko to cloth through holes drilled through the kikko, or the kikko could be sewn between two layers of cloth and hidden from sight by sewing around each individual piece of kikko and enclosing the kikko in individual compartments. The kikko could be attached to each other by links of chain (kusari) through holes drilled in the kikko. Kikko was used in traditional armor (kikko gusoku) and kikko armored clothing was also made. Kikko armor was made for every class of samurai, from high level to low level.

With 130 images the Chainmail-Category had grown relatively large. All the images I removed from this category, can easily be found in the Chainmail-Subcategory "Japanese chain mail". - Of course there is no such a thing as a limit of images for any category. It´s more a matter of common sense to make categories as user friendly as possible - therefore a different category for "Japanese chain mail" - and there is no need to put the very same images in the overlaying category "Chainmail". I agree with you that historical chainmail should be separated from all kinds of modern ones - why not create a category "Historical chainmail" and leave all the others in the "Chainmail"-category ? depicts a SAMURAI; therefore it belongs in the category of samurai images.
being commercial art does not make it either more, or less "historic"; it is a taisho-era popular culture depiction of a samurai warrior on horseback, framed with several samurai weapons.
it is also a (woodblock) print, & an antique; therefore "historical prints of samurai". i admit that the "samurai" category could use further organization, feel free to improve the sub-categorizations.
BUT please stop de-listing this file from a category in which it clearly belongs.

Hello! Why include in category Armour of Russia illustration of helmets, if exists categories Military helmets of Russia and Russian medieval helmets? And what for add there not russian origin armour, for example 1 - West Europe, 2 - Georgia? In my opinion, this category must contain only russian-made armours.

- OK. In russian weaponology, bardiche is special type of pole weapons, because it have two points of fixing to handle (not one, as axe). One-handed flails have name «kisten'» («кистень» - russian), «kiścień» (polish), «kistän» («кистән» - tatar). This weapon hardly ever has chain, usually leather strap. Hey samuraiantiqueworld, I am writing to you here because I was not sure you would get a message on Wikipedia. I am having some difficulties currently on Wikipedia and could use your help. I recently found out that you were blocked, if I was aware of what was happening I would have supported you unfortunately I was just an occasional Wiki user and was anon at the time. I went over the details of your block and it is perfectly obvious that you were set up by the people who supported your block, the ones from FA especially (you know who I am referring to). The person who caused this in the first place (b rabbit) has been BANNED!! were you aware of this? I did some digging and found that the admin (deathstar) who banned you had dealings with members of the group before and after you were banned, this does not seem right, a non involved admin should have been making the decision. I do not understand why you have not appealed your block, there is no way you would not be unblocked, I can see that you did nothing to provoke the vicious attack that substituted as a discussion when you were blocked. As a side note I have been accused of being a sock puppet of you by some editors who want to make significant changes to the kabuto article, this article and the rest of the Japanese armor and weapons articles that you created and or worked on are the best reference materials in the world that I know of, I think removing the images would ruin the value of the articles and have protested that type of editing. Also one of the same editors is trying to change the name of the jutte article to jitte, I know that there is a separate weapon called jitte, I was wondering if you have any images that you would post on commons (thats the help I need).Darkness walks (talk) 03:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
- Hello Darkness, I have had no intention of editing again on Wiki, its full of cretins and trolls with no real knowledge of the subjects that they editing. I much prefer to work on Wiki commons, its much more civilized. Thanks for your comments, I am sure that I would eventually be unblocked it I did appeal but your information is interesting, I will look into that when I get a chance. I see what is happening on Wiki, konja is very obsessive and rude, and also completely wrong, a gunto is a machine made blade, very frowned upon in nihonto circles, I would have removed the image as well, how could anyone tell what kind of sword that is, it may as well be a German sword, all you can tell is that it is a sword. As for jutte and jitte, they are two separate weapons. Older references often use jitte for all weapons of that type but since there is a weapon called jitte it would be problematic to call two weapons by that name. A jitte is a collapsible hand held parring weapon with a shear like point, I cant remember if I have an image of one available, I will have to look. There is a "Koto period" when it comes to swords, its right there in the reference, konja again is wrong, and on the karuta article it is linked to the Wiki article. - Hello Darkness, problem solved, I already had an image of a jitte uploaded, it was incorrectly labeled as a marohoshi, research shows that the marohoshi had a hinge at the blade allowing the blade to fold as well as the guard, it is now called a karakuri jitte which comes from p.36 of Serge Mol's book "Classical Weapons of Japan". A standard jitte did not fold so it did not have a stopper, this one has the folding hand guard and stopper, hope this helps, I will create a new category called "Jitte" and a sub category for the karakuri jitte.samuraiantiqueworld (talk) 06:51, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

The indefinite block of your account was unnecessarily agressive and I am not surprised you are upset, anyone would be. Hi, I can see you are making some filenames in Category:Images from LACMA uploaded by Fæ more accurate, though in recent examples you have dropped the LACMA name and accession number from the name. Could you keep this in please? The format of the batch uploads, including the accession number as the only unique number we have for each artefact, is as agreed by community consensus at Commons:Batch_uploading/Los_Angeles_County_Museum_of_Public_Art. Hello, "Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts" By Donn F. Draeger, Robert W. Smith published in 1980 uses "tjabang" and not "cabang" so I am not the "only person". If you feel this strongly then open a discussion on the talk page and post some references.

Humbolt, this is not wikipedia....it is wikimedia commons. Whatever name in english makes finding images easier for people to find is what I go with...native terms are not always the best.

Hello! How can i explain the reason for any rotation request? This is the 1st time i use this tool. Anyway the reason is because some Wikipedias have a problem making the 2 columns on the main page equal in size and length, and making such a featured image vertical would increase the problem once it shows on the main page. Could you tell me if the hilt on this Tanto is bare carved wood or if its wrapped? If its wrapped is this leather?

Important message for file movers edit
A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning.
