IMHO, wrongly made unnecessary cat. Look at the EN description and the subcats of "Majlis" and you immediately see that we have a confusion around Iranian parliament(s), the various institutions (and also as a building). E4024 (talk) 15:40, 9 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

I looked and I didn't immediately see the problem. Can you please explain? Thanks. - Themightyquill (talk) 20:59, 9 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Tagging @Estopedist1 and @Themightyquill since you were both involved in the previous category discussion above. The issue with this category remains because this commons category claims to be about the Iranian parliament, however, its Wikidata item claims that Majlis is an instance of a "term", not an instance of a "body of government of Iran". The Wikidata item is correct, as there are multiple Majlis in the Arabic and Persian world. This might not be obvious in the English language, but even in the non-Arabic, non-Persian language Russian the issue with the category becomes very evident, as the term (Russian: Меджлис, romanized: Mejlis) is not only referring to the Iranian parliament, but also to all of the following institutions:

Circassian Majlis

Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People

People's Majlis

Assembly of Turkmenistan

Consultative Assembly of Saudi Arabia

People's Assembly of Syria

Grand National Assembly of Turkey

It's even used for non-political societies in Azerbaijani, such as w:ru:Меджлиси-унс (Mejlisi-uns) and w:ru:Меджлиси-фарамушан (Mejlisi-faramushan).

The (Russian) Wikipedia article on Majlis that is connected with this commons category is accordingly about the "term" Majlis (Q10858057) and it's use in Arabic/Persian. The Iranian parliament has a separate article (on Ru-Wiki) and its own Wikidata entry (Q378605). Similarly, the corresponding English Wikipedia article on Majlis is Majlis (Q10858057) and the article Islamic Consultative Assembly (Q378605) is about the Iranian parliament.

So, as a Russian speaker, I'd obviously put images of the Azerbaijani Mejlis in this category, but then this category page says that it's supposed to be only about the Iranian parliament... So, where do I put the Azerbaijani Mejlis instead..? The name of this commons category does not specify that it is the "Majlis of Iran". It's just the category for Majlis (in general). Or so I would think. Nakonana (talk) 18:56, 12 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Nakonana: I'm not sure I understand. Can Category:Parliaments of Iran be a subcategory of Category:Majlis as you see it? -- Themightyquill (talk) 22:08, 24 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that would work. And all the other parliaments that are mentioned above would also be subcategories of Category:Majlis. Nakonana (talk) 22:11, 24 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Return to "Majlis" page.
