Hi @Andy Dingley: my thinking went like this:

  • all NPN transistors are bipolar transistors, so there is no point in having them under Transistors as well as Bipolar junction transistors
  • PNP transistors were only under Bipolar junction transistors and not under Transistors as well, so it should be consistent

  • NPN / PNP are widely used terms, much better known than "bipolar" (find an entry-level hobbyist book that uses it?). WP:SUBCAT is frequently damaging if over-applied, and this is one of those cases - we need to provide clear navigational structures for all readers, and removing such obvious navigational routes as TransistorsNPN makes that navigation less useful.
