Azerbaijani landscape

Hello Ximonic, thank you for your willingness to help me to get featured states on Azerbaijani landscape photo. You seem to have much experience. By the way very impressive selection of landscapes, they are truly remarkable. I uploaded the raw version of the picture here. Thanks for your positive feedback! So... I tried some ”tricks” even though I'm not a magician. I can't do miracles due to the conditions (The most compromises I had to make because of the kind of noise all over the photograph) – but I tried to give it my best and a chance because the landscape itself is really nice, and there are no many Azerbaijani featured pictures here (is there any?). The edited version is here. It would be interesting to see what happens if that was nominated... Mysterious graveyard

Hi Ximonic, I have started to look for new potential candidates to nominate for featured status. I hope I do not bother you, but I would very much appreciate your advise on this matter. The pictures below is a 15th century graveyard of the Shirvan Dynasty in Azerbaijan. I thought these pictures are very interesting because the gravestones show character. They are half-destroyed, some have grown directly from under the ground and the atmosphere shows a little mysterious. Which of these two do you think has the best chances? [2] or [3]. • Hi! The place looks quite interesting with those differently proning gravestones, perhaps even a little spooky. They both have a little bit different looking content, yet the same mood. At first look I thought the composition of the first picture looks nicer, a bit simpler. But after a while I started to like more the content of the second image with its many gravestones pointing different directions. I think the images could need a little more dynamics or some very subtle contrast increase. Then there would be a better feeling of many shapes in the foreground and they wouldn't look as “flat”. Despite this I think they both show a different perspective. One show the spooky atmosphere and the other shows a brighter side with city in the background and clouds.  Done Some enhancements done to the pictures in question. Not sure if people would want them featured. Hope the result is pleasant enough. New edits have been uploaded as you adviced. Some problems have occured in Commons, concerning how the new versions are being shown. I believe it's just some temporary issue (which i've been cursing for atleast two days). So maybe the best thing to do is to just wait a couple of days and see if the problem goes away. If not, maybe the pictures should be uploaded under different names. Alright I understand what you mean. Right now Im trying to figure out which picture to nominate for featured states next. These are the candidates: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H. Which of these stands the best chance? Azeri (talk) 19:48, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

It's difficult for me to tell directly which one should you nominate – but I can give you my thoughts about each picture and why would I personally either oppose or support some. There might be people who disagree with me. But maybe you can get some clue and consider the nomination more easily.

• A:  Oppose The composition would prevent me to support (the branch on top, cutted out bottom & brighter rock surface on the left)
• B:  Oppose The greatest problem might be the overblown sky. It is completely white and has usually prevented a picture to become featured.
• C:  Support Very interesting portrait. The focus is a bit on the soft side (I think) and possibly some people might not like the centered position. Yet for me this could be a FP.
• D:  Weak oppose These kind of subjects have been quite difficult to get featured usually. I'm not sure if the composition is a little too tight (this would be hard to crop because there seems to be stuff on the sides of the subject. I'm not sure about the lighting conditions.
• E:  Weak oppose I like the contrast of the subject more in this one than the previous. Still the dark top is a little distracting.
• F:  Support This is interesting and the composition works for me. The only concern for me are the power lines on the right. They could be cloned out, but the picture would not be real anymore. I'm not sure if voters find it special enough, dunno. But anyhow, I'd support this.
• G:  Support I'd give my support for this too. The composition works and the picture is interesting.
• H:  Oppose Beautiful pattern but pictures like this should have no distortion and should have a corrected perspective. So the pattern should be all straight. Therefore I can't support this. Another issue is the cropped out top.

Re: Glacier Argentière

Hi Ximonic,

you're right about my picture of the glacier, the white balance is off, and it's certainly too yellowish. As you said, this is a matter of taste, and I did this on purpose. But now that I look at it back, I think it's really too yellowish... your work might be a but too blueish, I'm not sure. The landscape spreads wide around so a wide angle lens would be useful. The lighting kind of required the use of multiple exposures in every part. The sun stays quite low the few hours it is above the horizon here in the north. Usually on a bright cloudless day the colour of different lights range from somewhat ultramarine/violet to warm yellowish (is usually the snow on the mountains when sun shines there). However, here the clouds and mountains block much of the light and affect it, but it has still somewhat the same mood it has been there. However, the raising fog caused by the nightly frost and fresh snow make the air more grayish where the ultramarine tones of the mountains in shadow get fainter. The latest trips I have made to northern Norway I have really taken focus on the colors and what kind of tone is there coming to my eye. Afterwards I tried my best to keep the same mood and colors as I actually saw without any technical equipment modifying the impression. One might consider to disagree but I warmly recommend to visit and witness these interesting places! --Ximonic 23:31, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
