Chinese edit

Hello, VulpesVulpes42,
The files seem OK to me, as far as the character choice and the vectorial rendering are concerned. And the "ACClicense" is OK.
The only thing is that it would be better to standardize the file format to 300x300 pixels, and standardize the [width or heigth] maximum of the figure to 290 pixels (leaving 5 pixels on each side), by scaling the entire figure (make sure the with and height remain proportionnaly linked). But this is just a refinement, since with vectorial drawing the files are scalable at any dimension in the first place.
Another point : when you fill the "silk" parameter in the ACC licence, it automatically classifies the image in the "Bamboo and silk script characters" category, so there is no need to explicit the category.
Then, for retrieval purpose, the template:ACClicense has additional parameters :
  • For compound characters, the parameters "component1=" ... to "component5=" should be used to ease retrieval and comparisons.
  • For non-compound characters, the parameters "component1=" should be the character itself (since it is non-compound...) and the "strokes=" parameter should be filled (so that elementary characters may be retrieved by strokes count).
If you forget to do it it is nt a big deal : the "strokes" and "component1" parameters categorizes it in a "garbage collector" category. Just make sure that if you give a character decomposition, it is complete ; unknown components should be flagged by "?" (dont'know) or "Misc (never mind that atypical one).

Hi edit

Hello mate. I noticed today that you found the Standard Details of Road Elements documents from Singapore Land Transport Authority, and have linked them onto the road signs I have so-far updated. Would you mind pointing out just where you found them? My version is an older, more primitive black & white version I got off Scribd. If you got them right off the LTA's website, I am hoping maybe they have versions in Chinese, Malay, and Tamil as well. That way I can do the file descriptions in the 4 official languages of Singapore. Fry1989 eh? 00:46, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Fry1989: ! I did get them right of the LTA's website. When I saw the title of the source that you had provided, I thought that I would try to find it myself, so I went to their website and used their "built-in" search feature (turns out it's just plain old Google with the scope simply limited to that website), and searched for Standard Details of Road Elements.
What immediately caught my eye was a PDF document with that very title, however, when I opened it, it turned out to simply be an index of the different chapters. At this point I realized that the chapters were probably stored as separate PDF files. I tried and experimented for a while with the intent of finding the golden keywords that would consistently give me the right chapter. I believe now that the most effective keyword is the title of the chapter, like "traffic warning signs". As far as other Singaporean languages go, there is sadly little that I can do. Unless you know the title of Standard Details of Road Elements in different languages, it seems unlikely that I will be able to find non-English versions, if they even exist at all.
However, there are a few things that I hope I can assist with. Upon request, I can give you the link of any chapter, or if you prefer to try and search for them yourself, the link to the index. If it would be to any help, I could also try to search the website in hopes of finding a potential page that links directly to all chapters, bypassing the search function. Be sure to make me aware if you desire me to help you in any of the listed ways, or if I can be of any assistance in some other way. - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 09:33, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I was able to find the Standard Theory of Driving handbook in the 4 official languages, but it has a limited selection of signs. I don't really know the names of the SDRE in the other languages. I will try to play around as see if I can find them on the LTA website. The index would be appreciated, I would like to see all the chapters. Fry1989 eh? 17:50, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Very well then, here is the index: https://www.lta.gov.sg/content/dam/ltaweb/corp/Industry/files/SDRE(2014)/Content%20page.pdf When you said that you wanted to see all the chapters, did you mean that you wanted links to each individual chapter, or did you mean that you wanted a list of the chapters' titles as provided by the index? - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 20:10, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
They all appear to be there. Thank you. Just a side note, I seem to be suffering a bit of a brain drain. I have about 10 more signs for Thailand and I'll be finished, but I really just lack the drive to do them. After Thailand, I want to work on the Vienna Convention. There appears to be a lot of misconceptions about it floating around the internet. I read an article the other day saying that it only allows for the red triangles for warning signs, when it does also allow yellow diamonds. But I should finish one project before jumping onto another one. Singapore will probably be after that. Fry1989 eh? 21:02, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I believe in you @Fry1989: ! You can do this. Wikimedia and the rest of the internet need you! - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 21:08, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Your words are very encouraging and appreciated, but for some reason I just can't make myself do the last few signs in Thailand properly. It requires re-drawing the Thai script and that is very labour intensive. I'll upload upload them with the sketchy script in the PDFs, and maybe re-draw the script in the future. But the Vienna Convention is next and then Singapore. Thanks for your support, it really means a lot to me. Fry1989 eh? 20:30, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Do take your time@Fry1989: ! Wikimedia should be grateful for all the amazing volunteers who choose to spend their free time by contributing, most of whom have jobs or study. No one is paying you to do this, and you have no obligations whatsoever, yet here you are. The Wikimedia projects are like democracy or drinkable tap water: things that are easily taken for granted but kind of amazing when you start to think about it, and without people like you the Wikimedia projects would never have been where they are today. Trust me, encouragement is something that you deserve, and among the least of things that I can do. - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 21:27, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. Thanks for fixing that typo. May I ask what you think of my progress so far? Fry1989 eh? 20:16, 10 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hello again, @Fry1989: ! Usually I would not feel justified to give these kinds of remarks, since I myself am so much worse than you when it comes to SVG artistry, but you asked for it so here we go: I would say that you're doing quite well! It may sound weird, but I have kept a close eye on your progress on this website, eagerly awaiting your next move. The one piece of hopefully constructive criticism that I will mention is that the letter S in the word STOP looks a bit weird (although miles better than what I could do) up close, while the other letters look perfectly fine. This carries over to all five variants within the convention. Now, I would like to draw a parallel with movie criticism, which is that movie critics often do not make films themselves. In this situation, you make the SVG files, while I judge them, despite being worse at actually doing SVG stuff. Other than that minor flaw, your work with the Vienna Convention looks just fine so far. Sincerely - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 20:32, 10 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Sorry if I'm seeming a bit of a "like me! like me!!!" whiny person begging for approval, I was just curious how you felt about the way I am going about this one. For the other countries I just put the signs on the page, but this one I want to give a proper description of the signs and their requirements since so many people seem to get the Convention wrong, and the Wikipedia page leaves something to be desired. As for the STOP sign, I used the German font DIN 1451 Engschrift, since many other fonts like Transport don't have the right proportions to meet the 1/3 height requirement (also my version of Transport is very choppy). Yeah, I can see a few little flaws in the S, I might re-draw it. Thanks. Fry1989 eh? 20:39, 10 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh no, @Fry1989: , you do not come of as that kind of person at all! I think that you're just inherently likeable by being nice. I did like how you decided to do a more full-blown description for the Vienna Convention, I thought that that was a really nice touch.
Also, here's a fun fact! S is a letter that seems to be especially prone to getting messed up. In the official digitized version of the official Swedish road sign font Tratex, the letter S has some flaws which become apparent when you zoom in. I have in real life seen this carry over to tram "road" signs, one of which only contains the letter S prominently displayed... - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 20:50, 10 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Wait, @Fry1989: ! Don't bother retracing the letters! I found an SVG which seem to contain a cleaner version of the letters. - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 20:58, 10 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Greetings. Just thought I would drop by to say hello, see how you are doing, if you have any thoughts or suggestions or need help with anything. Also do you think the car is too small on the triangle version? I am happy with it on the diamond sign but the triangle one I am not so sure about. Fry1989 eh? 17:25, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Well hello @Fry1989: . How nice of you! I do not really have any thoughts or suggestions, at least regarding your work, other than that your page about the Vienna convention is coming along very nicely indeed. The sign images that you have produced seem to hold a high standard. (note from the future: you added that question about the size of the car before i submitted this message. I'll have to take a look at that later.)
Instead, I thought that I would tell you what I've been up to lately. One thing that I like to do on the Wikimedia projects is to find something large that I can work with systematically. Believe it or not, but I actually used to do a fair bit of editing on Wiktionary, things relating to Chinese characters. Anyway, this time I decided to tackle the file descriptions of Swedish road signs. Currently, they range from half-arsed (excuse my cursing, I don't usually do that) to just plain useless. In some places, half of the description that is supposed to be in English is in Swedish, while in other, the entire description is just "Swedish road sign".
So my plan is to really fix those descriptions, eh (is that cultural appropriation? I hope not.). For some reason, I started with A21, but I plan to the rest of them in order, currently working with A1(-1). Your assistance to me may not be due to you being a vector artist, but someone who's a native speaker of English, and one who knows a whole lot of road terminology at that. You can start by taking a look at the two signs that I mentioned, and tell me (or fix it yourself) if you see something out of place. I may also ask you about individual words in the future, if that's not too much to ask.
Also, I want to inquire your opinion about one thing. Currently, I plan to include information about the size of signs, being inspired by the file descriptions of German road signs. Is that overkill? - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 17:58, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry about that, it should have been part of my original comment my question came as an afterthought and then I just added it in haphazardly. As for the Swedish signs, I like that you are working on the descriptions. Ideally, I think all our signs should have the description in both English and the national language of whichever country they are from. I started doing that with the signs from Thailand, and I am trying my best with doing the descriptions of the Vienna Convention signs in the 6 working languages of the United Nations. As for dimensions, I don't think it is absolutely necessary but it doesn't hurt either. If you want to put them in, it only can add to the information we have about these signs. :) Fry1989 eh? 18:06, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh one other thing. I found this site last night. It may help with the translations for Sweden, as it is available in both English and Swedish. Fry1989 eh? 18:22, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Fry1989: Well, the site won't load on my Wii U, but I'll definitively take a look at it later on either computer or mobile. As for the size of the car, I finally have formed my opinion. At first, I didn't give the proportions a second thought, which might be a sign that nothing is urgently wrong. I happened to notice that the proportions are similar to that of the equivalent Spanish road sign. I can only imagine it being tricky with making sure that the proportions look good on both diamond-shaped and triangular signs, but so far I would say that you have overcome that obstacle competently. Right, my own opinion: if I'd fine-tune it, I'd alter the proportions so that the car became proportionally bigger, compensating by making the gravel smaller and/or the visible trajectory of the gravel shorter. But like I said, nothing urgent. - VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 20:19, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
That's how I am feeling too. Most of the other signs in the category, the car is larger. I will play around with it some. I do try and keep the symbols the same size on both the triangle and diamond warning signs, but I guess it isn't always possible. Fry1989 eh? 23:10, 21 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi again edit

I just wanted to let you know that I have lost my attention span for the Vienna Convention. It is nearly finished, but I need to do something different. I have shifted over to Singapore for now. But I will go back to the Vienna Convention and properly finish it some day. Fry1989 eh? 19:42, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Understandable. I have done similar things loads of times. Honestly, I was anxiously awaiting Singapore. BTW, I left something on your talk page. — VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 19:44, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
Btw, I have a bit of an odd question that I hope you do not mind me asking, but what is your nationality? You said you were very anxious for me to do Singapore, so I thought maybe you are Singaporean, but you also have been working hard on Sweden so I thought maybe you are Swedish. I am just curious. :) Fry1989 eh? 20:19, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Fry1989: I am indeed Swedish :) I just think that Singapore's road signs look unique, from what I have seen in those PDFs. — VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 21:23, 1 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Traditional v. Simplified Chinese charaters edit

There's a bit of an odd thing going on. When viewing them on my computer, some indeed look identical, as they obviously do for you as well. But when I view them on my mobile phone browser, they differ (compare the 2nd character). Also strangely, the reverse is going on. On my computer the 3rd character is different, but on my mobile phone they are identical. So for many of the files, both the Traditional and Simplified versions should be maintained. I am going through the process of comparing the characters on both displays. Fry1989 eh? 22:18, 19 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Fry1989: I will not revert your changes, but look up Han Unification on Wikipedia. For the most part simplified characters are separate Unicode characters from traditional characters. But a few are unified, leaving it up to the font to choose between the simplified and traditional form. And then there's OpenType, and things get complicated. I would say that you keep your reverts. VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 05:05, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
I use Google Translate to translate the Simplified characters used in Singapore into Traditional characters. Perhaps I should use Wictionary instead? Fry1989 eh? 16:54, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Fry1989: I would definitively recommend Wiktionary. It is very intuitive once you get used to it. BTW, since a while back the simplified characters used in Singapore are identical to those used in the PRC.—VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 18:44, 20 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Flag of Bau edit

Hello, sorry for the hassle, but I was wondering if you could help me with something. I remember that you created the 1871 civil flag of Fiji at my request in the Graphics Lab a few months ago (thanks for that, by the way), so I was wondering, would it fall into your scope to be able to tend to another request I may have, in relation to another historical Fijian flag (namely the flag of the Kingdom of Bau)? I'd put this in the Graphics Lab, but I already have a few requests over there, and I'd prefer not to congest it too much. Sorry again. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 02:20, 25 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Snow Lion Fenian: I can always try. What is it exactly that you want me to do with that file? VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 07:41, 25 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@VulpesVulpes42: Thanks for replying. Well, if possible, I was looking to bring this flag more in line with the actual version of the flag of the Kingdom of Bau, which is described in the following article as being a tricolour of "white, blue, and red, placed horizontally, with the sun rising out of the blue ground, and a crown in the top corner". Hence the sunburst should be within the blue stripe, and the crown on the left end of the white stripe, at least that's how I interpret it (You see, I requested the creation of this very flag at the Graphics Lab a few months ago, though the artist seemed to misinterpret my instructions, which is why said flag turned out the way it did, and it had already been removed from the page before I could request changes). Oh, and based on another source I once came across, the sunburst should have 30 rays. So what do you think? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:13, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Snow Lion Fenian: I'll give it a shot. The 30 rays thing might be a bit beyond my current skill level, we'll have to see. VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 17:26, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Snow Lion Fenian: There you go! From a technical perspective, this can be polished (I used Inkscape, and probably left a bit of a mess behind the scenes), but from an aesthetic perspective, I hope that this is satisfactory (and that I myself did not misunderstand anything). VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 16:13, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@VulpesVulpes42: That's terrific work, and thanks for taking the time to do that, I really do appreciate it. Now, I know you've already done a lot, but while I'm here, is there any chance you could update this version of the flag (I'm not sure, but I think this could actually be the King of Bau's flag, which the aforementioned Fiji Sun article mentions but unfortunately doesn't describe, as I once came across another flag page that mentions that this flag looks similar to the King's personal seal at the time) as well? Specifically by having the sunburst match the 30-ray version from the other flag (while also keeping it the same size as the one on this one), and also moving the crown closer into the corner, and perhaps reducing it in size by a small amount (but not as small as the crown on the other one), in order to make it look more "balanced" in proportion to the size of the sunburst (if that even makes sense, sorry for not explaining it better). But I understand if you can't. Thanks again anyway. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 15:37, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Snow Lion Fenian: I am so, so sorry for never getting back to you! I have no idea what made me not respond, but regardless, I think that it was pretty inexcusable of me. According to your request, I have now updated the second file as well. While the vector graphics that I make from scratch usually are valid, I noticed that the preexisting crown seems to have some validity issues. I should probably get that looked up by some user with more technical knowledge. Anyhow, please let me know if the updated file lives up to your expectations. In the future, I promise that I will give a clear answer as to whether or not I accept any particular request. —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 16:48, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

FoP: Sweden should not be yellow at File:Freedom_of_Panorama_world_map.svg edit

Per Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Sweden#Freedom_of_panorama, the Swedish court ruled, that Article 24 in their copyright law does not apply to online publication, and this applies to all works of art, including architecture. -Mardus /talk 09:21, 31 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Mardus: Thanks—I reverted my change. VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 14:33, 31 January 2020 (UTC)Reply
This claim is totally wrong! Buildings can be depicted and published without any constraints. The Swedish copyright law is very clear at that point and that has never been subject to challenge in court. When it comes to artwork, the verdict of the district court was that photos of artwork may not be published as a part of a systematic catalogue the way it was done att the site offentligkonst.se. Publication on other sites or in other manners was not subject of this trail. /ℇsquilo 08:43, 9 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Esquilo: I apologize, but I'm realizing now that I am quite ignorant on this whole subject. Sorry if this causes any inconvenience, but I must request that you consult more knowledgeable users instead of me—I shall try to stay out of this whole thing. VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 14:59, 9 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
@VulpesVulpes42: No idea what should I say, in this case I would rather support what Mardus said, the supreme court already clearly-than-god defined that the entire article 24 is not valid for the Internet-based reproductions, all of what that article allowed are only for the real world, and doesn't indeed allowed commercial usages (a simple case that COM:L disallow). --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:02, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Dear @Liuxinyu970226: , thank you for coming with your insights. However, I want to make it clear that I ventured into an area that I did not understand well enough to be properly venturing into, and have thus decided to not involve myself further with that subject. Accordingly, I must ask you to not expect my involvement, and request that the topic in question will not be discussed further on my talk page. I would do much better to let others sort out this issue themselves, and let them adjust the file once a consensus is reached. —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 18:01, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Förra årets vinnarbild i Wiki Loves Earth!

Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2020 in Sweden or other participating countries.)

/Eric Luth (WMSE) (talk) 07:52, 29 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Byggðamerki Norðurþings.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

@JuTa: Hello. Thank you for notifying me about this. I apologize for this error. Reasonably, this file should be licensed the same way as the other files depicting Icelandic municipal insignia which have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, or, in other words, be in the public domain. I would hate to be an inconvenience, and you are of course welcome to correct the licence information, based on the information provided in this reply.

Hur stora vill du ha stjärnorna i px alternativt i procent?
Mvh – GeMet [talk] 03:12, 15 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Jamaica edit

I think the problem we are running into is that there are multiple color specs for Jamaica's flag. The colors I reported in December 2012 still exists at https://opm.gov.jm/1-devon-rd/national-symbols-emblems/ and https://mfaft.gov.jm/jm/frequently-asked-questions/. I really do not have a clue in what context https://jis.gov.jm/media/2013/08/COLOUR-1.jpg came from or anything. I'm more curious than anything else. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:23, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dear @Zscout370: I should admit that I may have acted a bit too hastily. Honestly, I am not aware of the context behind the conflicting color codes, I just saw that they came from a government source, and made a premature decision. From now on, I think it would be wiser of me to leave this issue to others. By the way, I apologize for bringing up an old topic, but it seems that so far no administrator has updated the flag of Afghanistan, using the official rendition of the emblem that I made transparent. Do you think that an administrator will notice the request sooner or later, or do you think that I more actively should seek one out? Sincerely —VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 11:43, 3 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

About the location maps for Finland edit

Hey, just thought to let you know that there's an upcoming regional reform going on in Finland and the regional borders will be changed at the beginning of January. This means all the regional and municipal locator maps have to be updated and I thought you should probably save your effort with the old maps for now. I'm planning on uploading the 2021 administrative base map soon. I've been thinking that the next patch of locator maps shouldn't be named by year so that whenever they need to be updated we can just change the same map so that the files in the Wikipedia pages don't need to be updated every time. --Fenn-O-maniC (talk) 12:29, 18 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Fenn-O-maniC: Hello! I appreciate that you contacted me, but believe it or not, I thought that this was worth doing despite already knowing about the upcoming reform. Not including the year in the new file names is probably advantageous for the reasons you mentioned, but at the same time, I also think it's nice to have older maps, as they document the changes over time. Anyway, I want to thank you for all your contributions this year. The great efforts of voluntary Wikimedians such as yourself must never be taken for granted. With all of this said – Hyvää joulua ja onnellista uutta vuotta! ^^ VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 13:45, 18 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think previous year maps can be uploaded separately whenever they're needed. Happy holidays to you too! --Fenn-O-maniC (talk) 07:48, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Amund Dietzel edit

I want to ask why you have reverted the de-blurred image twice on File:Tattoist Amund Dietzel 1914.jpg. After the first revert I started a talk page discussion on the file's talk page and you did not go there, instead you reverted to your preferred version of the file a second time. Your opinion is the opinion of just one editor, as is mine. I am not going to be involved in an edit war over the image, but perhaps a discussion about this should take place. I came to your talk page, because you did not go to the file talk page. Bruxton (talk) 15:56, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Edit, I see you went to several other files that I uploaded and also performed reverts. A discussion is definitely needed before these unilateral actions. Bruxton (talk) 16:04, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Dear @Bruxton: Thank you for reaching out to me on my talk page. I genuinely appreciate your willingness to discuss this matter, as well as the fact that you do not want to start an edit war. Rest assured, it was never my intention to engage in edit warring either, and I do apologize if my conduct led you to believe otherwise.

First off, I did indeed miss the message which you had written on the file's talk page. Even if it may not be the most exemplary behavior, I tend to mostly present arguments in favor of changes or reverts in the file change summary, only writing on the talk page if I need to make a greater point, featuring lengthier or more nuanced arguments. Inversely, I tend to mostly check the talk pages of files only after being directed thereto by someone writing in the file change summary; sorry about that.

With all of this said, I will now present some more in-depth arguments against the use of AI to artificially add detail to photos; both general ones, as well as ones relating to each concerned image individually. Beginning with my general issues with this technology, I actually have some ethical concerns. This is definitively not to say that I think that your actions are personally unethical – on the contrary, I think that your contributions here prove that you have the site's best interests in mind and are genuinely working to improve it. With that in mind, I believe that there are some problematic aspects about adding detail using artificial intelligence:

  • The most important ethical issue as I see it is that even if the final results may look good, the AI still has to make guesses about how the missing detail is supposed to look. Although it could succeed by chance, the most likely outcome is that it will differ in some way, major or minor, from reality. Files on Commons are supposed to be educational, and it is my personal conviction that historical photos should not be altered in potentially inaccurate ways for the sake of aesthetic preferences. As the AI is only able to guess, it will inevitably end up misrepresenting the historical reality.
  • Even if that weren't the case, the technology is still imperfect, oftentimes leading to results which are worse-looking compared to the unsharpened files. I will present my arguments for why this is the case for each of the five images that I reverted:
  1. File:Tattoist Amund Dietzel 1914.jpg: This is probably the least bad example out of all five. With that said, while the face was sharpened, the rest of the body and background were noticeably smeared, giving the image as a whole a highly uneven appearance.
  2. File:Amund Dietzel 1914.jpg: Same as above, but with additional problems. His hand which rests on the table looks weird and alienlike in the sharpened version, while his glasses just sort of disappear halfway through.
  3. File:Marie Herndl.jpg: The altered version looks extremely weird. Everything from how her hair just looks like an amorphous texture which defies what could exist in reality, to her eyes, to the way everything below her chin looks flat and hazy compared to the rest. She also appears to have gotten a bit of a beard.
  4. File:William Williams 1906.jpg: Again, everything below the face looks impossibly hazy and dreamlike, while the AI randomly decided to add a beard, but only to the right half of his face.
  5. File:October 1963 Jay Swayze with shovel.jpg: And finally, we have another image where the faces were hyper-sharpened while everything else was smeared. Everything about the final result looks unrealistic. The leftmost gentleman seems to be lacking an eye and a mouth, while the middle one has had one disproportionately tiny eye added to his face. The whole scene receives an alienlike effect which I certainly believe is unintentional.

My sincere apologies for my prolixity. I do however hope that I have somewhat decently argued in favor of my actions, and adequately addressed your concerns. Sincerely, VulpesVulpes42 (talk) 21:29, 23 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the rationale. I think you are correct. I will leave the original historic files and if I use any program to enhance. I will upload a new separate file as an extracted image. Thanks for the thoughtful message! Bruxton (talk) 02:53, 24 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Äntligen maj: Wiki Loves Earth 2023! edit

Förra årets vinnarbild i Wiki Loves Earth!

Hej,
(For information in English, see Wiki Loves Earth 2023 in Sweden or other participating countries.)

/Axel Pettersson (WMSE) (talk) 12:46, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrol given edit

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. GPSLeo (talk) 16:20, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading File:Kraschan, 1 kl. av S-ta Annaorden, Ryssland, J.Keibel, S-t Petersburg - Livrustkammaren - 78511.tif. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag.
