You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Geachte meneer/mevrouw,

Hierbij nodig ik u namens Wikimedia Nederland u graag uit voor de prijsuitreiking van Wiki Loves Earth op zondag 5 oktober in Naturalis. Deze wedstrijd leverde maar liefst 1.395 foto’s en geluidfragmenten op, allemaal gemaakt in de Nederlandse Nationale Parken. Verder zal Wikimedia Nederland informatie geven over het ‘Project Natuur’. De komende jaren willen we de informatie over de natuur op Wikipedia aanvullen en verbeteren.

"paper-masked" images edit

Hi! The term "paper-masked" images is a term I invented.

Some good graphics artist came through the commons and left documentation about how the original image is better than the automatic white-pointed images that are abundant here. They were right, but not everyone understood what they were talking about. The term "paper-masked" image is supposed to keep people off my back about the color corrections I make as I am pretty sure that my corrections are really accurate because I did not correct for the paper, I corrected for the painted image.

So, my images are made by masking the flower away from the paper and putting a brand new background on them. The background could be buff color also -- the white background is a personal preference of mine (it looks best on my eReader and everyone I have checked it on) -- the only "art" decision I have made with these images.

So, that is how to do it, if you need more detail, just ask. I use GIMP. The mask-making has been impossible for me to automate, so each mask has been handmade from the most suitable decomposition layer. If you need more coaching, let me know.

My uploaded images, I can upload a transparent version. You can help me help wiki species by giving me a list of the images you need first. I am a little worried about my upload script making a mess for me.... Please forgive me for this!

Hergebruik Nederlandsche Vogelen edit

Dag Wilma,

ik heb onlangs een meting gedaan van het bekijks in 2016 van de beelddonatie van de Nederlandsche Vogelen waar jij en Dick zo nauw bij betrokken waren.

Kijk hier maar eens

Ik vind het toch bijzonder fraai om te zien dat de Vogelen wereldwijd zo vaak bekeken worden!

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is weer begonnen! edit

Beste WeeJeeVee,

Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 is vorige week begonnen! Aan deze fotowedstrijd nemen dit jaar 54 landen deel, waaronder bijvoorbeeld Nederland, Groot Brittannië, Thailand, Rusland, Oekraïne, maar ook de eilanden Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, Sint Eustatius en Sint Maarten in de Nederlandse Caribean. Je wordt dus van harte uitgenodigd om te kijken tussen de deelnemende landen of jouw vakantieland er ook bij zit dit jaar en je foto's uit die landen ook te delen!

Net als voorgaande jaren hebben we prijzen voor de mooiste foto en de meeste foto's en een keus gemaakt voor een speciale categorie. Heb jij een foto gemaakt van een monument waarvan voor 1 september 2017 nog geen afbeelding op Wikimedia Commons bestond? Dan doet de afbeelding mee in de speciale categorie! Heeft een monument nog geen foto in de monumentenlijst op Wikipedia, dan is het aannemelijk dat we er nog geen foto van hadden. Om het zoeken naar monumenten zonder afbeelding wat makkelijker te maken, kun je op Wikipedia lijsten en een kaart van Nederland vinden.

Tot slot nodigen we je nog van harte uit om volgende week met ons op pad te gaan. Op zaterdag 16 september wandelen we tijdens een Wiki Takes rond in Hoorn: op zondag 17 september doen we hetzelfde in Leiden. Onder ervaren gidsen wandelen we langs monumenten in de stad en nemen we ruimschoots de tijd om de monumenten goed op de foto te zetten. Aanmelden verplicht en plaatsen gelimiteerd!
Tot en met 30 september heb je de tijd om je foto's up te loaden: de top 10 gaat door naar de internationale wedstrijd, waar de hoofdprijs de nieuwste Canon EOS 5D camera is!

Important message for file movers edit

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
To perform file name swaps.
When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning.
