Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Suggestions for verifying copyright edit

It seems a big problem you are facing is that as per your comments, many of your images were uploaded elsewhere before they were uploaded to wikipedia. While there's nothing wrong with this, it does make it difficult to verify that you are indeed the person who owns the copyright of the images, particularly since they are quite diverse with some of the, being rather old. I'm not that experienced in wikimedia commons or copyright verification but I have some suggestions and as most of them require working with other people they should be able to advise where it will be enough.

In the case of old images, in at least one example you mentioned you had the original negatives. If these are easily accessible, as someone mentioned, a simple solution would likely be to take a photo of the original negatives, this will help confirm the claim.

In cases of more recent photos, metadata is not that useful since it's easily faked. Explaining where the photo was taken helps, but the more important thing would be to provide other content which you have not contributed elsewhere which helps confirm. For example if you have other photos clearly taken in the same place at the around the same time by the same person not contributed elsewhere. In one case you mentioned a photo was cropped from a larger photo containing your wife. Providing the original or even a modified version with your wife obscured will likely be sufficient to assuage concerns presuming the same photo hasn't been contributed elsewhere.

If you don't want to release the images under a free licence it'll probably be okay if you upload them elsewhere but do speak to people about it first. If for some reason you don't want to release the stuff publicly at all, it may be okay to email them to a trusted admin or OTRS but this will likely be more complicated since they will need to evaluate them themselves so will need to have sufficient experience to do so and it may take a while. Also in the case of OTRS I believe the content will be preserved and available to anyone with access to the que and there may be size limitations which cold cause problems.

I'm not saying you'll have to do this everytime. Note as highlighted by another editor above, in cases where your image regardless of who uploaded it, has already been deleted, there's a process you should follow and this process is not simply uploading it again. The other thing, as I said in en wikipedia ANI, you should really explain what happened in cases like Commons:Deletion requests/File:The Badge of the Ulster Defence Regiment.jpg where valid questions about the copyright status have been raised of something you claimed was your own work, you should really clarify the situation.

Thanks for you comments. I think I am going down the OTRS road. I eventually found my storage box of photographs in my garage yesterday - still unpacked after a house move. I have the original photographs in question on my desk and the negatives standing by. I also have a clear series of pics in digital format to prove ownership of those. I confirm I was the person who drew up the sign from memory. The type face may not be exactly correct but it's close enough. The image was created from scratch using Photoshop and a free image of the UDR cap badge. It's not a scan of someone else's work or from a book or the web - completely created from scratch. Would you like me to update it using my current user name? Or would you prefer I created a new sign? I'm asking because you wouldn't be drawing my attention to it unless you had an issue. It's not the whole image I'm talking about, but rather the drawing of the crown, harp, and female figure which is found in the middle of it. I suppose this is the "UDR cap badge". Could you please indicate on the file's page who the illustrator is and the licence under which they released it, and provide whatever evidence is necessary to allow others to confirm this information? As far as I remember I drew the illustration myself. That's why you can't find it on the web. This was in the days when I was still quite good at such things. Now passed sadly because of illness. Is it your objective to call this image into question, get the sign deleted then to tag File:Ulster Defence Regiment Insignia.jpg for deletion? There were two previous versions of the badge used and this is what kicked off the vendetta against me. The first was a Crown Copyright version which could only be used on one article.
