Image:Burkinafaso coa.png edit

Burkina Faso became independent in 1960 so why do you claim that its coat of arms is public domain? Thuresson 22:06, 3 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

I assumed that being released as a national emblem, the coat of arms of Burkina Faso would have been released also into public domain. There are some country-specific restrictions about the usage of national coats of arms that are not related to the age of the emblem and that I am not aware of as the information is almost impossible to find. If there is information available about the possible restrictions or if there is another template more suitable for this specific emblem, please tell me. – Vzb83 18:28, 4 May 2005 (UTC)Reply

Image:Flag of North Korea.svg edit

[1] is known to have been wrong, and the colours I use are based on [2], which is why I reverted your change of the colours of the flag of North Korea. —Gabbe 20:42, 4 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The flag at your source has different colours than in the current version of the flag at Commons. The RGB values for the flag at the site are 3, 77, 162 for blue and 236, 29, 37 for red while the current version has 4, 0, 167 for blue and 216, 0, 0 for red. I hope you didn't base your colours on the banner at the website, which is just web design. Besides, the site doesn't even tell which colours to use, while Vexilla-mundi does. Since your source seems to be official, I'll change the colours to match the flag presented at the site. –Vzb83 16:31, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

SVG flags edit

I don't have any real experience with Adobe Illustrator, since I edit most of my SVG's using only Notepad for Windows. I can say that for most images simply changing colours is often only a task of opening the .svg-file in any given text editor and then change it. Part of the reason why I've rewritten some SVG flags is to simplify this process. As for keeping file sizes down using Illustrator I would suggest asking Commons_talk:WikiProject Flags. —Gabbe 00:15, 7 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reliability of vexilla-mundi.com edit

Another thing, vexilla-mundi.com is not a very reliable source of the colours of flags. Their page on Taiwan is for instance completely wrong, so I would strongly recommend against changing the colours on flags simply because vexilla-mundi disagrees with the current file on Commons. There is also the more referenced Flags of the World, for instance, and these two sites rarely agree as for what colours to use. —Gabbe 00:46, 7 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Before I can make such judgements about Vexilla-mundi.com, you should give sources showing that the site really is wrong about the flag of Taiwan, for example. Often there is no specific tone given officially to a colour, which allows some improvisation to be done. Personally I find the colours used at Vexilla-mundi.com appealing, which naturally isn't a reason in itself to change the colours, but in such case when the tone isn't officially specified or if it's the only place to find the specified tones to use, I can't see why they shouldn't be used. The site specifies every tone used in the flags, while FOTW often doesn't. The colours used in FOTW's flags are often too saturated and they don't seem like carefully chosen (the same tones are used in most of the flags with no specification for tones). As long as there is no other source for specific tones than Vexilla-mundi, I'd go with its recommendations. –Vzb83 09:58, 7 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
vexilla-mundi.com is more concerned with offering a pretty package of flags than it is with accuracy. It often contradicts flag laws defined by a flag's country just so it looks prettier. :p Btw, since you seem to be interested in flag stuff, do check out WikiProject Flags. :) ¦ Reisio 16:44, 29 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

On the oficial website of the Presidency of Chile, determines the colours of the chilean flag, they are "turquesse blue", "white" and "red" (es:Bandera de Chile), simply red, not a browned red.

licensing edit

Just a heads up - any flag, coat of arms, etc. files you upload that aren't licensed as public domain ({{Pd}}, {{Pd-user}}, etc.), will inevitably be replaced. ¦ Reisio 23:13, 29 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

PD and PD-self edit

rv to PD...changing the colors doesn't really make it all yours (or anyone else's)

My purpose was only to replace the old copyright tag with a proper one since it was asked in the old PD tag. Since user Zscout370 removed the OpenClipart tag and released his redrawn image as PD I assumed I could change the tag afterwards. I didn't mean to make it my own work; that's why I didn't use PD-user tag. If it's not allowed for other people to change the tags than the original creator, I'll stop changing them. –Vzb83 16:55, 5 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I didn't mean to imply that alone, either, sorry. This is one of the reasons I opposed the ridiculous move to deprecate {{PD}} - some things are just "Public Domain". ¦ Reisio 17:01, 5 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Since it has been decided not to use PD tag anymore, we should probably follow that decision. Am I allowed to change the tags myself if another user has released the work into public domain, or should I leave it for the creator to change? I wouldn't bother changing them actively, only when updating something else. –Vzb83 17:15, 5 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Flags with Pantone colors on the Web edit

Thank you for uploading various flag SVG images with Pantone colors. But I want to notice you, although Pantones color is very useful for cloth printing, you can use them to control which color do you want on actual flags, they are not suitable for showing on the Web directly.

Monitors are not cloth, for example: If I used the same Pantone colors to print a Taiwanese flag and showed an image of Taiwanese flag on my screen, you would not think they are the same color, because the Pantone color for blue used on Taiwanese flag looks very dark when it prints on the cloth, but when you see the same Pantone color of blue on CRT monitors, it looks lighter, not very dark, and if you used a LCD monitor, you would think, this is incorrect! It is not blue, but it looks like an mix of blue and green. And also, color differences always exist in out lives, especially when LCD monitors come to the market, one images may be showed in several different similar colors on different monitors, the most extreme examples is, some blue colors may shows as light blue or a mix of blue and white on LCD monitors.

So the best way is try to use the "safest" colors that can be shown correctly on most monitors, not the "most correct" colors. I apologize that other users and me may replace your image to a better-looking version. Thanks. --Kibinsky 09:31, 6 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I am aware of this nature of the Pantone colours. Indeed, it's another reason not to use what you refer to as "safe" colours (#FF0000 etc. if I understand correctly), because as Pantone colours tend to look brighter on a monitor than on a real flag, it's even more farther away from the truth to use FF0000 instead on Pantone 186 C, for instance, because FF0000 will look even more brighter on a monitor than what it's supposed to look! Besides, these images are mostly used by different language editions of Wikipedia, which is an encyclopedia, and we cannot sacrifice accuracy just because a very small percentage of people who can only view 256 colours on their monitors would not see them correctly.
You do not have to apologize for anything, since I don't take these things personal; but if you are implying that you might change the colours of a flag with officially defined Pantone colours into whatever you feel looks better, those changes are going to be eventually reverted if they have no source or logical explanation. It's another thing with flags that have no official recommendation for the exact tones—in those cases discussion and consensus is the best way to deal with them. I hope you understand that when choosing tones for a flag it must be derived from somewhere, preferably from a reliable source; we can't just make them up by ourselves because there are millions of possible tones to choose from and it would only result in endless battle between people and their personal 'favourite' colours. –Vzb83 14:59, 6 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hi I've noticed your edit at Image:Flag of Tuvalu.svg. While your edit was not wrong, might I point you to www.flags.net, which at first glance does not look special but is in fact run by Graham Bartram, an official artist for the UK Ministry of Defence. For UK and UK-derived flags I consider him to be an authoritative source (up to a point). I'll also try to find a copy of Pantone Colorist at my university to settle once and for all which RGB to use (not withstanding screen colour calibration with sRGB/Adobe etc). Greentubing (en:WP talk) 12:02, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
Whoopsie. I didn't see your comment at Flag of Fiji.svg. Disregard the struck portions. It seems you know where I got Pantone 549C from. Greentubing (en:WP talk) 23:05, 11 February 2006 (UTC)
According to FOTW, the British Navy's Flags of All Nations recommends PMS 549C to be used as azure (sky) blue. Since Fiji is a former member of the Commonwealth, I considered using that source reliable. I agree it would be very useful to get the RGB values straight from Pantone, but since I haven't been able to access the information I've considered Photoshop the second best source. Once the information is obtained, we could make a chapter about the colours at the Flag Project page. –Vzb83 09:36, 12 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have no idea. When clicking the link to the file you can see that the image is there and it can be viewed correctly, but for some reason it doesn't show on the image page or anywhere else. Image:Flag of Bangladesh.svg edit

I see that you've changed the nuances of the colours of the Bangladeshi flag. When I at first tried to change the images used on the English Wikipedia to use the SVG one with the colours #e5053a for red and #006854 for green, I fell into the following conversation with an Asian guy. Gathering his vociferous opposition to the darker shade, I assumed him to know more about the subject than I do.

I found that you've replaced the png version with the svg one. but the new version is flawed in the green hue used. What do you suggest should be done. a) revert to the previous correct version or b) retain the faulty one given that the svg version is being preferred. tx Idleguy 09:08, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

The only correct thing to do is to change the SVG image. This is not at all a difficult thing to do. Show me a source saying what the correct color hue is, preferrably in hex/RGB coordinates, and I'll fix the SVG for you. —Gabbe 09:10, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
On this construction sheet are listed the colours CMYK 100-0-70-40 for green and CMYK 0-100-80-5 for red. What do you think about those nuances? Are those more appropriate? —Gabbe 09:42, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the website you referred to seems to have the correct shade of green. Please go ahead with the changes. tx Idleguy 09:46, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Done. —Gabbe 09:55, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Note also that looking at the CMYK values at http://www.flag.de/FOTW/flags/bd'.html#cols and converting them to RGB using for example http://www.forret.com/tools/color.asp yields #00992e (green) and #f20030 (red), and not #006a4e for green and #f42a41 for red. The image displayed on FOTW does not match the CMYK coordinates they've given. As for the pic you've provided, well, there is no way of telling if that pic itself is too dark or not. And alot of embassy homepages, like [3] and [4] for example, use a lighter shade of green. After I changed the SVG to use the lighter shades, I've received no complaints. —Gabbe 11:35, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've used Pantone 342C for green and Pantone 032C for red which were found from FOTW and converted them into RGB values in Photoshop. The reason why I think Pantone to RGB conversion is better to use in web design than CMYK colours is that CMYK shades are meant for printing and look brighter than they are supposed to when viewed on a monitor. The RGB conversions, which are originated from Pantone, are meant to be viewed through a monitor and therefore give better estimate about how the specific colour on fabric should look like on a monitor. I also found some photographs of the flag showing that the darker tones are at least to some extent being really used: [5], [6] (see the slideshow for Country and Politics). –Vzb83 16:43, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re Pantone edit

Regarding Pantone approximations might I point you to Commons talk:Pantone color chart if you haven't read it already where we talk about Photoshop v. Corel Pantone approximations. IMHO Corel's ones perform better since they:

  • are less washed out then PS
  • they seem to be designed for the web

I admit the discussion there is a bit short. The article page it is bound to has more technical information. If you are wondering about the deletion request on that page, it seems to be turning to favour retention. This is without prejudice to your work, which I think is excellent, or to your opinions on your issue (not here to "convert" you). Greentubing (en:WP talk) 07:47, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

I have no personal opinion about which source is the best for Pantone conversions. The differences between them seem barely noticeable when not viewed next to each other. I use Photoshop only because it's the most trustworthy source I have access to. It's possible to choose between sRGB or Adobe as the colour space and I have been using sRGB for the conversions (it gives slightly different results when switching to Adobe). If you achieve consensus about which approximations to use in commons, or find a definitive source, I'll gladly accept it. My only worry is trying to find official Pantone specifications and see that they are used. –Vzb83 13:43, 17 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Image:Flag of Venezuela.svg edit

You should give some very reliable source that states the national flag of Venezuela doesn't have coats of arms in it, because FOTW and website of the government of Venezuela are using the version with coats of arms as the national flag. Also, the previous version has deformed stars not positioned corretly (all the stars are made to have same height and width which is not correct). All the Venezuelan flags I've seen have smaller stars and the government site is using the version with all the stars facing upwards. I don't oppose making the stars face out of the arc, though, as long as it's done accurately. The version I uploaded has the shape of stars correct to 42 decimals and the position calculated to 9–10 decimals. –Vzb83 10:32, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

It does have a CoA, to my knowledge - which is what Image:Flag of Venezuela 1930-2006.svg is for. You'll have to read Image talk:Flag of Venezuela.svg to piece together the current mess involved. As for the stars, normally I'd agree with you, but Zscout370 is apparently part of some special flag group that knows all about it (see: Image talk:Flag of Venezuela 1930-2006.svg). ¦ Reisio 17:44, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I had read the conversation page. If I understood correctly, there is probably a new design about to come for the flag, but it doesn't seem to be in use yet. There was no mention about why there shouldn't be coats of arms in the national flag, either. I don't think it's a good idea to use wrong flag as the national flag just because we're waiting for a new one when we don't even know the exact time when we'll have it. Also, I think reverting to a version with flawed stars is not a good idea either. It's a principal in Wikipedia (and probably here also) that every edit must be verifiable, so unless Zscout370 provides sources for his/her view, we should go with the version with some sources behind it. I'm not saying my version is the most ideal one, but I think it's the one with most arguments for so far. –Vzb83 18:28, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

"I don't think it's a good idea to use wrong flag as the national flag just because we're waiting for a new one when we don't even know the exact time when we'll have it."
I don't either, but it's been like that for a while and people have altered their articles to fix the descriptions - to change it again now isn't going to help matters, especially when it should really be (and already is) at Image:Flag of Venezuela 1930-2006.svg.
"I think reverting to a version with flawed stars is not a good idea either."
According to him, it's as correct as it gets.
"It's a principal in Wikipedia (and probably here also) that every edit must be verifiable, so unless Zscout370 provides sources for his/her view, we should go with the version with some sources behind it."
Consensus reigns supreme as I see it, but I'm confident he can cite some sources for you anyways, if you ask him. ¦ Reisio 08:22, 20 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Consensus does not stand above verifiability: The three policies [verifiability, no original research, neutral point of view] are complementary, non-negotiable, and cannot be superseded by any other guidelines or by editors' consensus, as said at the page I linked to. I do not know the nature of the special flag group you mentioned, but it might be original research as far as we know. So I'll ask for sources since otherwise I cannot be satisfied with the current flag.
With "flawed stars" I was referring to the inaccurate position and shape of the stars, not their size or how they are facing. If you look at them carefully, you'll see that all the stars can be put inside squares with equal width and height. However, the width of a regular star is about 5 % larger than the height. Before you say "fix it then", I cannot do it accurately without a construction sheet since also the positions of the stars are inaccurately aligned with each other and the flag itself. Therefore I drew a new flag based on the only construction sheet I could find. I completely missed your point about why the flag should remain like that—as for now, the national flag has the coat of arms in it and to keep a version without it as the national flag is illogical. ...but it's been like that for a while—well let me correct it then! –Vzb83 14:21, 20 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

--Apalsola tc 14:30, 6 April 2008 (UTC) -- (subst) Apalsola tc 14:31, 6 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for uploading Image:Chile_COA.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Flag of the Republic of China.svg edit

One thing that I do know is this; the red seems to be light, while the blue is always dark in color. I got many color specifications, and from the hints I got, nothing is coming from the ROC Government. In one of their laws, there is a list of colors used, but not in any shades. The law is at 國旗黨旗製用升降辦法. As I wrote on the English Wikipedia, all color codes for Taiwan is just approximations. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:59, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

One more thing edit

Many of the flags has been discussed before or have dictations on how to draw them. Talk about the change first before making the actual change. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 23:54, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR A SPECTACULAR PICTURE OF A VERY BEAUTIFUL CITY.

Please help replace this outdated license edit

Hello!

Thank you for donating images to the Wikimedia Commons. You have uploaded some images in the past with the license {{PD}}. While this was a license acceptable in the early days of Wikimedia, since January 2006, this license has been deprecated and since October 2008 no new uploads with this license was allowed.

The license on older images should be replaced with a better and more specific license/permissions and you can help by checking the images and adding {{PD-self}} if you are the author or one of the other templates that you can see in the template on the image page.

Thank you for your help. If you need help feel free to ask at Commons talk:Licensing or contact User:Zscout370.

The images we would like you to check are:

Thanks for uploading File:Flag of Somalia.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
